Is there a way to add bugs and to start communication with someone to fix at least some of them? BTW, when I tried to add a bug on sf site I found I don't have such permissions. Can anyone help me with it? Also, if I already prepared some patches in what way can I commit/send them to the project? -- Thanks, Valeriy. I wouldn't suggest attempting to try the git version, I'd try the 1.9.2b2 that's available from sourceforge. No there isn't likely to be a stable release you can assume that the b2 release is the final release. The reason for asking is that Arch Linux has 1.9.0 in their repos because there is no 1.9.2 release. The maintainer is asking now if there are any bugs in 1.9.2b2 so he should stick with 1.9.0 [1] I've not seen any major issues reported for the beta, and I've been running it for over a year now. I have hunch that might be because those files lack fxd metadata (they never will have fxds). Well the RecordingsManager plugin has been altered in that regard, but I would add that the scenario you describe isn't the way it is designed to work so I wouldn't say it will work without issue Ok. Fair enough. Any chance it can be made to pick up stuff as it appears, or is the directory to be considered 'managed' territory in the future? The directory will be managed in future, although there is still likely to be .fxd files created, these won't be used to populate the recording manager list. The reason for this is that the primary purpose of the Recordings Manager is taking a flat structure generated by the recordserver and giving it some structure. The one thing that got me hooked in freevo (vs mythtv when I got my htpc) was the transparency it gave when comparing the its view of the world with what I could see myself with a simple 'ls' and 'cat'. Entrusting mythtv's sqldb with all my metadata was not really an appealing prospect. I did write a v small plugin a while ago to display a 'Downloaded TV' option in the TV menu which was a just another way to browse a different directory contain downloaded TV content. Plus you always have the option of auto generating the .fxd files for your content when you add them to the directory. 2) I have subdirs in my /media/tv. Now none of them are shown in the menu. Shown where? Not sure what you are saying here? The Manage Recordings menu. Whenever I get a batch of avi:s from somewhere, I place them in a folder (mkdir, cp), to be viewed like any other show. Your best option here is to create the fxd files (should be reasonably easy to auto generate, base on name of folder and file name). and add them to the TV recordings folder in a flat structure. The important thing to note is that the video files don't have to be in the same directory as the .fxd files, so you can leave your video files in the folder you downloaded them to but still access them from the recordings manager. 3) What about the epg? It's now all empty. Any guides as to what (re)configuration one has to do? (analog tv) freevo1-git now uses kaa-epg and to access the guide you need to be running the recordserver. I've tried a few commands for vlc and mplayer that might have worked. With the generic record plugin you need to specify a script to run that will do the recording. The script gets passed a whole load of parameters (configured by local_conf.py). You need to in that script use the hdhomerun config program to configure the device and then capture the stream. Anyone got any further suggestions?? I've attached a knocked together a HDHomeRun recording plugin, drop this into the freevo/tv/plugins directory under the python library directory where freevo was installed (something like /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/freevo/tv/plugins). Yep I saw those thanks Paul. Unfortunately the recordserver doesn't support multiple shows at the same time and still support reporting conflicts to the frontend. That's the main crux of the new recordserver, to support the ability to report multiple conflicts and if possible, via plugins, automatically resolve them. It will also make a lot more use of the kaa framework. For simple/single program at a time devices (ivtv/v4l) there'll be just 2 methods to implement (start/stop). And it'll support multiple different plugins. I'll try and test my iptv_record soon. Yes, that's correct the current version of the recordserver is very limited, only a single recording plugin and only a single event being recorded at a time. I'm about half (maybe a little more) through writing a new tv server that will allow multiple plugins and multiple events at the same time (including multiple events on the same plugin at the same time if it is possible i.e. the channels on the same multiplex for digital tv). But as part of that I'm updating freevo to use the new kaa.epg library which I need to get finished off first. This sounds like a case were improving mminfo makes more sense than breaking a generally useful system. If the dev's know what dvds break things then they can look for ways to identify badly formed disks and compensate for it. I've looked into the problem before and IIRC it is a problem in the decss library which causes it to chew lots of memory and CPU until eventually the scheduler kills it. From reading threads out there it seems that this is deliberate targeting of the library by the big studios to build disks that will play fine in a dvd player but blow up when you try to use the usual decss techniques on them. I'll see if I can get an example of disks that don't work, I think Cars from Disney is a good example (and my son's favourite DVD so the most annoying one!) but I will double check and reply with some that I know don't work. TBH I may simply abandon DVD playback via Freevo all together, the new network attached blu-ray players are very tempting as they will be able to stream content directly from my NAS and will upgrade my DVD playback to Blu-ray. That will mean I can have an even smaller Freevo system as DVD drive will no longer be required. Hmmm, interesting Disney do seem to add a lot more copy protection than other publishers. Still, I've managed to play all the Disney DVDs we've got, including recent ones like Tangled, ok. On the DVD playback side in general, I really must find some time to add a VLC based DVD player to Freevo to allow Title/Chapter/Time based bookmarks and resume (something my old dvd player circa '02 could do). Looks like the user uploaded videos don't use RTMPE for distribution (that is is Encryption) so they appear to work just fine. But the big players that use youtube do use RTMPE and it looks like youtube just upgraded to a new RTMPE handshaking protocol which at the moment rtmpdump doesn't support. So the current approach won't work for these videos until rtmpdump is updated. Which brings me to a question does anyone on this list have experience with flash players or know of an open source flash player which allows access through javascript? The idea being to construct a web page on the fly that points to the youtube RTMP stream and use flash to display the video. My kids like Toy Story 2 which has some nasty copy protection which means I can't copy the whole thing to HDD (which I prefer to do rather than get sticky fingers all over it), but it still plays ok. If I put the DVD in my laptop and play it with Kaffeine I can play it just fine because it plays the DVD. In fact on my media centre it plays just fine if I launch Xine manually with the xine dvd:// style of execution. So to watch them we have to break the laptop out and watch on that. Is there any way to stop Freevo scanning / mounting the DVD's when they are inserted? And instead just launch the dvd when I select play from the Video menu? It's a real killer atm as the DVD's that are used most often can be played, and the same errors stop be ripping them to play from the network. Not really, this is used to display the name of the disc, the number of chapters and runtime. I believe the only software that can get around the copy protection is windows based and payware. (Look up ARccOS Protection on wikipedia). What program is used to parse this info? I know mplayer can play said disks if you use dvdnav:// instead of dvd://. I don't know off hand if mplayer is used though. Play yes, in fact all the apps should be able to play the disc, it's more an issue if you try and back up the discs which involves reading every sector, even sectors that will never be played. At this point the backup fails as the sectors have errors in them that prevent copying. In this way they can stop ripping but still ensure that the dvd will play on your £50 DVD player from your local supermarket... [Freevo-users] Freevo 1.9.2 Beta 2 Release (plus ...)
Actually three releases to announce, first off the 2nd beta of the 1.9.2 release is now available from souceforge. Lots of bug fixes and some UI improvements have been included in this release. Some notable points are: * CPU Usage has dropped considerably, now around 2 - 3% when idle * LIRC handling improvements. * by default the playlists plugin is now enabled allow you to create audio playlists from within Freevo. Please try this out and report any bugs you find to the tracker ( https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=46652atid=446895 ) Next up is a new release (2.1.0) of dvbstreamer, minor bug fixes mainly. Finally a new release of livepause (1.1) which now uses memmap to write and read the buffered data from disk, reducing the constant disk io. (both available from the dvbstreamer project page on sourceforge) Cheers Adam -- What You Don't Know About Data Connectivity CAN Hurt You This paper provides an overview of data connectivity, details its effect on application quality, and explores various alternative solutions. http://p.sf.net/sfu/progress-d2d ___ Freevo-users mailing list Freevo-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freevo-users

Well than, I would like to wait for v2. Could you explain in brief, what the current status of v2 is? I could use the time to get in touch with freevo v2.0. (Architecture, Configuration, ..). Probably I could contribute. Best way to describe v2.0 is in development Coming along nicely but still a way to go before it will be ready. A Shared (NFS) file system is what I use for both recorded and ripped content. Does freevo v2 utilize some streaming libs? Or is it planned? Freevo currently doesn't do this, let me clarify that slightly, well it can do it if you are receiving digit tv and use dvbstreamer, but you'll likely need 1 tuner per client and 1 for recording. Freevo can do livepause on a client without a tv tuner if you either use dvbstreamer (and the livepause app) or use the livepauseserver (again needs livepause) helper with an ivtv card. Thanks for pointing to dvbstreamer. I have downloaded 2.0.0, but it does not compile [1]. Ahh, odd mind you its been so long since I uploaded that, try using the 2.1.0 release that I've just uploaded with this and several other fixes. Does dvbstreamer support DVB-S multiplexing? I mean tuning one DVB card to a transponder and getting multiple streams from it? Exactly you can extract any number of services from a single transponder. I did not find any docs about livepause. I assume it uses dvbstreamer to get the stream and writes it to a tempfile, from which it streams to the client, right? If yes, these two tools provide basic functionality for a _very_ coarse PVR - EPG data is also fetched. Livepause is from the same sourceforge project (I'm the developer of both), and yes that is exactly how it works in freevo 1.x [1] http://paste.debian.net/109538 To give an example, my recordserver is in the loft where the tv signal is less degraded and I have cat5 to my frontend in the living room. I use dvbstreamer to stream the digital tv to the frontend and also a second instance to record. The setup is similar to mine. My Server is in the cave equipped with three DVB-S cards, which serves 6 clients with TV and recordings. DVB-S multiplexing is also very usefull with that. I have 1GE to all rooms. Also streaming via wifi is possible (10Mbit/s for an average stream). As beeing a debian user I have to question, if you have in mind to make freevo v2 only runnable and supportable in conjunction with a special customized linux distribution? No absolutely not, I just use ubuntu for the ease of use and the fact that its more up-to-date than debian. I want to say I really do not intend to switch to ubuntu. Ok, it might be worth doing this for the server(s), but not for the clients. Clients are partly used for daily work. Its also way more stable and doesn't have the plethora of bugs that Freevo has. The CPU usage is way lower, probably because it is coded in C++. The user interface is well designed and easy to use. On the downside, MMS is not so configurable nor themeable, less extensible (Freevo has a big number of plugins, although many don't work), and there hasn't been any release since 2009, which makes me think that its either very mature or it dying. Interesting I've been using freevo for several years and haven't found that many bugs... If you do find bugs please report them otherwise there is no way we can fix them! I would add that although there has been no official release in a while there has been lots of work on svn and a beta before Christmas and another in a few weeks. One of the changes that the next beta will introduce is a significant drop in CPU usage. This will lead up to the last release of 1.x branch but that just means there will be more focus on 2.x. When I hit ESC, the screen goes back to the last player view (i.e. last title played, time stopped at the last position). When hitting up / down, freevo returns to the correct directory view and reacts again as expected. [edit] Anything I'm missing here or should I fill in a bug report? I can confirm this one too... it's one I first noticed when audio podcasts would finish and I thought I had screwed something up when I made the podcast item inherit from Audioitem instead of just Item.. It was later I'd discover this wasn't the case and that it also affected playlists when they ended 'naturally'. It's been around for quite a while in SVN, from what I remember, I just haven't remembered to bring it up here on the list yet. And I can't blame anyone for missing it... I figure a lot of audio playing activity doesn't let a playlist end on its own, either because it's a live stream (I do those a lot) or the user decides to end the playback before the playlist is done. For me, once the playlist ends the Freevo goes back to the directory/menu view (LCD follows too) but it won't respond to commands. Pressing ESC has no visible effect, but now the menu responds. It's like the player view is deleted/destroyed, but control is never returned to the underlying menu until the user presses ESC. I'm pretty sure this doesn't happen when the player has been detached, only when the player view is on screen. This sounds like similar behaviour as the Image playlists are experiencing, ie they are both not working as expected. They will be on the hit list next after I've cleaned up a few things related to the change over to using kaa for everything now. It's looking sharp! Great job and many kudos to both the developers and everyone out there running Freevo and testing it and making suggestions. Maybe it's just because it's been so long since I've seen an actual update, but this leap was huge. Quick things that come to mind: Biggest problem I had was the system exiting two seconds into playing any audio, no traceback or anything. If I started audio and immediately kicked it into the idlebar (pressing 'display'), it would play fine. When I tried to 'Show Player', it finally coughed up a traceback: Traceback (most recent call last): File /usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages/freevo/main.py, line 296, in eventhandler consumed = app.eventhandler(event) File /usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages/freevo/menu.py, line 858, in eventhandler self._handle_play_item(menu, event) File /usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages/freevo/menu.py, line 663, in _handle_play_item action(arg=arg, menuw=self) File /usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages/freevo/menu.py, line 106, in select self.function(arg=self.arg, menuw=menuw) File /usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages/freevo/audio/plugins/detach.py, line 157, in show self._attach(menuw) File /usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages/freevo/audio/plugins/detach.py, line 142, in _attach gui.show() File /usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages/freevo/audio/player.py, line 151, in show self.refresh() File /usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages/freevo/audio/player.py, line 183, in refresh skin.draw('player', self.item, transition=transition) UnboundLocalError: local variable 'transition' referenced before assignment It would appear the definition of 'transition' is held inside an if statement, although the skin.draw statement is not. When the if statement is bypassed, 'transition' is never set. I fixed it by adding 'transition=None' before the if statement, but this may need to be better fixed. That is useful to know I was just about to start investigating that :-) LOVE the new text entry screen, and I love the triple-tap shortcuts. I just was a little thrown when it came time to enter the line after triple-tapping it in. I pressed 'Enter', but since the selector was on the 'A', it added an A to the entry box. Perhaps if the triple-tap is used, the selector jumps to 'Search', so all you have to do is press 'Enter' to go? I Like this idea I see what I can do I also love the new shutdown screen with the colorful icons. The option to reboot is very welcome! However, I think it needs a more obvious 'Cancel'. I pressed 'Exit' thinking it meant exit the dialog box... oops! I know now I can use escape to get out of it, but that's not immediately apparent. Perhaps under the three buttons have a long bar for 'Cancel'? Hmm, I've always wondered about my decision not to add a cancel button, And speaking of 'Exit', is there an option to get rid of that button for those of us with stand-alone dedicated Freevos? On my box, pressing 'Exit' will drop you to a terminal window (on the TV) full of leftover log information and the only way to restart it is to power cycle or ssh in and restart the front-end service. For me, better to just have 'Power Off' and 'Reboot'. I've used cancel to allow me to restart the freevo interface by adding a while loop in the shell script that start freevo, means I can easily restart the interface without waiting for the whole system to reboot. Can you raise a feature request for this on the tracker. Tried out the Category Search... I really like it, but I think it needs some kind of indicator when there's more than one episode for a listed show. Obviously you should select a category to find shows, but I couldn't figure out why some shows immediately displayed information and some didn't... until I selected one that didn't have any info and found the whole submenu of episodes. Again, something that isn't immediately obvious. I'm not sure how to do it yet (perhaps something like the icons in the Recordings Manager, or display episode names in the info area, also like RM?) but it's something to consider. Again another good idea ... Finally, and this is purely aesthetics... the new dialog boxes look a little strange. I think it's because they have lightweight borders (one pixel?) and light font weights, when the rest of my interface (Blurr) has heavy borders and bolder fonts. It just doesn't look like it

Granted, usually when I need to restart the interface, I'm either already hacking on it (so I'm logged in) or it's crashed/wedged so bad I can't get back to the main menu through the interface. I'm just thinking out loud here, but wouldn't it be interesting to have a hidden 'restart interface' button, like the 'hibernate' option in Windows XP? XP normally shows 'Standby', 'Shutdown' and 'Restart'. But if you hold down shift, 'Standby' turns into 'Hibernate'. What if pressing Display while at the shutdown menu, 'Reboot' turned into 'Restart Interface'? Again, just thinking out loud here. ^_^ Try out the proper skin 'blurr' rather than my amateur he's what you can do with this base skin :-) Oh ho! 'Here's a quarter, go get yourself a real interface skin?' ^_^ I'm using Blurr, as selected through the interface. I checked and short of some local modifications I'm playing with, all the files in share/freevo/skins are up to date with SVN. Of course as I admitted in the last e-mail, things in my local copy got a bit wonky for a while. I'll back up my changes to the skin fxds and revert them and see if it changes anything. In the meantime, is there somewhere else I need to go to get this proper 'Blurr' skin? Or is it affected by something outside of share/freevo/skins? The dialog skins use completely different skin files than the main skin and at the moment the GUI can't select which dialog skin to use. To change the dialog skin you need to set a config variable ie DIALOG_SKIN_XML_FILE='blurr' Cheers Adam -- Special Offer-- Download ArcSight Logger for FREE (a $49 USD value)! [Freevo-users] Freevo 1.9.2 Beta 1 available for download
Just in time for Christmas, I've upload the first beta of the 1.9.2 release. There has been lots of improvements and bug fixes since the last full release over a year an a half ago. A quick snapshot of some of the changes: * New improved graphical display when playing videos (requires kaa.display, recommended) * Improve IMDB support using imdbpy * Asynchronous loading of thumbnail images to improve browsing speed. * Updated Apple Trailers plugin * Updated Youtube plugin * Search screens now use mobile phone number style input. ...and lots more see the ChangeLog for full details. This is only a beta not the full release (which will come sometime early next year) so there may be some bugs but please do try it! Without input from the community I can't fix them as I can only tests so much and although I'm now running this on my main machine I sure I've missed something :-) I expect there to be some further improvements so there may well be a Beta 2 before the final release. On Wed, 10 Nov 2010, Alberto Hernando wrote: Hi. I tried installing 1.8.2 but I couldn't. I think it needs python2.4 but I have 2.5 (debian stable). Going back to 2.4 breaks a lot of stuff, so I tried freevo-svn (and kaa-svn) again. I'm not worried about memo usage as described in the thread you linked. But I think I've figured what the exact problem is. I can go forward and backward well. I can play with the zoom (0-9). I can rotate images, use OSD. Everything with lots of big files. Great. But I can't exit. If I press ESC or S, then things are broken. I can still see the current image but I can't change it. Funny, I can still rotate it. My guess? The image plugin doesn't give back the control to freevo and they are fighting over the input. Freevo doesn't use 0-9 so images rotate. Next minute, freevo updates the clock and I can see it. Same for free space. That's why I see the upper bar. Re: [Freevo-users] Freevo shuts down immediately after coming up
On Wed, June 16, 2010 7:39 pm, James Trietsch wrote: Eureka! The hat goes on the head! (Sorry, couldn't resist a quote from Futurama) I fixed the sporadic immediate shutdown issue. I had the good fortune of watching it crash right in front of me after finishing a recording. I checked a few things and found the filesystem was nearing capacity (again, the clean-out daemon runs under the GUI), so I deleted a few things and tried the GUI and it came up! A-ha! Long story short, every time the remaining free space fell under the deletion minimums, the GUI stopped working. I enlisted a host of print statements to narrow down where it was crashing and on what particular program entry. It was giving up trying to find the last-accessed time for a particular MPEG file. I went to check the file and found out I had an orphaned FXD! The FXD existed and was being put into the menu but the MPEG had somehow been removed. It was trying to find the last-accessed time for a nonexistent file. Why it was silently crashing, I'm not sure (unless it has to do with that process running as a daemon). I deleted the orphan FXD and everything is back to normal. It even cleaned up the directory back above space minimums. By the way, the check on last modified time is something I added myself (and haven't submitted yet) because I had run into trouble where if the Freevo was recording and ran out of space while you were watching a previously recorded show that happened to be the best candidate for deletion... it would delete it while you were watching. Or it would delete it right after you finished watching it, so you never got a chance to mark it to keep if you wanted to keep it. I put in some code that anything accessed in the last 5 minutes would not be put on the candidate list and it seems to work. But now I may need to add some error-trapping to it. Or something to look for orphaned FXDs and/or MPEGs couldn't hurt either. Interesting, an edge case I hadn't considered. I'm in the process of rewriting the Recording Manager as a UPnP Server and a client Plugin. This is to fix the problem of the GUI having to be active to clean up the disk if it gets full. At the moment I have a separate backend server running 24x7 and a frontend that is only on when needed, so I need a separate app running on the server to clean up the disk. Making it UPnP means it can export the recordings to XBMC/Myth/Or anything else that understands UPnP Content Directory Servers and means I don't have to mount the disk over NFS. I may steal your idea and add it to the server process to catch this edge case :-) Cheers Adam -- ThinkGeek and WIRED's GeekDad team up for the Ultimate GeekDad Father's Day Giveaway. Reggie I also had the same problem and I discovered that this is a know problem with mplayer not finding the correct PID for h264 encoded streams. You have to edit your channels.conf file and add the missing information. I found a guide here: http://telperion.wordpress.com/2009/10/14/dvb-t-hd-con-smplayer-e-vdpau/ This is an italian blog, so I will translate the whole procedure for you: Open your channels.conf file with an editor ad find the line for one of your HD channels. It should look like this: Canale5 HD:75400:[other_things_here]:HIERARCHY_AUTO:1010:1011:5305 snip Or more simple, as you have DVBStreamer working, start it up and type lspid service name -n And then look for the line where the second number is 27 and use the first number in your channels.conf For example: lspids BBC HD -n 21 PIDs for BBC HD 2318 5 0 2319 5 0 2320 5 0 2321 5 0 2322 5 0 2323 5 0 3840 5 0 3841 5 0 3842 5 0 3843 5 0 3844 5 0 3845 11 0 3846 11 0 3847 11 0 3848 11 0 5500 27 0 5501 6 0 5502 3 0 5503 6 0 5504 6 0 5506 5 0 pid 5500 is the one containing the H262 video. |Now you finally have the piece of information you were searching, the PID number. In this example is 215.| |Come back to your channels.conf file and edit the line for your channel:| || |before:| ||Canale5 HD:75400:[other_things_here]:HIERARCHY_AUTO:1010:1011:5305 after: Canale5 HD:75400:[other_things_here]:HIERARCHY_AUTO:215+1010:1011:5305 Now you're finally done. Save the file and check if mplayer works. Repeat the above procedure for every HD channel in your channels.conf file. Cheers, izio Good luck. I've not used the generic_record plugin so I don't know what you will need here, perhaps the wiki might have some more info on writing the script (?!). snip i'm sure i've left out some information so please let me know if you would like anything else, or i can just post the whole config file if that would make it any easier. a big thanks in advance for the help... -bryan Hope this helps and when you get it working any chance you could add a few words to the wiki to help any one else in the future? The stream seems to be set up to udp://localhost:1235 quite fine. But nothing seems to grab the stream. Any pointers where to debug that? I've had a look at the log and I can't see anything wrong, the signal must have locked as the stream is being processed (new PMTs are being received). So are you say that when you stream manually to udp://localhost:1235 you can receive it with xine or vlc and it works fine? Try running the same steps manually and see how far you get. Start DVBStreamer in command line mode, In a second terminal start livepause and enter the following command: fill udp localhost:1235 Then in the first terminal select the channel and set the mrl: select VOX setmrl udp://localhost:1235 In the second terminal you should now see !Data Started Followed by every second: !Data Acquired If you don't then use the stats command in the dvbstreamer terminal to see if the service filter is processing anything.
