I don't know if this will work in FreeBSD as I don't have
anyone in that many gruops.

I did run across this limit in a commercail System V a few years
back.. As I recall I added another line to the group file using
the same group number and that fixed that problem.

It may be worth a try.

This limit is somewhat historical but cannot easily be changed because
this max # is hard-coded into the NFS protocol, which needs to
describe which groups a user belongs to. If you're not using NFS, you
might try changing the declaration of KI_NGROUPS in /usr/src/sys/
user.h and build a new kernel, I believe

Limit on number of groups a user can join

2008-01-15 Thread Andrea Venturoli
Today I added an user to a new group and suddenly he reported he could
not use this server anymore: he could not login via ssh or access Samba
shares.

I tried (as root) "su username" and it failed.
I removed it from that group and everything worked fine again.
I made some tries removing him from other groups and I got to the
conclusion that it works as long as he is in no more than 15 groups, but
breaks when he join the 16th.

Is this an hard limit? Can it be extended? Why this?

 bye & Thanks

Re: attaching a terminal to 'join' another?

2007-08-10 Thread michi

The next-best is to use the /usr/sbin/watch command to attach to an
existing tty and see its screen output. You'll need to rebuild your
kenel and add the "snp" device (or load it as a module).

not necessariliy build new kernel

sudo kldload snp

Yes, very true. I think that's a good point and shouldn't be overlooked.

It`s possible, but he`d better use screen for updating/upgrading, since his
ssh session that initiated the process may die and then the process dies.
With screen the process will continue if his ssh session dies and he would be
able to later reattach to the terminal in question.

I'm rebuilding a system at home, and I'd like to check how the build
is going at a slow time at work sometimes. I can connect to the system
from work (ssh into my main box, and then from there, ssh to the
system I'm working on). I have a terminal opened on that system

Is this possible?

Maybe your looking for screen.

try
man screen

Also sounds like you could do this with watch

man 8 watch

I guess i was a little vauge. sorry.

What you will need to do is run the program screen, (sysutils/screen), on
the macine that you will want to monitor, BEFORE you start your processes.
the man page should be able to tell you how to attach/detach from the screen
session. I use this all the time in much the same manner as you are trying.

The best solution is to install the sysutils/screen port and run your
build process in a window under that. Then you can attach to that
screen session from any number of other logins (at the same time even).
As a side-effect, screen will protect you from accidental terminal
disconnections (if you close your xterm or ssh disconnects on you,
screen will detach the session and it will run headless until you
reattach to it).

The next-best is to use the /usr/sbin/watch command to attach to an
existing tty and see its screen output. You'll need to rebuild your
kenel and add the "snp" device (or load it as a module).

Step 1: Go back in time to before you started the build.

Step 2: Install a utility called "screen" on that machine.

Step 3: Start a screen session, and start your build from within that.

Step 4: Detach from that screen session by typing ^A then pressing D.

Step 5: Reattach to that screen session at any time with `screen -r`.

Sorry about the "go back in time" part. I guess you'll know for next
time.

The program you need is screen(1). http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/
It's in ports: sysutils/screen

I was actually thinking console for that part of the terminology, but
yeah, that's what I want to attach to, the man page didn't tell me how
though.

This seemed relevant:
Output to a virtual console that not currently is on the display is saved
in a buffer that holds a "screenfull" (normally 25) lines. Any output
written to /dev/console (the original console device) is echoed to
 /dev/ttyv0.

However, cat'ing and less'ing the device did nothing, except act as if
it were waiting for input, and none was coming.

I however did find out which screen I'm on using ps -A and grep:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] 12:01:15 (0) /ports/java/diablo-jdk15 > ps -A | grep tty
sjss 0.0 0 0:00.33 0.6 0 00 26343 26339
sshd: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (sshd)
sjss 0.0 0 0:09.61 0.5 0 00 43906 43903
sshd: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (sshd)

So, I want to see what is going on with ttyp0
ttyp0

Thanks,

attaching a terminal to 'join' another?

2007-08-02 Thread Jim Stapleton
Sorry if my question is a bit confusing - I'm not even sure the proper
terminology, so I don't know what the best way to start looking is.

I'm rebuilding a system at home, and I'd like to check how the build
is going at a slow time at work sometimes. I can connect to the system
from work (ssh into my main box, and then from there, ssh to the
system I'm working on). I have a terminal opened on that system
(actually, another ssh session fron the main box), and I'd like to
have my new connection attach to that terminal session, if possible,
so that I can just pick up where I left off, and monitor it from here.
Is this possible?

Sessions
main desktop terminal A [ssh]--> workstation terminal A (where builds
are currently being processed)

work desktop terminal [ssh]--> main destop terminal B [ssh]-->
workstation terminal B

I would like to have workstation terminal B intercept workstation
terminal A, or main desktop terminal B intercept main desktop terminal
A. Can it be done? Where do I start looking, what are the words and
phrases of interest? I tried looking at both the bash and xterm
commands/man page, but they are rather long, and I'd miss what I was
looking for without having a clue in advance.

I'm guessing something like /dev/?tty?? might work, but how do I
figure out which tty to use?

Thank you,

Well, right. I was just being lazy by checking errno, instead of checking the
return value of pthread_*. It wasn't meant to be anything more than a simple
set of tests. I thought that errno was set on errors though, but after reading
the manpage more carefully it turns out that this is not the case.

I'll see if I can fix my checks.

Was the thread created with detach state set PTHREAD_CREATE_DETACHED or
PTHREAD_CREATE_JOINABLE? If it was PTHREAD_CREATE_JOINABLE, has the
thread already been joined?

You should be able to join a thread that was created joinable, only
once.

If you join it again, or join a thread that was created detached, the
results are unspecified in POSIX. There is an error status that may
be returned, but it may do other bad things to your system.

Note that pthread_join doesn't set errno; it returns an error value
directly. I would never expect the system to hang, though the

might. If your application is hanging, make sure that you're not
trying

to call pthread_join from within a signal handler.

That was sure interesting.. is it supposed to error out or was it the

The first thing to do is read up in the FreeBSD Handbook about how
to contribute to the FreeBSD project.

At the same time, sign up for at least this (FreeBSD 'questions') and
the FreeBSd 'announce' mailing lists and others in which you might have
an interest such as FreeBSD bugs and/or FreBSD current. That will put
you in the middle of FreeBSD discussions. There is also one in Russian
that you can contact at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You will get an idea of what problems people are having and have an
opportunity to suggest ways of correcting them on the Email lists.

Then, if you find problems that you can work on, fix them and submit
the fixes vix send-pr. If you show yourself as a reliable contributor,
you may be asked to be a committer at some later time, etc.

Welcome and good luck,

jerry

When a program opens a socket for listening, it requests which groups it
will listen on using an option in setsockopt(), and bind(). When the
program closes the socket or exits, the group is left. The IGMP
Join/Leave messages are only needed if you have multicast capable
routers and are running a multicast routing protocol like PIM and want
messages from other subnets. Any group can be joined that is
broadcasted locally without those messages. If you put your network
card in promiscuous mode, as is done by most packet sniffers, you should
be receiving all locally transmitted packets, including multicast.

If you want other machines on the network to be able to browse this
machine, then domain member is probably what you want. It's all in the
Samba HOWTO at
http://us5.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba3-HOWTO/domain-member.html#domain-member-server.

I'm afraid Samba can only act as a BDC to a _Samba_ PDC, so it looks
like you're out of luck here. This is also in the Samba HOWTO:

Perkillo,

You can do what you propose. You will need to use Samba. The Samba site
is very good with examples. I suggest you start there.

Fine. Samba can authenticate against an existing Windows domain.

No. But it's very common to make a Unix box a PDC using Samba.

Them if is posible, i will need samba software? Any information

www.samba.org?

You cannot have a Samba box act as a BDC for a Windows PDC, but you can join a
domain as a client, and you can read and backup files on network shares if you
like. However, most people would rather use a Unix/FreeBSD system as a
fileserver rather than some Windows box.

Be aware however, from my experience, IRC should be a last resort for
getting help. If you want to hang out and learn some cool stuff,
that's encouraged. But if you begin asking questions that are covered
in the handbook and easily found from google you're liable to get a
negative response. It's best to lurk a while since you're new to irc
to get the feel of things. And trust me, you will learn alot just
listening in.

have a registered nick to join the channel. Register your nick with the

JOIN for FREE ... Learn and Earn

2002-11-25 Thread Charles Cedeno
Hello:

My name is Charles Cedeno. I am now focusing in one online
opportunity.I have tried several of these opportunities full of hype
promising us thousands of dollars every month. I would get all excited and
run to my family and friends with another "Great Money Maker ". It is a
sad fact that many people who are in need of additional income, are being
victimized by these fly by night scam artists.
As a result of trying all these opportunities, I finally found the
company which is true to their words. Not full of hype, but consistently
send me the monthly check. They have given me the best compensation plan
with their high % commission. I didn't have to perform some juggling act
to maintain some 60 to 40% balance in my legs. It is not a pyramid, so
there are no legs. It is not one of those binary compensation plan
failures either. Everyone earns commissions here. They are providing a
real service not the one that simply transfers wealth from the new signups
to the people at the top.
When you join, you will have a team of up line sponsors who will help
you succeed every step of the way. Instead of being left alone, you will
be guided step by step by real people, not those auto responders. Only you
can make your own success together with the help of your sponsors. If you
have 2 to 3 hours a day, you will be able to earn a full income in a few
months. And there is absolutely no limit as to how much you can earn. It
is designed to gain momentum after some time. But I prefer to avoid such
statements as "You will get rich". I read it everywhere and will not allow
myself to sound like them. I experienced it personally, you can be
comfortable.
To get your FREE membership ID, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
put "REGISTER ME FOR FREE" in the subject and your full name in the body
of your email. Also include the statement below in the body of your email.
"By submitting a request for a FREE DHS Club membership I agree to receive
emails from DHS Club for both their Consumer and Business Opportunities."
I will then register you into the system. You will receive a confirmation
email asking you to verify. Open it up and activate your free membership
immediately. Then set back and watch as your new business explodes.

Best regards,

Charles Cedeno
