The other way round - you need TCP/IP to have a network file system
client like SMB/CIFS. And because a client like Samba would be TSR,
you are right that it would be nice if other clients could re-use
the TCP/IP stack as long as it is in RAM anyway. Yet I still think
that Wattcp is a nice / widespread implementation, maybe it could
be extended to do that re-use thing to save some RAM. I would not
try to save disk space, though: People who run, say, LYNX for DOS
should not be forced to load Samba to make their Lynx work, so I
would still keep the full Wattcp stack in the Lynx binary...

A SMB/CIFS client would be very nice, it would be nice if it provided
some sort of standard TCP/IP implementation also ... the question is
who's.

You have the following that I can think of that are documented..
1. Trumpet TCP for DOS.
2. Novell LAN Workplace for DOS
3. FTP software's PC/TCP

There is also WATTCP, but that's linked directly to the application and
does not work as a TSR like the above.

I talked to the somebody at Performance Technologies about releasing the
code for the POWERLan product a while back, but did not get very far in
the effort.

Paul

Re: [Freedos-devel] Brasilian keyboard driver for Blocek

2007-10-21 Thread Ladislav Lacina
Thanks Henrique!
I'll be happy if you help me. Relatively comfortable way how to edit TBL
files could be a hexadecimal editor. Or you can try a utility MK_TABLE.C
from DOSLFN package. In this package is also a TBL.TXT file which describes
the TBL file format. Note that only subtype 1 is used in Blocek now. (In
next version will be used a 0 subtype as well)

Hi Ladislav,

yes, I could test Blocek with the brazilian layout. I must tell you
though that brazilian keyboards are not meant to work with cp860.
According to MS-DOS standards, our keyboard is meant to work with cp850
(i.e. cp858 here on FreeDOS) and cp437 (God knows why, because it's
impossible to type portuguese with that CP). That CP is for portuguese
keyboards only, which by the way also work with cp850 but not with cp437
(MS and IBM were coherent in relation to portuguese keyboards).

Regardless of the adequacy of cp860 to brazilian keyboards, I could
prepare the cp860uni.tbl (or any other) redirector; I'm glad I can help.

There's just a problem though. How do I create those files? They aren't
plain text files.

Henrique

[Freedos-devel] p7zip?

2007-10-21 Thread Jim Hall
I see that our most recent version of p7zip in the FreeDOS Software
List is 4.42, but 4.55 is available since September.

Would someone here like to try to compile 4.55 for FreeDOS, and let me
know so I can mirror it to ibiblio?

[Freedos-devel] Brasilian keyboard driver for Blocek

2007-10-21 Thread Ladislav Lacina
Could someone test the new brasilian layout for Blocek? (Henrique?)
Instalation is simple, take this archive:
http://www.laaca-mirror.ic.cz/brasil.rar
and unzip it into \KEY_TBL subdirectory of your Blocek instalation.
How does it work in unicode mode?
As redirector I use the cp858uni.tbl file. It supports most west-european
languages but I know that portugese has also own 860 codepage. So if it is not
OK, could you to create a cp860uni.tbl redirector?

Re: [Freedos-devel] A Poll of sorts

2007-10-21 Thread Tom Ehlert
Hi Pat,

> If you folks were to extend the DOS API, in which direction would you
> take it?
none at all
> Would you go with POSIX/UNIX/Linux, win32 or simply provide
> the same API with extensions for modern functionality and platforms?

the same good old API.

The reason is quite simple: virtually no new DOS software is written
in these days, so it wouldn't be used anyway.

And even iff new software is written, probably noone would limit the
program to FreeDOS only (with the possible exception of freedos people
themselves)

the last guys who tried that was DR, when they made a new API (in
their EMM386) with multitasking, TSRs/drivers in RAM beyond the first
megabyte, etc.
While it was nice (for DR users), that drivers would take less RAM, I
doubt anybody outside DR ever used this API.

certainly there's a lot to be done, like
  support for UDF CD/DVD
support GPT disks ( >2TB partitioning, but this is worked on
already, coming soon) (actually that's fairly easy)
  Robert mentioned a better (open-source) SMB/CIFS client
USB disk drivers that don't kill the USB keyboard/mouse
(read only) support for EXT3/NTFS/Reiser/Apple HFS
DOS on an Itanium (is that possible ?)
DOS on an iMAC (this might be possible)
  and probably much more.

but none of this would require the change/extension of the DOS API,
and all of that would profit both new and old software.

Tom

For most VMs we already have drivers, because VMs emulate very common
hardware. I really miss an open-source SMB/CIFS client to connect to
Windows PCs. We still have to rely on MS Network Client 3.0 here.

Re: [Freedos-devel] A Poll of sorts

2007-10-21 Thread Pat Villani
Thanks all for taking FreeDOS to where it is. Since the time when
personal commitments no longer allowed me the luxury to contribute, this
team has taken FreeDOS forward and met the project's goal. We now have
a stable MS-DOS replacement that is open source and supported. I thank
you for your kind words and I also want to thank you for your
contributions. The success of this project is the result of the time
and effort donated by all its developers and supporters, and I
appreciate what you have done.

Until I left hp ~2.5 years ago, I was restricted in my activities. I
strictly adhered to company policies, and I continued developing
experimental kernels and microkernels on my own time. Some of that
development may be applicable to FreeDOS, much of it is not. I now work
for Vonage and my professional activities no longer conflict with this
open source development activity. I'm getting restless and want to play
again :-)

The question was posed for selfish reasons, but it will help guide me in
making something that may benefit others. To this end, I am interested
in what developers feel would help FreeDOS. Your opinions may help
shape some current work. I appreciate all input, both on this mailing
list and received privately. Please continue to send them, regardless
of whether or not you feel it is achievable or acceptable. You can ask
Jim, and he can tell you that nearly everyone thought that we could not
achieve what we have today.

I will post a summary of what I receive here, so that everyone will
benefit from this poll. Thanks.

Pat
