FreeBSD website is not up to date

2013-07-24 Thread David Demelier
Hi,

There is a problem between :

http://www.freebsd.org/where.html

and

http://www.freebsd.org/fr/where.html

On the second one, 9.1-RELEASE is available for ia64 while it's not
for the english version.

Sorry if this is not the best lists for that question.

Regards,

whimsically launched with Internet Killed The Video Star kicking off a major
site that features -
* The ability to chat with facebook friends while watching music videos
uninterrupted
* Hours of daily music video programming, hand picked and compiled by real
humans, not computers
* The Daily Top Ten Music Videos based on charts, ticket sales, downloads and
buzz
* Daily Genre Stations for ROCK, RAP, POP, REGGE, PUNK, CHRISTIAN, ELECTRONIC,
COUNTRY and several cross over formats (all genres in one station)
* Task based stations to keep the user motivated while studying, cleaning the
house or trying to make out with someone
* Other sub-genres include music by era and a station devoted to female artists
with bold voices
* Thousands of Artist Stations that automatically send users from one like
minded artist to the next, allowing them to watch videos all day while getting
stuff done
* New music videos added daily with constantly rotating playlists allow users

Re: Broken link on your website

2012-07-14 Thread Thomas Mueller
Snippet from Robert Bonomi regarding spam from Emma Haze emmakh...@gmail.com:

Now, *PLEASE* stop bombarding the innocent users of the support mailing-list
with your ignorant, ill-informed, impossible-of-fullfilment nonsense.

Continued spamming off the mailing-list might well result in numerous people
deciding to forward all their junk email to you, as 'thanks' for wasting their
 time.

One problem with this is that spammers typically use phony email addresses:
either somebody else's or a nonexistent email address.

Subject: Re: Broken link on your website

 Hi!

I just wanted to follow up with you regarding the email I had sent you
about the broken link I found on your website. Please let me know if you
had the chance to look at both the broken link and my suggested
replacement. It would be great if my resource was used.

People looked. A *permanent* decisionwas made _NOT_ to use anything from
your phoney diploma-mill website.

Please let me know what you think!

We think you are an imbecilic spammer who couldn't catch a clue even
if you doused yourself in clue musk, and did the clue-mating dance
in the middle of a field full of randy clues, at the height of the
clue-rutting season.

How could _anyone_ possibly come to that conclusion, you ask?

Hint #1: *NOBODY* at the address you have repeatedly spammed has anything
to do with the site you found.

Hint #2: What you found was a _copy_ -- a sadly out-of-date (four years
or so) one -- of the official website.

Hint #3: The _official_ website removed that broken link *YEARS* ago.

Hint #4: Under no circumstances would the official site consider using
anything fom someone who is incapable of figuring out the
_correct_ contact address for the webmaster, and bombards a
 user-support mailing-list instead.

Hint #5: There is no way that the *unmaintained* 'copy' site would ever
use your 'resource'. If they were ever to update things, they
would simply pull a newer copy of the official website. Which
 eliminates the out-of-date link.

Now, *PLEASE* stop bombarding the innocent users of the support mailing-list
with your ignorant, ill-informed, impossible-of-fullfilment nonsense.

Continued spamming off the mailing-list might well result in numerous people
deciding to forward all their junk email to you, as 'thanks' for wasting their
time.

I really don't recommend that. Keep in mind not everyone can use the

And therein lies the problem. How do you maintain accessibility while
preventing bots from harvesting? You can't have your cake and eat it too...
:)

Only solution lies in a security gate of good filters and blocklists. But
occasionally one or two will still pass.

An email address can be hidden from bots without violating section 508,
for instance:

feenberg is at nber dot org

or some variant won't be picked up by a robot. But is it really practical
to treat an email address as a secret, when it will be shared with
hundreds of correspondents? I have mostly thought that was hopeless. We do
it on our website because we don't want to bother arguing with people.

Most bots use some rather sophisticated regexp pattern
matching nowadays, including some primitive JavaScript
parsing to defeat the most popular JS-based obfuscations.
This one is very, very obvious and among the easiest ones
(including the is variation). You couldn't hide from them

Indeed, so some settings might do with a tweak, to at least obfuscate
posters addresses, so that at least script kiddies are flumoxed.

I never intentionaly use any Reply to All function. In fact, this
mailer doesn't even have a button for that. You have to select where the
reply goes, after you hit the reply button, from a list of available
addresses in the incoming message header, that the mailer has recognised.

Just a thought as this problem is not going to go away.

Mk1 eyeball can still see what's what, but if you have to use the info,
you have to re-type it manually.

I really don't recommend that. Keep in mind not everyone can use the
Mk1 eyeball. Websites need to be accessible to blind people using
screen reader software, too.
And therein lies the problem. How do you maintain accessibility while
preventing bots from harvesting? You can't have your cake and eat it
too... :)

Only solution lies in a security gate of good filters and blocklists.
But occasionally one or two will still pass.

 Hi,

My name is Roy Mathew. I am new to FreeBSD. I had a look at the history of
 your operating system.

I suggest to everyone of you that you recommend to change/replace the
unnecessary picture right in front of your website.

The reasons you all have done hard-work and has become successful (big
companies use ur project). In that case, this is not the symbol that you
should be keeping in front of your website neither anywhere in your
 website.

Please visit http://www.freebsd.org/ to see the logo and the picture, both
of which I strongly recommend that you remove.

I am highly educated and qualified.

Hi Al Hadith (alias Roy Mathew),

What is it in particular that you don't like about the logo and the picture?

wondered if you would consider adding WebHosting.net to your list.
 http://www.freebsd.org/commercial/isp.html

We have been around since 1998 and focus on more advanced hosting needs
like cloud hosting, exchange hosting, and dedicated servers. We have
recently launched a new version of our site and are also doing a bit of a
push to have more people try our service.

If you would consider adding us to your list we would be incredibly
grateful and please let me know if you’d like any more information about
 WebHosting.net.

This is not a FreeBSD problem.

The most likely problem is that your FastCGI configuration handles more
paths than it should, including images, CSS and other non-fastcgi URLs.

Strictly _not_ a FreeBSD issue, but FWIW I thought maybe I'd respond anyway.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, as I haven't been keeping up
with the latest Apache news and stuff so the following may be out of touch.
I thought that at some point a couple of years ago that FastCGI became
deprecated in favor of mod_fcgid. Look at the dates on this page:

http://www.fastcgi.com/drupal/node/19

Apache has absorbed the mod_fcgid into the mainstream. Notice the dates on
the support page below seem to be more recent:

http://httpd.apache.org/mod_fcgid/

Since your website works OK with mod_fcgid why not use it because it works?

I use Apache with the event mpm and mod_fcgid, but am still using PHP 5.2.x.
For purposes of this problem the difference between my use of the event mpm
and you using worker should probably not be significant. I cannot properly
address your question concerning FastCGI as I do not use it. What I can do
is share some of my configs for my web development server using mod_fcgid.

httpd.conf:
[...]
LoadModule alias_module libexec/apache22/mod_alias.so
LoadModule rewrite_module libexec/apache22/mod_rewrite.so
#LoadModule php5_modulelibexec/apache22/libphp5.so
LoadModule fcgid_module libexec/apache22/mod_fcgid.so

[...]
Directory /usr/local/www/apache22/data

SetOutputFilter Deflate

AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/css text/javascript
application/javascript application/x-javascript text/xml application/xml
application/xhtml+xml

SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \\.(?:gif|jpe?g|png)$ no-gzip dont-vary

Options Indexes FollowSymLinks

AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all

# added for mod_fcgid
#SetHandler fcgid-script
FCGIWrapper /usr/local/bin/php-cgi .php
Options ExecCGI
# end of mod_fcgid change

/Directory

# added to enable mod_fcgid:

IfModule mod_fcgid.c
  AddHandler fcgid-script .fcgi .php
  SocketPath /var/run/fcgidsock/
  #SocketPath /var/run/fcgid_shm
  IPCConnectTimeout 10
  IPCCommTimeout 20
  OutputBufferSize 0
  MaxRequestsPerProcess 1024
/IfModule

# DirectoryIndex: sets the file that Apache will serve if a directory
# is requested.

IfModule dir_module
DirectoryIndex index.html index.php
/IfModule
[...]

This is for the main site. In addition I only have one virtual host and the
httpd-vhosts.conf looks like this:

NameVirtualHost *:80

VirtualHost 192.168.10.4:80
ServerAdmin webmas...@test.zip
DocumentRoot /usr/local/www/apache22/oldriver.test.zip
ServerName oldriver.test.zip
ServerAlias oldriver.test.zip
ErrorLog /var/log/httpd-error.log
CustomLog /var/log/httpd-access.log common
Directory /usr/local/www/apache22/oldriver.test.zip
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
FCGIWrapper /usr/local/bin/php-cgi .php
Options ExecCGI
DirectoryIndex index.html index.php home.php
   AllowOverride All
Order deny,allow
allow from all
/Directory
/VirtualHost

Your requirements are likely somewhat different from mine, so these configs
work for me but you should only consider them as examples. If any of it may
be useful adjust accordingly. Consider using mod_fcgid instead of FastCGI
because it is newer and more currently under active support. That is, unless
you have some other overriding reason that makes you forced to use FastCGI.

FreeBSD SMP website stale links update?

Hi,

it should perhaps point to

points to an inaccessible http://people.freebsd.org/~jake/smpng.diff
I've been able to track down a copy and have posted it at
http://acm.jhu.edu/~me/smpng.diff ; perhaps it should have a home on

3 August 2000
'Patches with functional heavy-weight thread for i386...' pointed at
http://people.freebsd.org/~grog/patches4.gz , also not accesible;
I've put a copy at http://acm.jhu.edu/~me/patches4.gz ; should this too

How can I make /var/log/custom.log available to him in /usr/local/v/site/logs/?

Does it need a symlink? But will he be able to read the log if it is

You can probably configure your web server to write separate logs for
each site you host. That way, you don't need to expose the entire log
data to each user - each will see only what's relevant to their site.
How you do this depends on the web server you use, of course. You should
also be able to have the log files written to your preferred location.

Assuming you're running apache make the virtualhost directive for the domain
look something like this:

VirtualHost *:80
ServerName domain.com
ServerAlias www.domain.com
DocumentRoot/usr/local/v/site/logs/domain.com/htdocs/
CustomLog /usr/local/v/site/logs/domain.com/logs/access_log

ErrorLog/usr/local/v/site/logs/domain.com/logs/error_log
/VirtualHost

Make the changes to the * if you need to and the domains.

Install Fuse-SSHFS from ports or from Fuse Website Project ?

Hi,

I want to use Fuse-SSHFS http://www.freshports.org/sysutils/fusefs-sshfs/ but

When I go to the website of the project Fuse

Is anyone is using Fuse-SSHFS and which version : the one from ports or from

I haven't found anything on Google.

Thanks.

I made the correction on the development site and did not have any issues. In

there's something amiss with the way the template system is interacting with

Here are my temporary hurdles, I'm still wading through the template system.
The more familiar I get with the layout of that, the faster things seem to go.
And I usually get an hour or so a day to work with it. But, I am plugging away

Re: BSDstats website displaying data incorrectly

2010-05-09 Thread Marc G. Fournier

Just to elaborate on the issue ... it looks like both of those pages are
using different QUERIES to the database ... in the former, it is using a
system view that I was able to update after we fixed the issue with
country reporting, such that it doesn't show records older then that date
... the latter page is pulling the data via a different method (which
Bobby is looking into) so that its actually pulling in older date (ie. a
two months average vs just the past 10 days or so) ...

Both are accurate, just different time periods ...

I made the correction on the development site and did not have any issues. In
fact, I still don't have problems with it at all. On the live site, though,
there's something amiss with the way the template system is interacting with
the database. So, I'm trying to track down the problem.

BSDstats website displaying data incorrectly

2010-05-05 Thread Fbsd1

Why does this page show PCBSD has count of 387
http://www.bsdstats.org/bt/home.html?os=

And this page shows PCBSD has count of 1307
http://www.bsdstats.org/bt/home.html?os=PC-BSD

Why is this? I would think both should show the same value, or you
better add explanation to the web page why the count is different.

And that little selection box on the home page should have some
explanation of its function. Just sticking it there on the right side of
the page above the titles hoping someone will fall into it is not user
friendly.

What is going on with the release stats? What are you showing there?
Is that just for Freebsd? If so then the count is incorrect. This should
be showing the count for each release under each operating system. IE.
what release are in use for freebsd, netbsd, openbsd ect.

Website also needs explanation of the time frame being reported. Are the
values shows as of the the first day of the current month? In general
the website does not explain much of anything about what is being shown.
Put a lot more text describing the overall process and the reporting
cycle. Also think some kind of operating system monthly growth chart
over time is needed. Say going back 3 years to current.

The current website is way to passive in the way things are worded. Try
to inspire people to show their loyalty, allegiance, and devotion by
running the bsdstats client to anonymously report their usage to the
benefit of everyone. Developers donate large amounts of their personal
free time working on the operating systems, the least the users can do
is fulfill their obligation to demonstrate their gratitude to the
developers by running bsdstats. Emphasize the reporting is anonymously.
Website needs to promote it self more. Get on the home page of all the
different BSD systems. Try to become a default part of the BSD systems
basic release. Like PCbsd does. Not option to go get it and turn it on,
but all ready there with option to turn off if desired. This is only
self promotion of the individual operating systems and should be
something they should be interested in doing.

As was explained earlier, normal operation looks at the past couple of
months, to deal with cases, where, for instance, someone has it set to
only report on reboot, but not monthly ... due to the countries issue that
you pointed out, I made a slight change while things restabilize so that
it is only showing this month's stats ... I will expand it again as the
old data for countries fades away ...

The descrepancy above is due to the sub-OS pages not using the same DB
query as the upper one, and as I didn't do the web front end, and the
person who did is no longer around, I have to figure out *how* the code he
wrote works, especially for those sub pages (template system, as there is
no /bt/ file system *on* the server ...

As to the rest ... especially the comments about the web site itself ...
feel like stepping into the breach on that one? I have no creative talent
for doing a web page, which is why I recruited someone way back when ...
