FreeBsd : Abit AV-20 Unichrome XFree

2005-05-04 Thread nospamme_vizion

I am returning to FreeBsd after an absense of years nd find myself trying
to remember how to ride this bike with all its new bells whistles.

I have an Abit AV-20 M/B that has an integrated Unichrome Pro Graphics
with 2D/3D video controller. I am trying to install XFree onto FreeBSD 5.3
and am having trouble getting X11R6.4.5. to work. It seems I need a driver
and noticed that in a discussion on the topic:
FreeBSD 5.3 NVIDIA-1.0.7174 GLX extension problem
Twas said by Randy Dawson:
-
The new driver (March 31, 2005 release:
 NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86-1.0-7174.tar.gz)
downloaded from Nvidia's site works great in 5.3.
you have to sysinstall and install the kernel sources for its make to
 work,
or you will get this error:
 cant find:
 /usr/share/mk/bsd.kmod.mk
Remember to update your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change the driver nv to
 nvidia
--
I wondered if there is a similar driver for the Unichrome. Also some more
detailed instructions for the sequence of commands needed to successfully
add new drivers and carry out the sysinstall would be much appreciated.

Thanks
David

how to update XFree libs?

2004-09-20 Thread Matthias F. Brandstetter
Hi all,

today I noticed a security issue with XFree86 libs in my daily sec. mailing
from one of my servers, so I updated my ports collection via
cvsup /root/ports-supfile (ports-all). But after that, I still can't
update my X libs:

[ 11:59 [EMAIL PROTECTED] XFree86-4-libraries ] make install clean
===  XFree86-libraries-4.4.0_1 has known vulnerabilities:
 xpm --- image decoding vulnerabilities.
   Reference:
http://people.freebsd.org/~eik/portaudit/ef253f8b-0727-11d9-b45d-000c41e2cdad.html
Please update your ports tree and try again.
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/ports/x11/XFree86-4-libraries.

Any ideas how to solve this?
Greetings and TIA, Matthias

Xfree Nvidia, Panic

2004-07-17 Thread Glyn Tebbutt
Hi all
I've finally got a basic freebsd system up and running *my faults not
freebsd's* but im having a bugger of a time getting X to work. Well
working with GL.
I have just today updated my src, made a new world and custom kernel,
all working fine.
For X, when i have it setup as nv, X works fine, but no GL. When i
have it as nvidia my system hangs, no error messages system hangs for
about 30seconds and then restarts.
I have been following this
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-questions/2004-January/031044.html and
tried both methods, with nvidiaagp and freebsdagp, but i get the same results.
i disabled acpi but again same results.
the only things i havent done is recompile Xfree, from which if iam
going to do this id rather swap to xorg *as ive never tried this*

sys spec
p4 2ghz, 512mb, dvdcdrw, ti4200 128mb, maxtor 40gb hdd freebsd 5.2.1
relese_5_2

If i have posted this in the wrong list, please let me know and ill send
elsewhere
Thanks for any replies

XFree and VIA chipset

2004-06-15 Thread junkmail
I am trying to set up a windows manager on a EPIA Mini-ITX M6000
board without any success.

From the manual:
Chipset CLE266/VT8235 Graphics: VIA Castlerock AGP

From dmesg.boot:
agp0: VIA Generic host to PCI bridge mem
0xd000-0xd7ff at device 0.0 on pci0
pci1: display, VGA at device 0.0 (no driver
attached)
vga0: Generic ISA VGA at port 0x3c0-0x3df iomem
0xa-0xb on isa0

http://www.xfree.org/current/via.4.html indicates
that the via driver should support the CLE266
chipset, but the via driver does not seem to be
available for FreeBSD?

Any hope?

The via driver is available only from XFree86 4.4 (or in the x.org
release.) The XFree86 port in FreeBSD has not yet been updated to 4.4,
and the x.org ports are not quite finished yet.
In other words: No, the via driver is not available yet, but once the
X ports have been updated to the latest release it should work.

Problems with applications menu fonts (XFree 4.3)

2004-03-27 Thread Paulo Fragoso
Hi,

We don't know the correct mailing list to post this problem, we are
sending now to this one.

We was using FreeBSD 4.9, XFree86-4.3.0, mozilla-gtk2-1.4 and others
packages installed from cd, all was working fine. We dicided to upgrade
our browser to mozilla 1.6, so we synchronized our ports by cvsup and we
have used portupgrade to do easy upgrade:

portupgrade -Rv mozilla-gtk2-1.4

Now we get big (ugly) menu fonts (see
http://www.nlink.com.br/~paulo/mozilla-menu.png).

What is this problem? After this upgrade all new apllications (like
OpenOffice) show ugly fonts in its menus.

Those packages below was modified after mozilla upgrade:

unix{paulo}:/var/db/pkg:27$ find . -name '*' -type d -newer
quanta-3.1.4,2/+CONTENTS
.
./expat-1.95.7
./png-1.2.5_3
./pkgconfig-0.15.0_1
./imake-4.3.0_2
./freetype2-2.1.7_2
./fontconfig-2.2.2,1
./XFree86-libraries-4.3.0_6
./XFree86-fontEncodings-4.3.0
./XFree86-fontScalable-4.3.0
./libXft-2.1.6
./jpeg-6b_2
./tiff-3.6.1_1
./libiconv-1.9.1_3
./atk-1.4.1_2
./libmng-1.0.6
./lcms-1.09_1,1
./gettext-0.13.1_1
./gtk-2.2.4_2
./nspr-4.4.1_1
./glib-2.2.3_1
./pango-1.2.5_2
./mozilla-1.6_3,2
./libIDL-0.8.3_1

Are there any problem with X related fonts in the ports?

Thanks,
Paulo.

XDMCP and starting XFree on boot

2004-01-26 Thread Benjamin Walkenhorst
Hello everybody,

I am currently trying to set up an XDMCP-remote-login. I have two
machines at home, but only one screen, so I want to be able to log into
both machines via xdm.

So far I've set up the headless machine to run xdm and added
*  CHOOSER BROADCAST
to Xacces on that machine. It works.

Now I want the desktop machine (the one that's running the X-Server) to
a) start xdm on boot (but without starting XFree) and
b) then start XFree an request a CHOOSER from the headless machine.

Both steps work fine, when done manually.
But so far I've been unable to start both on boot. I've added the
following lines to /etc/rc.conf.local:

---
/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm

/usr/X11R6/bin/X -indirect 192.168.0.1
---

When the system boots, I get an error message like
/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm: command not found.
Then X starts up, I get the CHOOSER, and my local machine is even listed
- but when I want to log in on my local machine, all I get is an empty
screen.
When I want to log into the remote machine, I get a login-screen, but
apparently the keyboard does not react. I cannot even switch to console,
the only keys that work are Ctrl+Alt+Del...

The first part's probably easy: rc.conf.local is probably being run
before /usr is mounted. This explains why I can't login to the local
machine.
But then... why is XFree fired up? I even get the CHOOSER, so it's even
run correctly... And in that case, xdm should work, too. Except for the
case that /usr was being mounted *while* rc.conf.local is being run -
which I find hard to believe.
I'm really confused here... =)

I thought of writing rc-scripts for both services so they are started in
proper order...
Are there solutions involving less work?

Thank you very much,

Benjamin

XFree zooming funkiness...

2003-07-29 Thread Peter Losher
So, I finally have X11 running on this Dell Inspiron 5100, and all was
running well (well, except getting the webfonts to show up right) for the
initial 48 hours until yesterday. Now when I start X up, all keyboard
input scrolls the screens thru 4 zoom levels. Has anyone seen this, and
if so, how did you fix it. X is basically unusable in this state.

Attached is my current XF86Config. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Best Wishes - Peter

TV-Out refuses to work after XFree upgrade from 4.2.0 to 4.3.0

2003-06-20 Thread Frank Altpeter

[please CC me on responses since i'm not subscribed]

hi there,

I'm not sure on which freebsd topic this is best related, so i first
try it with freebsd-questions - please apologise if mistaken...

I'm running FreeBSD 4.8-STABLE on a Compaq Armade E500 notebook,
which is using a 'ATI RAGE P/M Mobility AGP 2x' graphics accelerator.

Yesterday i updated from XFree-4.2.0 to XFree-4.3.0, and since then,
the TV-OUT refuses to work anymore under X.

I installed 4.3.0 from the ports via portupgrade and installed the
corresponding ATI package as mentioned on
http://gatos.sourceforge.net/ati.2.php

Before, i was able to switch between display and TV-OUT with a
special function key, in case there is a TV connected on the chinch
connector. This worked in both text console and X desktop.

After the XFree update, it only works in text console mode, and the
function key doesn't switch to the TV-OUT anymore when displaying
the X session. So i'm quite sure that there's no hardware but an X
server problem ...

Any hints very appreciated...

With kind regards,

Frank Altpeter

Dead keys on Toshiba laptop - 4.8-STABLE - XFree 4.3

2003-06-09 Thread Florian Ponroy
Hello,

I've recently installed FreeBSD on my laptop, fetched the kernel sources
to upgrade from 4.8-RELEASE to 4.8-STABLE, and now i'm trying to make
these dead-keys working under XFree :)

Well, it doesn't work at all. 8 bits caracters are perfectly supported
by the terminal (aterm), since i can see them if i switch to a french
keyboard mapping. Usually i use a dvorak keyboard mapping.

Although i've used xmodmap to set up Mode_switch or Multi_key keys, i
still can't get dead-keys working.

Here is my XF86Config file:

Section InputDevice
Identifier Keyboard0
Driver keyboard
option xkbRules xfree86
Option XkbModel pc105
Option XkbLayout dvorak
Option XkbOptions ctrl:swapcaps
EndSection

For example, i've checked the keycode of the right alt key with xev, and
bound it to Multi_key, but without any success. Or bounding a
'dead_grave dead_circumflex' to another key didn't work either.

That's weird, it's the first time i can't make these dead-keys working.
Could it be a laptop issue? (Toshiba Satellite 3000).

Thanks in advance,

Florian Ponroy.

Ok, i've found it. It's my Aterm which is sucky. Gotta recompile it! At
least, the 4.8 packaged version doesn't handle dead keys.

Sorry folks, i didn't search enough :)

 hi,

I migrated recently to stable. Now trying to launch XFree with startx on
a non root account results in an error message recommending to setuid
server root, but how? Is there another way of obtaining access (except

Try removing/reinstalling wrapper, although if X starts at all that
probably isn't the issue. What's in ~/.xinitrc?

xfree question not answered on the xfree lists, maybe here?

2002-10-24 Thread Chip Wiegand
I put this on chat becuase it's a bit off topic, and it has yet to be
answered on the xfree lists. I just installed fbsd 4.7 on a new box, at
the prompt to configure the x server said no, and finished the install.
I then ran XFree86 -configure and copied the XFree86Config to /etc/X11/.
When I start X it starts okay except it will only run in 4 bit mode.
Even when I try to force it to 16 bit at the startx prompt, it will
default to 4. I tried to comment out the 4bit subsection the XFree will
only complain that it's not there and fail to load. I know the video
card and monitor will do 16 bit and 1024x768, it was on the previous
install, and the box dual-boots win2000, which is using that config. I
noticed there are no lines for modes in the screens subsections, so I
added one to the 16bit subsection, it only breaks X again. I've included
the XFree86Config at the bottom of this message.
Hopefully someone will be able to help me here. :)
Regards,
Chip W

 Hi Chip,
I had a very similar problem on a rather simplistic mother board that had a

just try diffrent configurations for the Screen section:
For instance, try a different depth, like 8 with 1024x768 and 800x600 .
My card is supposed to go to 1600x1200 at 24bits but just does not do it -
I think it has to do with the memory you have for the video. Oddly, mine
started working when I configured Depth 8 and Depth 16 to Modes 1280x1024
  1024x768
 HTH,

 Chip W

I'm not sure, but you migth be referencing a thread I did start. I was
using such video card on an Compaq iPaq (desktop). It really is not that
difficult to make it work, just RTFM make it. That is not the problem.
The problem is that the chip is buggy and seems like X developers did
not find how to workaround it 100%. My X kept crashing twice or more a
day and then I found the final solution:

another machine with another video card.

But make it work and test anyway, perhaps you success using it without
crashes, must test. Look for its docs (locate i810) on your filesystem
and follow it.

PJ,

What changes did you have to make? I also have the

The problem, basically, was to find the right configuration.
They say just the defaults should work... heh, heh, heh if only they
always worked.. :))
I cannot give you the exact stuff to enter, but if you go to the manual on
the FreeBSD.org site,
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-config.html
that should give you some help.
Then you may have to play with the Depth and mode configuration.
I tried with the graphical set up tool and it is quite ok if you can figure
it out. Otherwise the other two command-line tools work just fine. Be sure
you know what your horizontal and veritcal frequencies are and what modes
your mo;nitor can handle.
When you start X, generally there is a bunch of info on the screen if it
crashes that can give you some idea of what may be wrong.
I'm no expert at this by any means but I have found that if you persist
with different configurations, something will usually work and give you an
idea of what and where you should go. Usually the answer is there, my
problem has always been to see the forest for the trees or the other way
around
I must add that even with all the problems I have had setting up my system,
once you understand the basics, nothing beats FreeBSD - it really is easy
to use the cvsup, the make world for updating, and especially the
portupgrade utility.
Let me know if this helps and if not, you'll have to give more detail as to
what is going on on your machine.

NOt sure if that will help but I got my laptop (Sony Viao R505el series)
to work with the altest cvs of XFree86 and some kernel patches. I've got
a howto from my web page. See if that works... it may.

Good luck.

Installing XFree and gnome

2002-10-16 Thread Rafter Man

Hey Subcribers

I have installed FreeBSD 4.7 on my com (mini installation) and now want to install X
window and Gnome. So I run /stand/sysinstall and chose:
Configure/Desktop/Gnome + sawfish and it starts downloading, but here comes the
problem. It downloads alot, things I haven't neven asked for like:
Anjuta
Glimmer
Gimp
and so on.
Why is it installing all that and how can I stop it?

By the way, I am not on the list, so please CC to me.

Best regards

Amongst the basic X libs and GNOME support, you're also getting the
gnome-fifth-toe meta-port, which installs a whole slew of useful apps -
depending upon your definition of useful.

If you wish to avoid installing all these, you can go navigate through
the package tree and install x11/gnome. that is also a meta-port, but it
only installs the basic stuff necessary for a gnome desktop. X will get
installed automatically, but you'll need to install sawfish yourself.

If you install the x11/gnome2 port, you get sawfish with it no
additional charge.

Or you could just let it install all the other apps and then delete them
when it's finished ::)

  thanks for the help,

You should be installing XFree86-4.2.1. It has several security fixes.

V4 of XFree86 no longer uses the XF86Setup program to generate the
configuration. The preferred way to generate simple configurations is
run the server with the -configure option. See 'man XFree86' for more
details. Then read 'man XF86Config' for documentation on the
 configuration file details.

The file generated will be /etc/X11/XF86Config and may be edited for
more complex configurations such as multiple screens and non-default
 color depths and resolutions.
