Excuse me but I don't know what FREEDOS 1.3-RC1 is or what it can do.
It sounds important.

I think I see the point you are making.

Basically, those references to UIDE are from when 1.2 switched from UIDE to
UDVD2 for the cd driver.

I left them in but commented them out in case anyone wanted to switch back.

But, now we are at 1.3. So, I should probably remove them altogether.

Haven’t tried it with TICKLE. Just enabled floppy caching, reran the installer
and was pleased with the performance increase.

Somewhat. I’m no expert on the JEMM(s) or most of the other drivers. But, the
boot floppy config seems to mostly work pretty well.
The biggest issue it seems to have is with other more obscure CDROM drives and
their compatibility.

With 1.2, there were a couple (very low number considering how many downloads
of 1.2 were made) of users who got the dreaded “can’t find package media” error
message in the installer. This more or less meant that the CD drive was not
compatible with UDVD2 (or at least required some special options or handling)

Hi Jerome,

sorry about the missing context: fd13flop.img comments!

The FDAUTO file mentions all those drivers, but does
not give instructions which of them can be combined.

Users might try to use drivers at the same time which
were meant to be used _either_ one _or_ the other.

Have you tried to use LBACACHE with floppy option and
with TICKLE to speed up the boot floppy access? You
could even throw in a DIR /s > NUL to cache metadata.

In particular in protected mode with JEMM(386), U...
drivers are expected to be way faster than LBACACHE,
so different scenarios ask for different drivers.

Not to forget the usual JEMM/JEMMEX/JEMM386 risks as
far as compatibility is concerned, but I assume your
command line options for those try to minimize risks.

For a floppy oriented boot, UIDE may be unnecessary,
leaving just LBACACHE and UHDD /B for cache and I/O.

Cheers, Eric

Where do you see that both UIDE and UDVD2 are both being loaded?

All references to UIDE are REM’d out.

As for LBACACHE it is (or at least is supposed to be) only loaded when booting
from the real floppy image. All other media (simulated floppy or not) have
LBACACHE REM’s out.

LBACACHE is only enabled for floppy diskette caching. Without caching it,
running the installer from a real floppy will be quite painfully slow.

If you see LBACACHE not REM’d on anything other than FD13FLOP.IMG, it is a
build bug that I will need to fix.
Same goes for any references to UIDE that are not commented out.

Some quick comments on the FreeDOS 1.3 RC 1 drivers:

You should only load either UIDE or UDVD2 and make
sure that they have different "/D:...". I guess if
UIDE does all you need, you could change UDVD2 to a
commented out alternative. Also, since UIDE already
does caching, you can comment out LBACACHE as the
alternative for those who want another cache style,
in particular for non-EMM configurations, optionally
combined with UHDD /B as un-cached disk accelerator.
Using 2 caches simultaneously would cause slow down.

Yes. But, don’t you think it would be a little confusing for users if presented
with 2 Live boot options on the disc?

Also, media would include the best and worst aspects of both types. But, mostly
would be losing that 50mb needed for CD2.

Although, a lot have been asking for this. It’s still early in testing of RC1.
So, you never know.

Hi Jerome,

would it be possible to add a "CD1 style" mode to
the CD2? I think it is okay for people to download
larger ISOs but they like flexibility in RAM size.
