Re: [Freedos-user] Conventional Memory

2005-10-14 Thread Jesse Petre
Thanks for your help everyone.
I installed the command.com from http://fdos.org/kernel/cmdxms.HEAD.zip
, and it increased my conventional mem to 606k, thanks a lot!
Also, mem /c returns: Invalid parameter - /C
I'm running FreeDOS Beta 8 too, in case that matters. This is on my old thinkpad, which doesn't have a cd-rom drive, and I got several errors while trying to install from the beta 9 floppies, so I just reverted to beta 8.

Anyway, redbaron works now, haha!
Thanks!

His current setting is DOS=HIGH,NOUMBEquivalent to MEM /C is MEM /C. Depends on how your FreeDOS is though.Strange that Jesse's FreeCOM uses 75KB of memory while XMS is available.Normal optimized FreeCOM uses 3KB of low (conventional) memory, and
150KB of extended memory,which should be available because HIMEM (and EMM386) was loaded.please get command.com from http://fdos.org/kernel/cmdxms.HEAD.zip

I also noted during the installation that there is a gui disk. How do I launch the GUI?
Thanks!

RE: [Freedos-user] Conventional Memory

2005-10-14 Thread Diego Rodriguez

  Here's my autoexec.bat:
 ...
 LOADHIGH C:\FDOS\BIN\CTMOUSE.EXE

You don't need to load high CTMOUSE it'll load high if possible.

  Here's my config.sys:
  dos=high,noumb
 device=C:\FDOS\BIN\HIMEM.EXE
 DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS I=B000-B7FF

 FILES =100
 BUFFERS=20
 FCBS=4,4
 BREAK=ON

 lastdrive=z
 shellhigh=C:\COMMAND.COM /E:256 /P

You must have DOS=UMB (you have DOS=NOUMB) to enable UMBs, also Do you
really need FILES=100 and LASTDRIVE=Z ?? You can save some memory using
FILES=50 and LASTDRIVE=G. If you use a cache program (recommended) you
can have BUFFERS=10 (no less than 3).

Hope this helps.

[Freedos-user] re: Conventional Memory

2005-10-14 Thread Eric Auer

Hi, we have various categories of software:
Beta 9 is only base. Beta 8 is VERY outdated
but is all categories. We have a new CD-ROM
with all categories which I call the Blair
FreeDOS distro (100 MB). You can install beta 9
and the Blair distro without CD-ROM, though:
For that, you boot from the install-boot-disk
(if your PC is old, select mono / failsafe /
text install or similar: the default GUI install
requires at least a 486dx and 8mb RAM). Then,
you have several options:
- install from 2 base binary disks (base source
  disks are not needed) and you have beta 9
- let the installer open a cd-rom image which you
  copied to the target disk before in any way you
  like (e.g. using windows or laplink or filemaven)
- let the installer open a directory to which you
  copied the cd-rom images before...

Eric

PS: Please configure your mail to use plain text without html, thanks!

Re: [Freedos-user] Conventional Memory

2005-10-14 Thread Jesse Petre
Hello all,

Bernd:
I do not have a modem or network card, just a floppy drive in it. It's just an old thinkpad I play around with.
Diego  Arkady:
I'm not even really sure what the settings in config.sys do, I was just searching on google for ways to gain more conventional memory, and copied some config.sys examples. i.e., I have no idea what umb or fcbs is.

Eric  Bernd:
Thanks for the info, I think I'll stick with beta 8 until the new one comes out (1.0 correct?). Will the new version be available on floppies like the betas?

I used the floppie disks for Beta 8. I've noted a Seal2L directory under fdos, which has an install.exe in it. I had to find (on google) and run a cwsdpmi.exe in order to install seal, but I got it working.
It's a lot cooler than I was expecting :)
Thanks!

Which installation medium did you use?Which distro?If youinstalled the GEM GUI, you can usually just change to c:\ and type gemto start it.If you installed SEAL2, you would normally change toc:\seal2 and type seal or something like that.

SEAL 2.0 Lambda is quite old now... SEAL 2.0.11 is the latest version (and
is itself rather old, but SEAL is unfortunately not being maintained any
more): download it from http://sealsystem.sf.net/, you should find it
somewhat better than Lambda (2.0.10).
