Sawtooth P1 burnout advice

2008-10-03 Thread Bill Christensen

Update:

The power supply itself checks out. Voltage is good for all pins,
including the blackend ones.

I'll check various other components separately on another machine
(processor, RAM, cards), but assuming those are working does anyone
here know how to diagnose a mobo?

original msg
--

Hi all,

Looks like I have a problem with one of my 'teeth.

It wasn't powering up properly - would start to come on then die
before any drives came up - and in the process of looking for the
problem (suspected power supply) I found that three pins on the P1
power connector are blackened. All are +5 volt (pins 6, 19, and 20)
according to
.

Which is the more likely culprit, the power supply or the
motherboard? I don't want to risk blowing my spare power supply, or
the dual 1gig processor on the board for that matter, by cooking
something further. I see no other obvious signs of trouble. No
charred parts or places where smoke has escaped.

Obviously I need to dig around and find my meter (I think I hid it
from my 7 year old last time I put it away and now don't remember
where) to see if the existing ps is still functional. And i'll
probably swap the processor for an old 450 single and put the 1gig in
a different sawtooth to test it. Any other suggestions on how to
proceed?

Thanks.

Third party, you can go up to to dual 1.8Ghz.

Of course, you have to be certifiably insane to spend $700 upgrading a
$50 computer :-)

Hi

I work on PB 867mhz, 1 ghz ram. I connected to internet via DHCP and

Something weird happens when i open network preferences. I have this

Re: G4 startup problems UPDATE!

2008-10-03 Thread Pix4work

Thank you for your input. Not knowing how to properly identify a
retail Tiger disc, I was sold a grey OSX disc. That indeed may be a
source of the install problems. I am wondering if it's the only reason
the machine will not power up; perhaps Apple has some info doc's on
the subject. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

That does seem to work, providing one does it on all boot drives ;-)

Re: AGP 400Mhz Upgrade Options

2008-10-03 Thread dc

Check the uni-n # to see if it will support a dual processor. If yes
the dual 500 MHz from a Gig-E will fit right in with no mods needed.
It will be the cheapest upgrade. It will run Tiger easily, I have one
running Leopard but that is borderline on the DP 500.

Re: Rotten smell raises Apple toxin fears

Hi

I have had a number of iMac G3s and these smell terrible of burning. I changed
the plastics on one recently and whilst testing it afterward smelt so bad of
burning plastic I thought I had done something wrong.

But my sons iMac G3 smells just as bad.

Actually come to think of it (or smell of it) my wife's old G3 iBook started
to smell like B.O. after it was serviced for a new hard drive. That was
about 2 years ago and it still stinks when you boot it up. I'm thinking
it's the hard drive because the logic board was replaced twice from two
different service centers and the stink is still there. Kinda like the
episode of Seinfeld when Jerry's car started to smell bad after the valet
drove it.

AGP 400Mhz Upgrade Options

2008-10-03 Thread Simon Royal

Hi

What processor upgrade options are available for my PowerMac G4 400Mhz AGP.

I know I can max the RAM to 2GB, but ultimately a faster processor would
bump the speed. I know they came in 400/450/500Mhz so I could just find a
500Mhz chip, but are there any further upgrades available?
