Re: [Frameworks] Books on Handmade Films

2020-01-18 Thread Josh Drake
I’m a little late on this topic but wanted to add to the list Joel
Schlemowitz’s “Experimental Filmmaking and the Camera” that came out in
2019.

Definitely does not cover camera-less filmmaking but is a great resource
for understanding the full possibilities of the camera from an experimental
perspective - with great reference examples. Certainly Bolex-focused, but
most of the material has implications for any camera.

I wish I would have had this book 20 years ago.

Wow!!!

Thanks so much for tons of wonderful references, everyone!

Kornelia, I will write to you separately. I'm curious about the book you
mentioned.

Re: [Frameworks] Books on Handmade Films

2020-01-16 Thread Becka Barker
Three books I think are worth checking out:

Helen Hill’s* Recipes for Disaster* is a sort of big zine that’s separated
into two parts—direct cameraless tips and techniques, and hand-processing
recipes. Might be hard to find a hard copy but I think there are PDF
versions floating around on the interwebs.

Steve Woloshen has two books: *Recipes for Reconstruction* and *Scratch,
Crackle & Pop. *These are also pretty accessible and I think you can buy
copies online*.*

Do you have a sense of what kinds of equipment and facilities you’ll have
access to when you do the workshop? Good luck with it!

Gregory Zinman has recently published a monograph, Making Images Move:

you may use some of these sources – most of them mention handmade film

Process Cinema: Handmade Film in the Digital Age edited by Scott
MacKenzie and Janine Marchessault (MQUP, 2019)

Very Naughty Boys: The Amazing True Story of Handmade Films by Robert

Dear Tetsuya,

I recommend Helen Hill's 'Recipes for Disaster: A Handcrafted Film
Cookbooklet'. Here is a pdf copy:
http://www.filmlabs.org/docs/recipes_for_disaster_hill.pdf. You can watch
some of her films on Vimeo at: https://vimeo.com/helenhill. 'Madame Winger
Makes a Film' (https://vimeo.com/197137362) is wonderful.

Dear all.

I am planning a workshop on super 8 direct filmmaking in Port-au-Prince, Haiti,
and need some reference on books that talk about handmade films without camera.
It doesn't have to be technical since I would like a broad range of ideas and
notes, and ideally they can be pdf, so I can share with the fellow
participants.

I saw a post by Gregory Zinman on his new book, and became curious….
