Puzzling 'ps aux' output

2000-10-08 Thread Dampure, Pierre Y.

Just noticed that some of the processes running on my system (-current
as of Oct 2) seem to report a startup time in UTC rather than local time
(see attached). Is this normal behaviour?

[Fwd: Problems with new PCI bus space implementation?]

2000-09-03 Thread Dampure, Pierre Y.

Forwarded for completeness, since the message I sent yesterday didn't
draw any attention...

"Dampure, Pierre Y." wrote:

 Doug,

Prior to yesterday, my last world / kernel rebuild was on August 25th.
Since yesterday, any attempt at generating a kernel results in an image
 that:

 1. Does not recognise my on-board fxp.
 2. Does not recognise my PCI Adaptec 2940UW

plus maybe some other things, but it's a bit difficult to track
everything on a scrolling screen and I do not have a second PC I could
 use as a serial console.

Because all my disks are SCSI, it is obviously a bit difficult to dig
much further but, as mentioned in a previous message to -current, a
pnpscan -v does detect a SCSI adapter.

The problem exists whether I use an SMP kernel or not.

The board is an Intel OR840 (Kitty Hawk) and the attached should
described pretty much everything better than I could (of course, the
dmesg and mptable outputs were generated with my previous kernel)

Could you please let me know what to try in order to help tracking down
 the problem?

Adaptec 2940UW not probed any further?

2000-09-02 Thread Dampure, Pierre Y.

I CVSup'd this morning around 05:00 BST, then make -DCLOBBER world /
mergemaster / sh MAKEDEV all / buildkernel / installkernel. My Adaptec
2940UW is no longer probed at boot time.

/boot/device.hints contains the proper entries and a pnpscan -v detects
a SCSI controller.

Attached are my current kernel configuration file and the corresponding
hints, which have been copied to /boot/device.hints.

I'm a bit at loss here and could really do with some help...

Many thanks,

PYD

Ok, I give up. It seems that the world change from exit to sys_exit
broke the world build, but I can't figure out where. I've fixed every
occurence of SYS_exit in the source tree (this one seems to be
src/lib/csu/i386/crt0.c, but there were some in gdb as well), and
removed /usr/obj - and I still get the following error from
 buildworld:

I think this might be due to the fact that, for some reason, the build
is still using the old syscall.h (the one that references SYS_exit
rather than SYS_sys_exit -- ie. the installed one rather than the newly
generated one). The funny thing here is I would have expected a make
-DCLOBBER to take care of that...

It is not fixed. Th current version of /usr/ports/Mk/bsd.ports.mk still
has an OS version test to determine whether to use the -L flag --
committed by Satoshi Asami after the initial "no -L, now -L" move. The
move was later backed out, but not this change.

The whole issue of mtree behaviour has been discussed ad nauseam on
cvs-all. Up until a concensus is reached, it's most probably easier to
locally override MTREE_ARGS.

I'm somewhat surprised by the resident size of XFree86-4 and mfs... from
memory, the resident size of mfs was around 30Mb up until today (no
recollection as to what it was fro XFree86-4, though). FWIW, this is
just after a reboot.

Hmmm. Something definitely looks strange, 'cause since this morning if I
do:

telnet localhost (or telnet to ANY host, either in my host file or in
DNS)

I get:

localhost: no address associated with name

whereas a 'ping localhost' works perfectly fine (and so does a telnet
127.0.0.1)

Any clues?

This breaks installworld, as the following diff:

+MLINKS+=unvis.3 strunvis.3 strunvisx.3

should have been:

+MLINKS+=unvis.3 strunvis.3 unvis.3 strunvisx.3

FWIW, I DID have a look at the archives before posting... the only
thread that looks remotely related is:

http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=3392426+3394340+/usr/local/www/db/text/1999/freebsd-current/19990509.freebsd-current

but this is in the case of IDE drives, not SCSI... CAM reports my drives
as having a (255H 63S/T 1106C) geometry, so even with a 512Mb root
partition I am still under the 1023 cylinders limit (if even applicable
to SCSI devices).

Boot Oddities

2000-06-27 Thread Dampure, Pierre Y.

Apologies if this ought to be in -questions rather than -current, but
since I first noticed the problem on 5.0-2621-CURRENT...

The above snapshot was installed on a brand new system (OR840, 2x733EB,
512MB RDRAM, 1xAHA2940UW, 4x9.1Gb Barracuda). The disk organisation is

Default: F5

Selecting F5 (or letting the timer run to completion) leads to the

 At a guess, you don't use /boot/loader?
The loader seems to be no longer optional, see
 http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=17422

This problem has been discussed several times in the "questions" mailing
list, and R. Ermilov kindly mailed 2 patches:

http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=1186602+1196206+/usr/local/www/db/text/2000/freebsd-questions/2409.freebsd-questions

(While I'm at it, may I suggest that the patches be committed? I'm using
them for more than a month now on 4.0-Stable, and they work just fine.)

My system has 4 SCSI disks, W2K on disk 0, FreeBSD on 1, 2 and 3
(FreeBSD Multiboot installed on disk 0; disks 1, 2 and 3 all in
dedicated mode). At boot time, boo2 throws out a 'No /boot/loader'
messages, then proceeds to load the kernel normally.

So... I guess indeed I do not use /boot/loader, though not of my own
will.

Thanks for the pointers!

Problems with nlist on -current?

2000-06-25 Thread Dampure, Pierre Y.

I installed 5.0-2621-CURRENT on a new system (OR840, 2x733EB, 512MB
RDRAM) and had problems with top / systat / vmstat all failing after
reporting problems with nlist:

When using top:
top: nlist failed
When using systat:
systat: nlist: can't find following symbols:
_ccpu
_fscale
When using vmstat:
vmstat: undefined symbols:
_kmemstatistics _bucket _zlist

Later CVsup did not cure the issue. The problems happen regardless of
the kernel used (original GENERIC, recompiled GENERIC, custom UP or
custom MP)

Any clues?
