Handbrake maintainership was dropped a few days
ago. I spent a couple of minutes trying to update it,
but I ended up reading jam manual and wondering
why somebody wants to use it over make.

You can have a look at the Porter's Handbook and
see if you can take maintainership.

When I go to the URL, I find that the only version available is 0.7.1,
which was apparently released 2/24/2006. The earlier version is
probably available through some sort of source control, but I wasn't
smart enough to figure out what/where/how.

Being new to FreeBSD, I don't know the proper procedure in this case.

Should I report this to someone? Or is taken care of in some other
way? Or is this the wrong forum?

Can I just manually edit the port Makefile and distinfo file to have the
correct version/size/MD5 etc? Or is this too simplistic a fix that will
screw up other things?

The size of the file to be downloaded does not match the size in
distfile. To get around this all you need do is:

rm /usr/ports/multimedia/mplayer-skins/distfile

This will prevent the size from being checked, it is a serious security
issue but if you really want the file

I had *exactly* the same problems problems.I get the advise
to manually put everything in /usr/ports/distfiles/mplayer-skins.
Also installing xine from ports gave similar problems.
How is manually putting the files in place going to work
when the directories are auto cleaned?
I had to open a 2nd root term and cp-ing the files into
place while the portupgrade while busy (after autoclean).
Would be nice if there was an option with an argument
that would stop auto cleansing the directory where you
manually add some files in the first place.

There's a problem with all/most skins size mismatch

Don't know why noone wants to fix this.
You can skip the checksum/size tests by setting
  setenv NO_CHECKSUM yes

I have had this issue on my system... I'm not quite sure what the real
issue is (can't fetch simply replace the file, or is it some other
issue?) but I have solved it anyway by simply removing the old files
before building:

rm -rf /usr/ports/distfiles/mplayer

There's a problem with all/most skins size mismatch
in this port; I complained already, to no avail.
Don't know why noone wants to fix this.

You can skip the checksum/size tests by setting

  setenv NO_CHECKSUM yes

(see man ports) and then try installing mplayer again.

I saw this happen when I started to install ports. Some ports
that had deep dependency lists _somehow_ caused Make to go into
an infinite loop in the configure target.

I worked around it by cleaning up everything (removing the
files beginning with `.' that are used to indicate that stages
are done, as well as the work/ directories), then doing some
of the lower-level ports individually before the upper-level ones.

This is not to say that some ports don't have long compiles, but
if you are seeing the same output over and over, especially if it
looks like lots of short compilations and some messages about what
facilities are available, you may be hitting this problem.

Please let me know if this helps.

Nope. I'd say that something has quite clearly gone wrong there.

You can kill the compilation using 'Ctrl-C' (maybe required several
times) -- that's the usual was to kill any misbehaving process under
Unix.
Before re-trying the compilation, cvsup(1) the latest version of the
ports to pick up any fixes that may have gone into the tree in the
mean time.

Thank you very much...I tried Ctrl-C and with just one try it stopped
and said "You have Mail."
I do not know what happened...I do not use CVSup because I can
not...with the networking configurations that we have in the office...I
have been dowloading CTM deltas...I will try to ctm today...and use
portsdb -Uu to update my ports...
Again, Thank you very much...

vlc installation in /usr/ports/multimedia take too long...

2003-11-04 Thread Rommel B. IKEDA
Hi,

I was jsut wondering...How LONG does it take for the
"/usr/ports/multimedia/vlc" take to get it installed?

I made a "make install clean" on the afternoon November 1st and since it
did not finished immediately I had to leave my PC on until Today,
November 4th...The last time I installed OpenOffice from Ports, it did
not took me 24 Hours to successfully compile it...but "vlc" has not
stopped yet...Looking at the output, it seems that it is displaying the
same outputs (although I could not verify it 100%, because it is
displaying quite fast)...

Is it normal for a Port to be compiled for 3-4 days? I was just wondering?
I would really appreciate if anyone can help me how to verify that my
machine is indeed compiling the right way or it is just going in a loop...
What if I would kill it...what would happen? Can I start
again...compile from the Ports and encounter no problems?...Oh...by the
way, I am a Newbie...I do not know how to properly Kill it...

Thank for any help in advance...

If that wont work, try to get ports-all and define a refuse file

No it's not. That will not help the 'ports-multimedia' issue, and it
won't even pull any files at all. With tag=. and checking out ports-all,
I get the multimedia categories just fine. From multiple cvsup servers.
