[Freedos-user] Great work!

2006-09-04 Thread Marti van Lin

Hash: SHA1

Thanks a lot for your great work (again), supercoders!

The past 24 hours I was really in a party mood, because of the 1.0
milestone release.

I am looking forward to a extended release with additional candy,
like the previous Blair distribution, that will be included to the
next Free MultiOS release, currently in development, codenamed Phoenix.

Thank you Eric, for making me aware of the great Blair distribution, I
still enjoy it very much ;)

Keep up the good work!

With kind regards,

Marti

Re: [Freedos-user] DIGG story

2006-09-04 Thread Eric Auer

Hi guys,

cool that FreeDOS 1.0 is there :-)

No need to log in, but there are actually 3 stories:

http://digg.com/software/FreeDos_Reaches_1_0
http://digg.com/software/OpenSource_MS_compatible_feature_rich_DOS_released
http://digg.com/software/FreeDOS_1_0_is_released

Hey everybody! Login to DIGG.COM and vote for the FreeDOS story...

I would not call that a story. Very short text...

But I like the new What is FreeDOS text on the freedos.org
frontpage :-)

http://www.freedos.org/

Note that fdbasews and fdfullcd also have a livecd mode :-)
We should also mention the download sizes on the download
page, and there should be a really nice readme...!

base: 8 mb
base with sources and livecd: 49 mb
full with livecd: 153 mb (lots of extra programs)
full with sources: 241 mb
boot disk: 1.44 mb (just to boot into the cdroms)

There are also real diskette distros, usually
1, 2 or 3 diskettes stuffed with preinstalled
dos programs and documentation :-) Any volunteers
who would like to update / maintain my 3 diskette
distro? All of base, all docs of base, several
small extra apps :-).

I would also suggest to start a wiki page with
known caveats / bugs on installing. For example
I heard that the 1.0 non-English documentation
still mentions beta 9 at many places. It would
help to have a place to collect known issues.

Cheers, Eric

[Freedos-user] Announcing FreeDOS on some newsgroups

2006-09-04 Thread Stegozor
Hi,

When is someone announcing Freedos 1.0 on news:alt.os.free-dos,
news:comp.os.msdos and so on? I'd like to let this honour to the team,
but if you're not willing to do it, I can do too :)

On the IRC channel, tassi_office told lets ask blair to have to honor
:). So, blair, go on ;)

Anyway, congratulations for the 1.0 release to the team, and let's hope
that Linux packages (for me: .deb for dosemu) won't take too much time
before being available on repositories.

I agree - the honor should go to Blair, since he put in all the work on
putting together the distribution. Blair, if you wouldn't mind doing
this, we'd all appreciate it. (If you don't want to, I can do it.)

Everyone else: feel free to post this news far and wide. Call your
local paper, email your favorite web site. The key links to share are:

http://www.freedos.org/
http://www.freedos.org/freedos/files/

And we have a press announcement (of sorts) available at:

http://www.freedos.org/freedos/news/press/2006-freedos1.0.html

For myself, I'm emailing the person from NewsForge/Slashdot to let them
know. And I'll contact as many tech press outlets I can think of.

[Freedos-user] freedos mirrors

2006-09-04 Thread Markus H. Maussner
hi

i try to mirror the freedos 1.0 directory.
but whenever i try it the result is always diferent but no errors occur.

i looked at the two other mirrors thats listed so far on the freedos.org
website and it seems they have the same problem.
i attached 3 screenshots since i dont know if the content would change
again.

http://www.riohealth.de/freedos1.png (ibiblio site)
http://www.riohealth.de/freedos2.png (the swedish mirror)
http://www.riohealth.de/freedos3.png (freedos.org)

as u might see is for example is fdfullcd.iso on ibiblio 153, but on
the swedish mirror 56mb big (also one day diffence) or fdbasews.iso is
on swedish 1,6 mb but on freedos.org 48,8mb.
or on freedos.org fdfullws.iso is 241mb and on ibiblio 13,4mb and so on

somehow i doubt that some of the isos downloaded will work at all. maybe
thats not a good start to 1.0.

i know blair said only the fdbasecd is the right one, but why then
publically offer the other under the 1.0 directory.

well back to my problem.. whats the right copy to mirror ? ibiblio ?

have a nice day

Re: [Freedos-user] freedos mirrors

2006-09-04 Thread Jim Hall
I've also emailed Markus offlist, but just to clear things up for
everyone else:

I guess I misunderstood that the full ISOs in the 1.0 weren't ready
for release. In the meantime, I've moved the full ISOs to
1.0-Testing, so now only the files in the 1.0 directory are the ones
that you should use.

Also, Linux CD Mall is currently selling CDROMs of FreeDOS 1.0.
They've already taken down their links for the full ISOs.

So at this point, I think everything is clean. Blair will release the
full ISOs into 1.0 when they are ready, and into 1.0-Testing
before then.

[Freedos-user] OT freedos irc / emails to markus/tassilo

2006-09-04 Thread markus
Hi

We had a major failor in our hardware. 3 Harddisks died at the same
time (well there it goes ur raid5). anyway never saw something like that.
the irc network was affected because on one of the nodes our i7c.org hub
was running.
i configured a new hub (balamb) and we r linked again. the only server
thats NOT linked is irc2 since its admin is on vacation (i already
emaied him).
anyway irc.i7c.org is a roundrobin in our dns so that u always get a
running one.
one last problem was that nobody was able to log into balamb since i had
a little config error, but thats fixed and everything runs smoth except
that irc2 isnt linked.
eric since you -for what ever reason- refuses to use domain names the
savest server would be 62.75.152.234 for you.

another system that was affected was the emails. i think all mails got
send sucessfully to the backup mx but in case i wont answer to some of
ur emails pls send it again.

thanks a lot and sorry for the problems.
