FreeBSD wireless difficulty

2004-07-10 Thread Douglas Korinke
Hello,

I had been having difficulty recently with getting my fbsd 4.9 machine to
connect to my linksys home wireless router and because of the problem, had
to upgrade to fbsd 5.2.1 and noticed more activity out of my wireless card.

The computer is a Toshiba Satellite 2405-S221 with a Avaya Wireless PCMCIA
card using the wi drivers to run it. I'm able to associate with the router
at home and am able to ping it without a problem but I can not browse
webpages and the like. I also have bsd-airtools installed and have used
dstumbler, the only problem being is that the program doesn't see my
wireless card.

Any tips or suggestions?

Doug

Wireless client problems

2004-07-02 Thread Douglas Korinke
Hi, I'm currently running fbsd 4.9 on a Toshiba Satellite 2405-S221.

The problem I am having is that after I install and configure the wireless
card, I observe no activity between the card and the cpu.

I know for certain that my pccard slots are fully functional and that fbsd
is loading the appropriate drivers, but I am puzzled with the lack of
activity.

To setup the client I used the example from the FBSD handbook, 20.3.3.4.1
minus all the WEP encryption crap:

ifconfig wi0 ssid ssid goes here inet ip goes here netmask blah

I choose the IP right off the top of my head, I simply make sure that the IP
is not being used by any other machines on the network.

Here is my output from dmesg:

Trying to install Flash... BUT

2004-06-28 Thread Douglas Korinke
S, I am on a Toshiba Satellite 2405-S221 with FBSD 4.9 running KDE 3.1.4
and attempting to get a Flash plugin working..

So I goto the HowTo at KDE's site at:
http://freebsd.kde.org/howtos/konqueror-flash.php

and follow the directions to the line.. but nothing is still going for me.

I decide to try it again a few times and still nothing until a brilliant
stroke of genius tells me to check my KDE version.. the HowTo calls for KDE-
3.2.3 aduhh, well I finally follow the first step and pkg_delete 3.1.4 and I
try to install 3.2.3 from the ports collection.

The install finds all the dependencies except for kwalletbackend, then
attempts to install it when this warning comes up...

Dependency warning: used OpenSSL version contains known vulnerabilities

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks a lot,

Problems with Kuser

2004-06-22 Thread Douglas Korinke
I am running FBSD 4.9 with KDE 3.1.2 on a Toshiba Satellite 2405-S221.

Problem arose today when using kuser while under root and adding a user with
the program.

I shut down x windows system and kde and shutdown the laptop and returned to
it later that night to find out my password for root was wrong, even my
password for my non-root account was wrong. The only user that I was able to
log in under was the one I setup with kuser.

Thanks for the help,
Doug

Toshiba Laptop Touch Mouse Problem

2004-06-21 Thread Douglas Korinke
The touch mouse is an Alps Pointing Device with a middle scroll wheel and I
have gotten the mouse to work before on FreeBSD4.9

I'm still running fbsd4.9 but the mouse is not functional in xwindows, any
ideas what might be going on?

Fresh Installing FreeBSD 5.0 Release

2004-06-20 Thread Douglas Korinke
I was currently getting help from a person for getting my wireless pc card
working on my laptop when we both came to the conclusion that my kernel
source had either not been installed, or was hiding very well. I wasn't able
to get a hold of the original install cd so I used a 5.0 release from a
family members collection.

I attempted to remove 4.9 and cleanly install 5.0 onto the laptop but ran
into some interesting errors and it has put me in quite a bind.

The drive for which I'm wanting to install FreeBSD on has been whipped clean
but the 5.0 install cd hangs up when loading device drivers for the kernel.

At the moment I'm stuck on what to do myself, if there is a way to get the
drive formatted so that I can try a clean install of 5.0 that would be great,
but if not, 4.9 installed very cleanly.

Thanks,
Doug

Miscellaneous Problems

2004-06-19 Thread Douglas Korinke
Hi, I'm a 2 week old FreeBSD 4.9 user who has never used UN*X in my entire
life and I was running into a few problems that I haven't been able to find
help with.

I have been attempting to get my pcmcia wireless card running on my laptop, I
have identified the driver to install (wi), but am quite clueless on how to
do so.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot,
Doug
