(Free)DOS runs as fast as the processor you're using allows it too.
And why shouldn't it? ;-)

For slowing down games and such, there are/were a bunch of slow-down
tools around, never used any of those myself though. One programs
name that's kind of stuck in my head in that regard's is moslo,
another Google search probably will get you into the right direction
for that... ;-)

We've been using FDAPM SPEED4 in autoexec.bat on newer systems for some
time.

If I remember correctly it was introduced because of processor (P4
3Ghz?) heat issues.

YMMV

Try adding FDAPM SPEED4 to your autoexec.bat.

It resolved similar problems I had with a ftp server I was running.

Really? What does the very first line of that page say?
We don't have an official single-disk FreeDOS available...

I tried 'dd if=balder10.img of=/dev/fd0' but got output error.
The above command works fine for me and creates a bootable 1.44MB 3.5
floppy which includes the SYS FORMAT commands

[Freedos-user] Strings %COMSPEC% Error SOLVED

2010-11-09 Thread bwspos

From Bug 1900 in the FreeDos Bugzilla Archive

Out of memory loading STRINGS
Failed to load the strings resource into memory. The location pointed to in
%COMSPEC% seems to be invalid

This error always occurs when first loading the comamnd.com program and there
ought to be enough RAM (these are all fast-ish systems - no 386's).

The error will always re-occur on the same PC however it is started and what
freedos is loaded on (CD, hard disk and floppy have been tried)

I suspect the fault may be down to memory management in the kernel rather than
freecom although I can't confirm any of this.

I have just experienced this error on a new software release.

As stated only some systems give this error (in my case at a specific
point in the software package), some others exhibited random disk I/O
errors.

My problem was caused by loading DOS high prior to starting JEMMEX in
(fd)config.sys, the JEMMEX notes specify that DOS=HIGH must be after
JEMMEX is loaded.

Interestingly several sample FreeDOS fdconfig.sys files using HIMEMX
instead of JEMMEX load DOS high before HIMEMX.

Hope this info will be of assistance to others.

Re: [Freedos-user] parallel port problems

2010-05-24 Thread bwspos
Just had the same problem with a replacement MSI motherboard a Sunnix
PCI Parallel Port card at a customer site.

The hardware installer tried 2 each of both the MB LPT cards.

The Sunnix card was sent to me for testing and it worked fine on our
test systems (oldish P4 Gigabyte MBs).

the database was transfered in toto from the old computer as we had
done previously with no effect on printing capability [previous

is it that the addin 3rd party lpt card is not usable by freedos

You don't mention installing a DOS driver for the addon card (usually in
autoexec.bat).

Most modern PCI cards need a driver, it should be on the CD if it came
with one.

I use TERMIN.COM on 24/7 POS systems with no recourse to rebooting. Not
sure where I found it as it's not part of FREEDOS

example from .bat

REM LOAD COMMS

LH C:\NETWORK\LSL.COM /C=C:\NETWORK\NET.CFG
LH %NIC%
LH C:\NETWORK\ODIPKT.COM 0 96

REM UNLOAD COMMS

TERMIN.COM.com 96
%NIC% /u
LSL /u

where %NIC% = Netware ODI driver

Re: [Freedos-user] Can't find command.com

2008-12-11 Thread bwspos
Hi Eric

Sorry for the delay but I had to wait until last nite to upload
lbacache-2008apr07.zip and a modded fdconfig.sys to the system in
question (it's 200km away) and then wait for someone to unzip test.
Just as you thought it now boots OK.

If I get a chance this weekend I will set up a system from scratch using
the standard FreeDOS 1.0 CD (fdfullcd.iso) and then check out Mateusz
Vistes FDUPDATE.

Mick
Please do try whether updating LBACACHE makes things
work again BOTH with tuns and without tuns, thanks!

I googled the TUNS option and it seemed it was only
for SCSI SATA RAID - is this this case?
I guess the FreeDOS install configured the TUNS option
 because of the SATA channel?

The install always uses TUNS, as we assume that it
gives better compatibility. It allocates the stack
in low RAM, as some SCSI/SATA BIOSes get confused
with stack in UMB. However, some LBACACHE versions
have a smaller low stack than UMB stack. Apparently
newer BIOSes need much stack space, and the 2008
update of LBACACHE should fix that problem :-).

 Eric
