I added "exec /usr/local/kde4/bin/startkde" to ~/.xinitrc but when I do "startx" I get the message above. The box is a remote one. After the error, startx does not exit and if I use x11vnc I see a black screen with a box that says "Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation" and a "Okay" button. If I click it, "x11vnc" exits but "startx" does not. However, if I run "/usr/local/kde4/bin/startkde" and "x11vnc" with "-auth" option, I can see the kde4 login screen and after it accepts my credentials I see "Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation". If I click "okay", x11vnc exits. I was unable to replicate this behaviour - it happened only once (kde does not run without a X server so I'm presuming I had some X process hanging somewhere) I've been google-ing for quite some time now and I am unable to find anything relevant. The machine is ~800 km away so direct interaction is impossible. Any ideas are welcomed. PS: nothing relevant in messages.log, all.log and Xorg.log. The video card is a nvidia FX5500. PS2: on a vmware machine, (fresh install of F-BSD 8.0 - kernel+base) I had no problems. PS3: I have reinstalled all kde4 packages (pkg_add) and rebuild libthr from source but with no effect :( ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

After about 5 minutes of waiting, thats all I get. I've looked around to see where else I may have kde things running and think I've killed them all. I've also moved my .kde directory and allowed for the build of a new one. I'm currently in a gnome session but I would like to run KDE apps like Kile for example. Any help of where to start looking or things to do to help diagonose the problem would be appreciated. thanks b ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

I had to weld up a special grill to go over a fire pit, and it took a long time. Then of course, it had to be tested with steaks, and of course, lots of beer. It worked great, looks good, I might have to sell some of these. I think I've exhausted all of the things I can tell you to check. I haven't exhausted all of my knowledge, but I can't think of anything else to say. Somewhere, something doesn't have the correct permissions. Startkde is a script, if you go through it and check the permissions on what it's calling up, it may give you a better idea of where the problem is. When you find the problem, and I'm sure you will, it's probably going to be something so easy that you'll be kicking yourself for not seeing it. The brain is a funny thing, it will most often see what is expected, rather than what is. startkde: cannot start kdeinit. Check your installation
6.2-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 6.2-PRERELEASE #4: Mon Oct 2 08:40:06 PDT 2006 I cannot start kde. Installed kde 3.5.4 from pkg_add -r kde and everything installed fine. I put in my ~/.xinitrc file: startkde but I keep getting this error: /usr/local/bin/startkde: permission denied startkde: could not start kdeinit. check your installation I have changed the entry in .xinitrc to : exec startkde # and to /usr/local/bin/startkde with the same results. I also cannot start kde as root, I get the same thing. kdeinit is: -r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 39876 Oct 6 01:18 /usr/local/bin/kdeinit I have tried changing permissions on kdeinit but with the same result. I have also removed the kdebase package and reinstalled it, but with the same results. I've searched everywhere and have seen the same problems posted with different OS's and versions of kde but nothing solid as to solutions. anybody got any ideas? __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Show us your ~/.xinit ! for kdm/xdm/gdm, -> check your hostname. Try to run xdm, gdm and kdm manually and let us know if there is any difference between them. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Brett Wiggins Sent: Thursday, June 17, 2004 8:50 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: kdm and startkde hello, I am having some problems with startkde and kdm. I thinks it's because startx launches X before it starts startkde, and startkde only attempts to launch KDE, which isn't going to work if there is no X server running. When I edit /etc/ttys to enable a graphical login, kdm runs but nothing happens when I log in. The login screen is just reloaded. Any help would be great. What about XDM? Is that working? Is your /var/log/XFree86 giving you any useful output? (connection refused or something?) IIRC, you simply need to edit this line in /etc/ttys: ttyv8 "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon" xterm off secure Change it to read: ttyv8 "/usr/local/bin/kdm" xterm on secure This should start everything for you! I'm going to test it now to be sure, but I think that's right. HTH -- Eric F Crist Keep your pecker hard and your powder dry, and the world WILL turn. pgpK0g1CCiXS0.pgp Description: signature
Re: startkde
hello Eric, After installed the X window system and KDE I created the file ~/.xinitrc which contains; exec startkde after I created the file I could use startx to run KDE. I then setup KDM by editing the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession. I added the following to the file; case $# in 1) case $1 in kde) exec /usr/local/bin/startkde ;; failsafe) exec xtem -geometry 80x24-0-0 ;; esac esac Finally I added the following to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0; /usr/local/bin/kdmdesktop KDM loads but when I log in nothing happens, I just end up back at the login screen. This is all the info I can think of. If I missed any please let me know. Thanks again Brett On Thursday 17 June 2004 23:36, Brett Wiggins wrote: > hello, > I am having some problems with startkde. Generally, people could start a generic x session and run startkde from an xterm in that session. Having an "exec startkde" in your .xinitrc file just basically does this for you. As far as your other problem, we'd need more information about your setup. What did you do/not do to get kdm working. startkde
hello, I am having some problems with startkde. I have looked through the mailing list archive and the handbook and am still stuck. I set up my machine to run KDE as per the handbook chapter on the X window system. When I type startx KDE runs fine, when I type startkde I get the following output; xset: unable to open display "" xsetroot: unable to open display '' startkde: starting up ksplash: cannot connect to X Server kdeinit: aborting. $DISPLAY ot set Warning: Connect() failed: :no such file or directory ksmserver: cannot connect to X server startkde: shutting down... warning: connect() failed: :no such file or directory Error: Can't contact kdeinit! startkde: running shutdown scripts startkde: done When I run kdm the login screen loads but when I log in nothing happens, The login screen is just loaded again. I think That this may have somthing to do with startkde not working. Any help would be great as I can't figure out whats going wrong.
