Hi i want to ask a question about the new release of FreeBSD (9) is it posible to run this release /whit GUI/ in IBM Thinkpad 1161 217 whit this specs 500 mhz Intel Celeron processor 64mb Ram and 5gb HDD I've been using even slower Thinkpads (300MHz), there are a few things to be aware of. Check on http://www.thinkwiki.org if the ethernet connection is supported, also the graphic card (if you need a Windowmanager). Soundcard can be an issue too. Try to get some more RAM for it. On internet auctions you find them for a few bucks, check on the thinkwiki if the type fits in. From 256MB on it works well, good is 512. The slow processor doesnt matter much if you have enough RAM. Since the harddisk is not very large, you may want to take a look to NetBSD (sorry FreeBSD-gurus). NetBSD is targeted at minimal or exotic computers, you can easily install the precompiled packages without a portstree. I use it for all my Thinkpads (Thinkpad 600, T23 and X31). Such scripts for backup are set up in minutes and it happily copies the files to the server. If there are already user accounts on the server, it could be really easy. I think it depends on the scale of the network. Has anybody out there taken the BSDA certification exams?
Hi List, on Saturday the 5th of May there is the Central-European BSD day in Vienna. They also give the chance to make the BSDA certification exams. I went through the 'BSD Associate Exam Objectives' to get some idea the questions. But I still wonder, how NetBSD users get away with the style of questions and solutions asked. Its some years ago that I used FreeBSD and I have for sure forgotten lots of details or never ran into certain commands/solutions since changing to NetBSD. Has any of you taken the exams? Has somebody told you about the exams? By the Exam Objectives I think its not that easy to pass ... Installation troubles
Hi Daemons, yesterday I tried to install FreeBSD 9 on my 'new' laptop - an IBM X31. Since this model has no CD or floppy drive I copied the memstick-file to such an USB-thing and tried to boot. The laptop freezes when the kernel scans for the UBS-ports, booting impossible. Now my question: can I take the harddisk out, install FreeBSD 9 over another laptop (with the X31-harddisk inside) and put the installed harddrive back to the X31? Is there anything else besides the rc.d-stuff what will/will not get installed if I use the 'wrong' computer? The old hd-cotent will be deleted, the new laptop will only be FreeBSD. Thanks for all the hints - now I have some point to go on. First I try to use 8.2 from the memstick. If that fails I get such a little adapter and install it from a normal PC (using the CD). My IBM Thinkpad does that trick. But its some hardware-function and can be switched via special key + FN8. Maybe download the service or installation manual for your laptop and find some option? Maybe also something in the setup? The same here - I use a Sandisk Compact Flash with 8GB on my Thinkpad. The thing runs the whole day and I didnt notice any failure (using NetBSD). With a simple adapter card it formats and works like an ata-disk. Reading is quite fast! A good combination for stationary computers might be to install FreeBSD and keep the 'busy writing' like /home, /var and /tmp on a traditional harddisk (writing is much faster there). The other more static stuff like kernel, /usr, /etc, /dev and so on can be left on the Flash-card. Will be great for booting and opening larger programs. Something traditional on my laptop - I use Blackbox 07.01. It even takes less memory and appears a little more responsive then Fluxbox. Its a pity the developer didnt release any updates for years. Will see how long it stands with more contemporary Unix systems. The cheapo way, if you get a model without a harddisk, is a compact flash card with an adapter for a few bucks. I currently have this combination in my Thinkpad (although its an ata to CF-adapter). Works great, lightweight, shockproof and reads really fast from the 'harddisk'. Downside is the slower writing - but enough RAM makes sure it doesnt swap to the CF-Card. Eight Gigabyte is enough for me, most data are on the server anyway. Highly recommendable.. If you prefer terminal applications you may get happy with blackbox. Its one of the smallest, but fully functional GUIs. And it is still kosher according to Unix standards. Its my favorite, I even prefer it to fluxbox, what is a little fancier. Opera 10.5 - bad looking fonts on printer
Hi Daemons, if I print from Opera via CUPS (Samsung ML 1610 on fileserver, CUPS client from workstation) I get very ugly results. The proportions of the letters dont fit, sometimes letters overlapping. No matter what font comes from the website to print - Opera chooses always this bad font, the font spacing is terrible. Other programs like Abiword, OpenOffice a.s.o. print well. My question: Does anybody have such troubles with BSD-Opera 10.5 too? Is there any font-port I have to install to get decent results? Is this a bug in the Opera BSD-port? All ideas welcome - I have no clue whats causing this problems.. I sign here too - Lucas' Absolute FreeBSD covers practically all the aspects when you new to Unix. Its a good choice. A seperate computer for trying out and break'n'reinstall is also a good idea for a start. Its like learning a foreign language. At the beginning you may wonder how anybody can ever understand this mumbo jumbo. Then you will get an idea of it and go into an experimental stage where many things go wrong. And after some years you wonder that there was a time before where you could not understand such an obvious, logical concept. Henry, you may have installed xorg with the HAL-option on. If you want to try without it go to the /usr/ports/x11-servers/xorg-server. No floppy-images for FreeBSD 8.0 installation anymore?
Hi Daemons, I use to install FreeBSD with the floppies, then choosing the ftp-install. It was quite a while ago I had done so -- but now I see the x.flp images are gone. Or maybe I just havent found them on the ftp-site?? I cannot boot this computer from the SCSI-CD drives. Is there any chance to get 8.0 for floppies? Yes, just checked it. There is a 'boot from usb-cdrom' option in the setup. I guess I have to sacrifice a usb-stick for the installation. Will it work this way? This is not yet updated in the the handbook -- but the 8.0-RELEASE-amd64-memstick.img seems to be a file I have to dump on the usb-stick. Is this the boot-file I need for the ftp-install? Hi Daemons, I have just installed the brandnew mc 4.7 - now there is still an old little annoyance: Being root I can switch away the mc-commander and use the shell, CTRL+o does the trick. But as a normal user CTRL+o blanks the screen, no shell prompt appears and hitting a key just shows mc again. The subshell support must be working, all is fine if I am root. ifconfig - GUI interface available?
Hi Daemons, I use my laptop in different wifi networks. To choose the ssid, passwords and such necessities I have to use the all-knowing and confusing 'ifconfig'. Question: Is there a GUI replacement for ifconfig? Where I can scan, choose the ssid and do other basic things? I havent found anything in the ports collection.. Hi Andreas, yes - I have studied the handbook, it was necessary to set all up. Its merely a matter of comfort. Like on OSX or the infamous MS-thing, there is a simple window. It shows all the ssid, you click on one (maybe the password is already assigned) and you get the certain wifi net. I use the laptop in different networks, often its auto selecting the wrong one. It would be great to point and click and get the connection.. Wifi Router and FreeeBSD - need some hints..
Hi Daemons, I need some basic information about Wifi routers - very little I know about it. There is my FreeBSD-server (the other one is Linux) and some clients are connected with a LAN-switch. Now I want to add a Wifi Router to the network. I am not sure if I can set up the router without using some Windows software what comes with the router. My questions: I just connect the Wifi router to the LAN and it should work? Or do I need any software (drivers) to keep the thing running? There must be some software to 'talk' to the router - for setup. Is there anything available for FreeBSD or do I need Windows environment (what I dont have available)? What did you use to install your Wifi-router? Not a long time ago I got an old Thinkpad 600. With 300MHz and 165MB Ram. Also the same challenge - small and fast ports for daily work. I run X11 with fluxbox (installed without! hal support). Recommendable ports are: Opera (smaller then Firefox) or even Elinks (there is a setting 'graphic mode'). Mutt for e-mails, vim (also gvim) is my text editor - it replaces word processing software. Centerim for instant messaging (instead of pidgin). Axyftp is a fast ftp-client, also for X11. Generally all the motif-programs are small and fast. For a few bucks I got the PCMCIA-Card TP-Link TL-WN610G. It works perfect, but only without hal. And my battery lasts easily over three hours, almost four with just a text editor running. Maybe you go for a bigger harddisk? Costs a few bucks and will have enough space for BSD 7.2 (what I use) and some of the ports? Compiling your own kernel and cleaning out the kernel source and the distfiles of the ports is also a good idea.. It's builtin trackpoint is not working anymore, but the Thinkpad's is in perfect condition, so I have a good pointing device. Furthermore, the Thinkpad's keyboard is excellent, compared to the Toshiba and to modern notebooks with their floppy-sloppy keys. Is this imaginable at all? Any ideas, comments or suggestions are appreciated. PS. Of course I would buy one of those modern Netbooks to have the same effect, but why buy when the stuff I have arund anywill will work, too? Fetchmail freaks out
Hi Daemons, there happen strange things when I boot my laptop, FreeBSD 7.2, Fetchmail 6.3.11 (newest). .. Starting fetchmail. Starting fetchmail. fetchmail: can't accept options while a background fetchmail is running .. (Yes, the 'Starting' appears twice) My /etc/rc.conf contains: fetchmail_enable=YES My /usr/local/etc/fetchmailrc contains: poll MYDOMAINNAME.COM, protocol pop3, no dns user MYUSERNAME there with password XX is MYUSERNAME here My /usr/local/etc/rc.d/fetchmail exists and is the default one from the port-install. That should be all the files I have. Fetchmail even works, but: What are these double starting-messages (#ps -ax shows just one fetchmail running)? What am I doing wrong? How to get rid of it? Deleting the kernel source - just with #rm?
Daemons, a little question. I just compiled a nice, slim kernel on my laptop, but I dont want to carry all the kernel sources around there. Is it ok just to #rm the content of the /usr/src directory? And will I get it completely back from sysinstall or the FreeBSD-servers? Or is there a more elegant solution on FreeBSD? This should be fine. Since you've built a custom kernel you may want to keep a copy of your kernel build config (LINT) file, eg. /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/HOSTNAME. Note that you can't use freebsd-update to patch a custom (non-GENERIC) kernel. You can restore the kernel source code by extracting the ssys.?? binaries (normally found in the /src/ directory, eg. ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/7.2-RELEASE/src/ ) using install.sh (found in the same directory). Probably also with sysinstall, but I don't recall the steps to do that. I had similar troubles with hal. The easiest solutions is to get rid of hal. Deinstall it. The xorg-package you can compile without hal (use make configure and uncheck hal) and it will work. There are drivers for the sis chipset, for the case you havent discovered them: /usr/ports/x11-drivers/xf86-video-sis Also the already mentioned /usr/ports/x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse And then reinstall /usr/ports/x11/xorg (with a make config before) I have a similar combination, though using the traditional ps2 mouse.. I personally prefer postfix too. It seems to be a relieable program, setting it up is easier then sendmail. It also integrates well with mailman (for the case you want to host mailing lists). Yes. What about bogofilter. This port is smart, I always wonder how intelligent it dedects spam, just by the content. Even works with Chinese messages.. Setting it up requires some time and patience (its a filter what plugs in at procmail). IBM Stinkpad and Wifi
Hi Daemons, I have some troubles to get connected to an open Wifi-Net. Its an older IBM Stinkpad 600 and I bought a new PCMCIA-card for it. Chipset of the card is from Atheros, this is recommended by the FreeBSD Handbook. I boot the Laptop, the drivers seem to be compiled in the generic Kernel. Booting shows something like: ath0: Atheros 5212 mem 0xff9f-0xff9f irq 17 at device 2.0 on pci2 ath0: Ethernet address: 00:11:95:d5:43:62 ath0: mac 7.9 phy 4.5 radio 5.6 Good. Then I try: # ifconfig ath0 up scan # (I tried this in a cool café, with cool people there and a cool open access point..) Nothing. There should be a list of the available access points. Is that right? Something I missed with the setup? I tried: #kldload wlan_wep.ko #kldload wlan_ccmp.ko #kldload wlan_tkip.ko ..and BSD 7.2, a very recent version, tells me that these files already exist (so the kernel took already care of it). What am I doing wrong?? All ideas appreciated! FreeBSD IBM Thinkpad - What Model to Choose?
Hi Daemons, I bet there are FreeBSD-on-Thinkpad users out there. I need some help.. At the moment I search for a laptop, a used model from auction sites, preferably an IBM Thinkpad. There is a huge number of different models, even a Wiki with all the specs. But all the info doesn't help me to decide what model works best for me with FreeBSD. I also have no idea if the BSD drivers work out of the box. No dual boot required - I'll dump the Windows stuff. The model I search for is a cheap low-end type. Small harddisk is fine too, it even can be slow - I use mostly vim, fluxbox, a few small gtk-ports and even get by with a text browser like lynx. Otherwise I would really reqire the Thinkpad to be slim and have some kind of low power consumption (this depends on the kind of processor I guess - I have no clue what processor is a good choice). And an opportunity to use a PCMCIA-Card for a Wifi connection (and drivers for them!). Do you have any good/bad experiences with certain IBM Thinkpads? Is there any special model (line) I should look for? Are there any options I should look for or avoid (no BSD drivers available i.e)? Aloha Al, its all kosher with the monitor, cables and graphic card. When I open a website, like a magazine, then I have i.e 10 pictures showing up well and two totally in purple. It must be a software issue. Just wonder where it comes from. Firefox 3.5? The Firefox libraries? Screendriver? Freebsd 7.2? A bug in the graphic card hardware (has never done this)? Or some combination of it. I will check for Adam's suggestion to take a look at the update notes and the dependencies. Is a wacky bug, thats sure. Purple photos on firefox..
Hi Daemons, I wonder if the same happens on your computers too. Freebsd 7.2 Firefox 3.5 - sometimes the photos, mostly the JPG I guess, appear visible but in a deep purple shade. It seems to be some firefox bug. When I save the certain purple JPG and display it with another program on my comp it appears normal. Screenshot would look ok on any computer.. And it just happens occasionally. Maybe some screen engine bug in ff35? Or my graphic card driver (sis-card) is allergic to ff35? Very strange, all other X11 programs display correct.. Not even a big problem if its just on my computer. But I thought there are other Freebsd users having this certain problem too. Hi Daemons, strange, I have the manpage of strfile, but not the binary itself. I think its supposed to be content of every freebsd default installation? Or not? Its not a port, isnt it? Even tried that. In /usr/ports/games/freebsd-games are the classical games, but not the fortunes and the strfile. Have it installed now, still no strfile. If I try installing the fortunes, the port-makefile complains that there is no strfile available. Do you daemons have the binary 'strfile' on your system? Could you please check and tell me! Midnight Commander's subshell gone..
Hi Daemons, I have just updated /usr/ports/misc/mc to Mignight Commander 4.6.1. As root I can switch with CTRL+O to the shell prompt, all fine. But as a normal user the shell prompt disappears when I hit CTRL+O. Both xterm and without X I have the same symptoms. So I have set all mc-related files in /usr/local/share/mc to 777 to check. I use both in /root/ as well in /home/herbs/ the same .profile and ./mc files -- still not working.. The previous mc-version ran just fine. What am I doing wrong?? Ah, BSD you use.. its likely that /usr/bin/lp what you invoke is the wrong one (there is the path set to it). If you have installed the cups-port, there will be another lp -- /usr/local/bin/lp -- the one cups uses (compare the filesize). Rename /usr/bin/lp to /usr/bin/lp.backup so it will not use this one and then try again, invoking lp should take /usr/local/bin/lp then. The linux progs run very well, what I can tell with my modest amount of programs using this mode. BSD uses a seperate directory what contains all linux-bins and it integrates well. Also the speed is like a normal Linux distro. Maybe it is a good idea to get an old 20GB harddisk, change it and give it a try while leaving your old HD with your current installation intact? RAM Swap Speed
Hi Daemons, recently I had to add some more RAM on a workstation. Was 512MB before and is 2GB now, the reason was to give some graphic apps more space. But to my surprise the workstation ran faster--but before adding RAM it did NOT make use of the swap-partition and after the big RAM chip of course not too (checked it with #top). This was a Slackware installation. Had anyone experienced such effect on BSD as well? Hi Jon, all kosher here, I have my FreeBSD workstation and will put some more RAM into it. Just found it out on a penguin.. Honestly, I would never think that adding RAM to a comp with still unused space left could speed it up. Was just a coincident to find it out. But it clearly explains what I noticed--especially Firefox (lots of cache files) and the email client (switching folders with many lil files in there) had shown some difference. Will give the computer store a visit tomorrow.. In FreeBSD top look at the Cache and Buf values up top. If you're doing a lot of file I/O, this can make a noticeable difference, particularly if you're repeatedly reading the same files. Thanks to all the input I found a solution what works for me: FreeBSD 7.0 and Firefox 3.0a2 (the firefox-devel port) 1. I deinstalled swfdec. 2. Closed Firefox and renamed .mozilla to .mozilla.backup 3. Started firefox so to generate a new and clean .mozilla 4. #make install /usr/ports/www/nspluginwrapper 5. Downloaded http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlashP2_Platform=Linux --the .tar.gz format. 6. Extract libflashplayer.so from install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz and copy it to ~/.mozilla/plugins 7. Then, as normal user: $nspluginwrapper -v -a -i (to install) $nspluginwrapper -l (to check if its installed) 8. Copied the settings, like bookmarks.html and other stuff like themes from .mozilla.backup to .mozilla (dont copy the whole bunch back not to overwrite the plugin settings) 9. My /etc/rc.conf has the entry linux_enable=YES -- I suppose this is necessary. That way you can enter the wonderful world of annoying advertisment even without using Windows.. You could backup all the xfce files with the actual permissions and then set them all to 777 and try to start it. Austin, I forgot to mention that I tried winecfg/graphicstab/DPI. It enlarges the content of the prog (like the written text in notepad) but not the menu.. There must be some way to define the font type and size the menu displays. Didnt found much in the documentation too. Maybe it is related that I use the ttf-fonts from the Unix installation. The ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts directory is empty. But in notepad I can change to all these Unix available fonts, so wine is able to access it. They should also somehow be available to the menu. Thats strange. Cups server and client
Hi Daemons, a basic question before I run into experiments. I run a Cups printserver installation on a Slackware server. And now I want to connect from a BSD7.0 workstation to this server to print. I have to install Cups as well on the BSD-client? Is that right? Or can I access it even simply by setting up printcap? I checked in the ports and find /usr/ports/www/linux-flashplugin9 - but it obviously requires linux support. Is there anything more elegant, like a BSD version of it? Should be more then enough with the graphic card. My desktop comp is an AMD Duron 1,2Ghz, 512MB ram and the graphic card has 32MB. X11 makes 1280x1024 in truecolor mode without much effort (is a good graphic card what is integrated in the mainboard, SIS-chip). Can watch videos and dragging windows without delay and so on. So nothing to worry about.. Install question - sysinstall
Hi List, a short question: Installing a fresh BSD System gives me among others the option 'X-User'. In the books I just find a hint its without source code, what I really dont need. But is there anything else but the source code what I will miss later for a desktop installation or a simple webserver?? Anybody tried this?
