multiple ports trees
This message may inadvertently get sent twice. For some reason, mx1.freebsd.org has been rejecting messages from my work address. Here's the message that I originally attempted to post: Thanks! cmh -- BEGIN SNIP -- Hello, list! I've got about six production servers and a couple of workstations running FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE and 6.2-PRERELEASE. Some of these machines are sitting in DMZ, the others are internal. Currently, each of them has their own ports tree. How terrible of an idea would it be to take one of the production servers that isn't really doing a whole lot of work, and make it's /usr/ports available over NFS to the other machines? Am I headed in a bad direction here? Also, what about user accounts between machines? I got to thinking that because some of the servers have the same user accounts, would it be possible to share a password file or home directories? Should I build another box strictly for this purpose? If so, could you point me to some documentation for achieving such a goal? Thank you for your time! cmh -- Christopher M. Firefox and flash revisited. Don't shoot me for this post.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 OK, let me preface this by saying flash 7 was marked broken for a reason (a very good one at that). I'm probably going to be stepping on some toes here and I'd like to apologize in advance. I've managed to install the broken port by changing a couple of files and using macromedia's own package. It was a no-brainer. I don't recommend doing this by any means. I've carried out this installation for two reasons, one was for development on an internal machine that never touches the net. Second because of the sheer volume of people asking about how to do this, I was curious to see if it could be done. I've detailed the process here: http://altbit.org/?p=207 Let me say again, that this is a VERY bad idea. There are serious implications in installing this port. Modification of the port's files could probably break something that I don't completely understand as well. Use this at your own risk. One last time, I'd like to apologize for stepping on any toes, but I understand the annoyance of this port not functioning. Thank you. cmh - -- C.M. I've detailed the process here: http://altbit.org/?p=207 To get the distinfo file, just run 'make makesum', it's a lot easier. Commenting out 'RESTRICTED' is not required. Let me say again, that this is a VERY bad idea. If it's a bad idea then why do you tell people how to do it? You could perhaps just send in a PR with your changes and the maintainer and the committers will take a look at it. --jona Thanks for the 'make makesum' and RESTRICTED tips, while I know my way around the ports system, there are still a few odds and ends that I don't completely understand. I need to read more about it. As for the PR, I didn't actually change anything but the Makefile and distinfo. If I could, I'd do something useful with flash but it's not open source, after all. I posted it because I know the feeling of frustration when something won't work. I prefaced it with the whole bad idea spill because it can still be used for internal purposes like I had previously mentioned (i.e. the development box at my office that never touches the net). I'm really sorry if I'm coming off wrong here. I'm probably not following etiquette too well. I'll look into a PR, though I don't know that it'll do much good. I'm not looking to start any wars, I just wanted to help out. cmh - -- C.M. firefox + flash translation
Greetings all! I was thumbing through the archives and noticed that someone posted a link to the following site: http://www.unixlike.com.br/?p=%2081 They mentioned they couldn't read the language it was written in, so I translated it. Hopefully this will help some people. It was written in Brazilian portuguese. My translation is available at: http://altbit.org/pseudorandom/unixlike_translation.txt Warm regards, cmh -- Christopher M. problems with fetch
Greetings! I posted this message to freebsd-stable, and a user suggested that this may be the proper list. I don't know how kosher reposts are, so feel free to scold me if necessary. The person that suggested this list also suggested that I try using 'fetch -p'. That was the first thing I tried, as my initial thoughts were that it could be a firewall issue. Using 'fetch -p' returns the same error(s). Thank you! cmh Original message: I'm a first time poster, so forgive me if this is the wrong list or if I break etiquette. Fetch frequently fails for me when installing ports via pkg_add or directly from the ports tree. Regardless of the port I'm trying to add, it almost always returns the following... Re: problems with fetch
What do these commands yield? locale [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ 176:0# locale LANG= LC_CTYPE=C LC_COLLATE=C LC_TIME=C LC_NUMERIC=C LC_MONETARY=C LC_MESSAGES=C LC_ALL= alias | grep -i fet alias | grep -i get env | grep -i fet env | grep -i get These don't return anything. file `which fetch` [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ 181:1# file `which fetch` /usr/bin/fetch: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (FreeBSD), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped grep fetch /etc/make.conf Returns nothing. Are you able to use the ftp client manually and d-load the files? I am unable to use fetch to download the packages over ftp, but wget works just peachy over ftp. I don't have any gui clients, but firefox seems to work without a hitch as well. In a pinch, there are also some workarounds. You could try alias fetch wget -c, which might work. Setting 'FETCH_CMD=/usr/local/bin/wget -c' in /etc/make.conf should definitely work around this issue. Sorry I'm not more help. I'm currently in the process of rebuilding world to track 6 STABLE, in hopes that it will do some good. I'll give your workarounds a shot, it sure beats manually grabbing packages.
