Follow-up Comment #6, bug #25430 (project freeciv):

cazfi says on IRC "Hmm.. is it really possible to build freeciv without iconv?
[...] Confirmed that lack of iconv is an hard error configure time."

Hence, not announcing this in release notes. I assume iconv was
sort-of-half-available in the original situation, or something.

[Freeciv-Dev] 2.5.7 release plan; one string change

2017-05-01 Thread Jacob Nevins
(Cross-posted to gna.org and freelists.org lists; follow-ups will only
be to freelists.org. If you have not subscribed to the new lists yet, I
recommend you do so.)

We're planning a 2.5.7 release soon, possibly as soon as next weekend
(6-7 May).

The main aim of this release is to replace URLs and email addresses in
the tarball to reflect the gna.org closure. There are some bugfixes
since 2.5.6, but frankly not that many. Work-in-progress NEWS is at
.

If gna.org shuts down before we get the release out (I haven't managed
to get any timeline out of the Gna people), the release will almost
certainly be delayed, as we'll need to get the new code repository in
place (I'm still working on this) and update our release procedures.

Translators: there has been a single string change on S2_5, breaking the
longstanding S2_5 string freeze, since @gna.org was mentioned in a
translatable string.

Before:

#: data/helpdata.txt:2307
msgid ""
"freeciv-dev@gna.org - public development mailing\n"
" list (archives are public)\n"
"freeciv-maintain...@gna.org - private project administration\n"
" list (for security issues, etc)"

After:

#: data/helpdata.txt:2307
msgid ""
"freeciv-...@freelists.org - public development mailing\n"
" list (archives are public)\n"
"freeciv-maintain...@lists.sourceforge.net\n"
"- private project administration\n"
" list (for security issues, etc)"

Since this only touches email addresses, and thus doesn't require
language knowledge, I will likely directly update all .po files where
this string wasn't fuzzy, so if you do nothing, there will not be a new
fuzzy due to this change. (...there aren't languages that inflect for
domain name, are there? :)
Let me know if you'd rather I *didn't* do this to your .po file.

.po files have been updated at their new location:

and we can also accept updates in the usual way.

[Freeciv-Dev] gna.org (Freeciv code and mailing list host) is shutting down

2017-04-16 Thread Jacob Nevins
gna.org, which hosts much of Freeciv's project infrastructure
(including this freeciv-announce mailing list), is expected to shut
down soon[1].

The Freeciv project will continue, and we're currently making
alternative arrangements. Downloads are already moved, and freeciv.org
infrastructure such as the website and metaserver are unaffected, so
players should not be affected much.

However, we do expect some interruption to our project/development
infrastructure used by contributors (code version control, ticket
tracking, and mailing lists); migration is in progress as time permits,
but there's a good chance that we won't have finished before gna.org
goes away. However, all important project data is already backed up, so
any hiatus should be temporary. (We are taking this opportunity to
migrate version control from Subversion to Git.)

Why I'm sending this email: we may not be able to transfer mailing list
subscription details, so you might need to re-subscribe to
freeciv-announce and other lists. We haven't finalised our new mailing
list arrangements yet, so there isn't any action you can take now (I'm
only sending this mail now in case I don't get another chance). If we do
so before Gna finally shuts down, we'll send one last email to this
freeciv-announce list with the details; if you don't hear from us again,
check our website <http://www.freeciv.org/>.

Thanks to Gna for hosting us trouble-free for nearly 12 years.

On behalf of the Freeciv maintainers,
  Jacob Nevins

[1] <https://gna.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=2545>; the shutdown
timeline isn't entirely clear, but it looks like it might be around the
end of April.

PS: if you are a veteran Freeciv admin or developer from the CVS era
(2005 or before), and are happy to answer some questions, please get in
touch with me personally or email freeciv-dev@gna.org; you may be able
to help with the quality of the Git history conversion.

PPS: if you host or care about another project hosted on Gna, and want
help rescuing its data, feel free to contact me personally; I may be
able to help.

Also, the ChangeLog file on the S2_0 branch has a lot of this sort of
information from the CVS era (1998-2005), so I'll also be using that

[Freeciv-Dev] Git migration; contributor details needed

2017-04-01 Thread Jacob Nevins
With Gna shutting down, we intend to migrate the official source
repository from Subversion to Git. (Currently we expect to host the
result on Github.)

I'm just getting started on this conversion (offline), but one thing
that will be needed is full committer details of the form
  Jacob Nevins <0jacobnk@chiark.greenend.org.uk>
for every commit, where currently we just have local usernames like
'jtn'. Once we have published an official git history, these details
will be essentially unchangeable for existing commits.

If you have a preference as to how your commits will appear, please let
me know, including your svn/CVS user ID. (If you send me a preference
you'll probably save me time.)

By default I will make some effort to track down real names and current
public email addresses, starting with the most prolific contributors and
probably stopping when I run out of time.

I will use Gna real names where available, but I will not use your
registered Gna email address if it's not public on Gna, unless I'm
reasonably convinced it is otherwise a public email address for you.
I'll also be using <http://www.freeciv.org/wiki/People> as a resource.

For anyone I can't track down (or if I run out of time) I expect I'll
use @freeciv.org (email to which will in most cases
bounce; I don't intend to set up forwarding in the first instance).

I don't currently intend to go through the history and populate separate
author/committer fields correctly (except perhaps for the very early CVS
history which was all committed by a user called 'freeciv'), so above
I'm talking only about people who've actually committed to CVS or SVN.

I've attached a list of distinct usernames found in the repository as of
r35175, sorted alphabetically.

=-=-=-=-=-

I intend to use the reposurgeon tool, and broadly follow the method of
<http://www.catb.org/~esr/reposurgeon/dvcs-migration-guide.html>,
although not slavishly (for instance I'm not going to rewrite commit
messages to have git-ish summaries, and I'd like to preserve svn
revision information).

I hope to put candidate histories up somewhere for review as they become
available. I'm aiming to be done by the end of April, because that is
the best guess we have about when Gna will shut down.

At some point I'll have to declare svn.gna.org closed to further commits
to enable the final migration; probably there will be a period where
committing new code will not be possible.

=-=-=-=-=-

Help wanted:

 - Do you know of pre-2006 mailing list archives (complete or partial)?
(From when the mailing lists were @freeciv.org, hosted by
   complete.org.)
gmane.org had them, but is not currently reliable.

 - Do you know anything about the CVS->Subversion migration?
Various evidence points to it happening 2005-10-11 and being done
   with 'cvs2svn'.
If the pre-migration CVS repository (pile of ,v files) is preserved
somewhere (even partially) that would be useful.
(So that I can take the opportunity to investigate and rectify any
history mangling during this conversion; everyone I know of who's
done a svn->git migration says they found history badness from a
previous CVS->svn migration. But this will not block the migration if
   it doesn't turn up.)

 * We found out a couple of days ago. It was posted on gna.org front
page on 31 Jan; previously mentioned in Nov on a mailing list (that
apparently none of us were subscribed to, oops):

 * We're still considering where to migrate to; it's being discussed on
the project admin list. I think it likely that we will move from svn
to git, although we reserve the option of sticking with svn for now.
Nothing else is decided. (The ticket history and tracker makes this a
less straightforward decision than you might think.)

 * We've got a few months yet. (Gna admins were not very clear on
timeline when I asked them on Friday, but say there will be further
   announcements)

 * I have backups of much of the material on Gna (including svn and some
ticket history), and will work to maintain them in case it disappears
unexpectedly soon. (I've also alerted archiveteam.org and they are
doing their usual thing, although we should not rely on that)

Don't panic.

This prevents compilation on my system (Qt 5.2.1). I guess that on some other
systems, it gets pulled in by some other header.

Following the style of patch #8083, this patch adds a forward declaration
rather than #include'ing . Hope that's the right thing.

Will commit immediately as emergency fix for failure to compile.

However, there's an existing string "Could not open %s for writing" in

(The handwritten unit help could do with rewriting to refer to the action UI
names, and to acknowledge this UI behaviour if we keep it.)

As of bug #25341, the minimum version of Qt5 required is 5.2, because of
QWheelEvent::phase  (a recent
addition, and a dependency we could probably get rid of fairly easily as
mentioned in that bug).

I don't know whether we need any other 5.2 stuff (I've been on 5.2.1 for a
while).

We haven't documented a minimum Qt5 version, and we don't check for one at
configure time.

This bug is to decide a minimum version and make sure we can compile with it.
Absolute minimum work would be to simply document that we require 5.2.

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #25341] Qt client doesn't build with Qt <5.5

2016-11-26 Thread Jacob Nevins
Update of bug #25341 (project freeciv):

Status: In Progress => Ready For Test

___

Follow-up Comment #1:

Attached a minimal patch which removes the 'source' argument from QWheelEvent
constructors, restoring ability to compile with Qt 5.2(.1).

The Qt client itself doesn't seem to use the 'source' information, but maybe
it passes the events on to built-in widgets which do. So the result might be
slightly wrong for new Qt installations.

There's probably a better solution that involves copying and modifying the
object rather than constructing a new one. This would be less
version-dependent (for instance there's an 'inverted' property added in 5.7,
and we still use 'phase' which imposes a minimum of 5.2).

If anyone has a better patch, feel free to take over this ticket. Otherwise
I'll be committing this one soon, as the issue is in my way.

* Using vision tool in editor doesn't update minimap

Seen in current (2.5.6) S2_5, and I've freshly confirmed it goes back at least
as far back as 2.5.1.

Moving the Gtk clients' minimap away from a fixed-size canvas whose scale the

[Freeciv-Dev] 2.5.6 release planned for this weekend

2016-11-14 Thread Jacob Nevins
I plan to release 2.5.6 this coming weekend (19-20 Nov, probably 19th).
This release mainly targets the upcoming Debian freeze.

There have been no string changes since 2.5.5, so there's no string
freeze period. Translation updates are always welcome, of course.

Draft release notes so far are at .

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #25259] autoattack: a transport will attack before its cargo

2016-11-13 Thread Jacob Nevins
Follow-up Comment #8, bug #25259 (project freeciv):

>> Won't this make cargo (greater unit_transport_depth()) sort later in the
list (and hence be used last), not earlier?

*thinks about it some more* You're right. Sorry for the noise.

> Want to optimize the sorting of the attacker list your self or should I?
I've done it => patch #7985.

___

Details:

From my comment in bug #25259:
> A simple optimisation for speed would be to only call unit_transport_depth()
once on each unit.
> Another fiddlier saving (that may not be worth the hassle) would be to
iterate over both transporter stacks in parallel, and bail out when the top of
either one is hit; this saves iterations in the common case where cargo is
compared against non-cargo. Otherwise, if there's a deep nested transport
stack in a stack, we walk its list ~(n log n) times for every defender that
stack could attack.

I haven't measured the improvement (if any), only tested that it doesn't cause
regressions.

Noticed looking at bug #25085:

The SDL clients treat the return value from pplayer_can_cancel_treaty() as a
boolean (in popup_diplomacy_dialog()), but it's actually an enum, and not one
such that a nonzero return implies ability to cancel.

I think (but haven't tested) that this will prevent treaty cancellation except
when it's illegal; the only time it'll behave as intended is if a senate
blocks treaty cancellation (in which case we present a button, to consult the
server). But this seems like a rather major bug to have gone undetected, so
maybe I've misread it.

(The comments for pplayer_can_cancel_treaty() itself also incorrectly imply
that it returns a bool.)

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #25165] FREECIV_OPT not documented in freeciv-client(6) man page

2016-10-11 Thread Jacob Nevins
Update of bug #25165 (project freeciv):

 Assigned to:None => jtn

Follow-up Comment #2:

I was hoping it existed when I went looking to see if it existed, and found it
useful (for testing clean install without disturbing my real dotfiles).

Since it's there, we may as well document it. I'll probably get round to it.

[Freeciv-Dev] [patch #3339] ConnectLand road flag

2016-10-09 Thread Jacob Nevins
Follow-up Comment #2, patch #3339 (project freeciv):

When I've tried this (on recent trunk), if a single road is next to land with
no other nearby tiles having the road, both the connecting sprite and the
isolated sprite are drawn.

Is the drawing of the isolated sprite in this case deliberate?
