RE: G4 Power Mac M5183 up grades!!!

Subject: Re: G4 Power Mac M5183 up grades!!!

Ok the computer was built around July 2002 it has a 466mhz processor,
 896mb (1-128mb/1-256mb/1-512mb), ATI rage 128 pro video card, 30G 5400rpm IBM
Deskstar HD (March 2001), Sony CD-RW CRX140E, IOMEGA ZIP 250... I think for
now all she needs to do is add 2 more 512mb cards, 7200rpm HD, probably that
SATA PCI card, and Tiger and I think she will be good to go??? If we get
everything used off ebay this should keep the price under $100, I already
have the Tiger disc... She has a HP 23 monitor from the PC she is using now
but I think she will have to change the video card to run that monitor??? I'm
not sure if this Gateway 2000 CrystalScan 16 I found will be good enough
though??? This is where I'm at with this right now and it's up to her, I do
not think she would even have a problem with spending $200 because she tells
 me she loves this machine!!!

Yes, the Ram and HD upgrades are your best options but be aware that these
models have the 128Gb IDE HD restriction.
If you go the SATA card though, you can of course put much bigger HDs in there
as you probably already know.
Check what resolution the monitor requires - for a 23 it is probably something
like 1920x 1200. Then you buy a videocard that can push that resolution out -
something like an ATI Radeon 9800 128mb - probably about $100 on ebay.

466 is kinda slow, if you can get a faster processor cheap I'd sure do
that too. Hard to get a DVD to play on 466.

I have a G4 AGP 400 MHz in my cellar and I use it infrequently for watching
DivX videos while on the home trainer (ergometer, bicycle?).

The videos have always been using 100% of the Mac's performance. If something
disturbs it will drop some frames. Annoying this is.

So, I got me a Dual-450 processor card for cheap on eBay. And, what can I say?
It really gave Leopard a boost. Watching the DivX movies is with only very few
frame drops – and then only, because some applications start looking for new
versions online and the video comes from a network storage.

For the DA: it has a 133 MHz system bus and any DA or QS processor will fit.
You could make it a Dual-1 GHz, but this processor upgrade will most likely be
very expensive.

There are rare occasions to grab a Dual-533 processor card from a DA. This
might be cheaper, but I don't really know.

You cannot use the Dual-450 and Dual-500 from the pre-DA G4's since these are
from 100 MHz system buses.

The other boost is a better graphics card. I use now a flashed PC nVidia
GeForce3 Ti200. This is good for Leopard, but not really necessary for Tiger,
although it will also enhance the performance on Tiger or even Panther.

Overall I would say that upgrading depends on two factors:
1) what do you need it for, and
2) how much money will you have to invest in order to fulfill 1)

E.g. I have only 512 MB RAM in my G4 AGP with Leopard and I have to say that
for my purposes this is suffice and I don't need more at all.

Something is wrong. The optical drive should be using the hardware DVD
decryption in your Radeon video card, and if you're struggling with
DVD from your optical drive and the CPU is max'd out, this likely
means your System is using software decryption rather than the
hardware decryption available in your Radeon card. I'm not certain how
to fix this problem, but I'm certain that a 500MHz with a Radeon card
should play a DVD from an optical drive smoothly without dropping
frames as long as the hardware decryption is working. James'
experience confirms this: I play DVD(s) without any problem
whatsoever on my 400MHz Gigabit running 10.4.11, 768MB RAM and 123
Rage Pro (16MB VRAM) on a 22 Samsung flat screen. James is using a
Rage card (which also has hardware DVD decryption), but your Radeon
should be more than capable. I'd look for a solution, there is a
problem.

As an aside... My old 466MHz G3 Clamshell running Panther also

Funny thing is that I did run into a few problems after a security

the best available path. I like to wait a bit and observe reports of
