CFT: PetiteCloud's support for Linux running under bhyve

2014-01-30 Thread Dee Nixon
First of all what's new in 0.2.3:

* Full support for Linux as a guest on the “bhyve-linux” hypervisor

* Fixed all build system bugs we know of

* PetiteCloud.org has made a link to -virtualization@ as our
preferred support channel

* The screen shots on PetiteCloud.org have been added to,
reorganized, and more focus given to what instances can do instead
of just making them. Note the DevStack screenshots form the core
of a forthcoming tutorial series on getting OpenStack up and running
under PetiteCloud as a way of learning OpenStack and as a study aid
for OpenStack certification.

What we need tested (see known bugs for a list of issues we already
know about):

* Which Linux distributions (if any) fail to install?

* Do all commands work in all cases?

Stuff that we would like to know if anyone is willing to help with:

* Making it so a Linux guest can start on boot (i.e. start headless)

* Making sure that more OpenStack components than just DevStack do
in fact run on PetiteCloud correctly

If you are a current user, please note that we will be changing file
formats during the next few tertiary versions. (The new file format
will not change, though it will eventually be just one of several
standard formats to be supported in the long term. On the other
hand, the current file format will be phased out.)

RFC: Changes to handbook on virtualization

2013-10-10 Thread Dee Nixon
A few weeks ago we volunteered to add some new material, primarily
about bhyve, to the section on virtualiation in the FreeBSD
handbook. You can see our nearly-final draft (pending any comments
from the list, and pending the repair of VirtualBox so it can work
with FreeBSD 10) at:

http://www.petitecloud.org/handbook.jsp

We would appreciate comments, especially any corrections or
suggested clarifications regarding bhyve.

Re: CFT: petitecloud 0.1.7

Aryeh forgot to include the URL where you can download it:

 Whats new:

 * Type and amount of information displayed on instance
listing of web UI has been simplified to be more user-friendly.
For each guest instance, the web UI now displays only a name,
cpu count, RAM and disk space. All values that have been
hidden (such as network interface) are now autoassigned by
 petitecloud.

 * It is now physically impossible to enter incorrect data
when creating instances. All resource limits are enforced
 passively by constraining pull-down values.

 * Prefered disk location and prefered install cd location
are now on the settings panel.

 NOTE: The old /usr/local/etc/petitecloud/settings and
 /usr/local/etc/petitecloud/instances are incompatible with 0.1.7.
It is recommended you remake any instances to reflect this fact.

CFT: PetiteCloud 0.1.3

2013-09-26 Thread Dee Nixon
Version 0.1.3 of PetiteCloud (a front end for bhyve) has been
released. We would very much appreciate feedback from anyone
inclined to test it.

PetiteCloud can be downloaded (as a FreeBSD port) from
http://petitecloud.org/port-0.1.3.tar.gz .

New Features:

* All startup initializations (including loading kernel modules and
ifconfig's) are now 100% internal. Only one line needs to be added
manually to /etc/rc.conf to start petitecloud at boot time.
bootloader.conf needs no modification.
* Setting screen added (password and bridged interface are the two
current settings available)

Bug Fixes:

* Fixed wrong assignment of tap on startup
* Fixed need for double password entry

Instructions can be found in the README file.

The user interface is still usable only by experienced sysadmins.
(For example, you need to know what a network interface is.)
Future versions of PetiteCloud will hide some of these details,
making PetiteCloud more accessible to a wider range of users, and
will have better input validation, etc.

Re: bhyve and AMD

Yes, nRIP is required and it will be hard to find AMD processor with

I'm sorry to have to ask this, but what is nRIP? (I tried Googling
nRIP virtualization and similar strings but turned up nothing
relevant. The closest I could find was a few mentions of RIP,
apparently meaning Instruction Pointer Register or relative
instruction pointer.)
