Re: Downclock Powermac G4 mdd
Thank you for your answers! Well, as far as hardware way is concerned, I will not take that route. I would risk too much. The fan was already replaced when I bought the computer - silenter and more powerful, that is what the one I bought it from told me, but still too loud in my opinion. Also altering the pin configuration is not something I am prepared to do. I will consider once again putting one cpu down and enabling nap mode... Thank you for your answers. SATA Drives on PCI card will not mount in G5
I've tried everything I can think of. I have a PM G5 with 2 SATA drives in the upper and lower bays and 3 additional drives in a Sonnet Jive 5 bracket; the drives are cabled to a SATA PCI controller card with SIL3124 chip. I have also tried 2 different Seritek IV4 cards. The drives will not mount, they never show up in Finder, System Profiler of Disk Utility. I know the drives (Seagate 7200.10 500GB) are good. I have put each one into the lower drive bay where they load up just fine. They each passed the SMART tests, have been partitioned with 1 partition and are formatted HFS extended. I cloned the system onto one of them and it boots up normally as long as it is in the lower bay with it's direct connection to the motherboard. When I move the connection to the PCI controller card it doesn't show up. I know the cards are good. The Seritek cards have run before in this G5 and in a MDD G4. The cards show up in System Profiler, the firmware is updated and the drivers are installed. It's not a power issue. The drives get warm so I assume they're spinning. I even hooked one up to and external power supply to be sure it was getting enough power. The SeaTools utility only runs in Windows so it can't help me check the drives. Maybe there is something I can do through Open Firmware to mount the drives? -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Need help with a disk problem
I have a PowerBook G3 (Pismo, 500mhz, 1GB RAM) which has been running under 10.4 for some time. Recently, though, I've noticed some disk-related problems which I could use some help with. The first problem appeared during an update for Office 2004. Like most installers, it popped up a dialog that it would be running a program to detect a suitable installation disk. When it came to that point in the install, however, do disks were shown, greyed out or otherwise. I have attempted to repeat this installation, even going so far as to download a new copy of the update, with the same issue. The next problem came when running Apple's Software Update. Basically, the progress bar gets to about 25% and stops updating. I've allowed this to run for hours with no further progress. Finally, in an attempt at resolving the first two problems, I ran the Onyx utility. Onyx hangs, however, while determining the SMART status of the drive. In order to fix the problem, I've tried the typically recommended fix of booting from the Tiger Install DVD, running Disk Utility and doing a Repair Permissions. Although a lot of permissions were fixed, the problems persisted with the next reboot. Interesting, it may be my imagination, but it seemed to take Disk Utility a long time to identify my disk. At this point, I'm starting to lean toward a failing hard disk (40 GB Hitachi TravelStar), but I was wondering if anyone had any other advice or, at least, pointers to an error log I could check (dmesg shows nothing useful). Thanks. John -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Essential utilities for G4 powermac
Greetings. On Aug 25, 3:36 am, Matevž Markovič ivwcorporation.mat...@gmail.com wrote: I would highly recommend Applejack. But I think it can only be installed on the boot drive. Also ClamXav would not hurt - we live in dark times, and is getting darker, even for macs :) I think Applejack can be installed on any and all installed Disks, however you need to boot from that drive for it to work. Try searching sourceforge.net. And for the last resort, learn using OpenFirmware. It is very powerful and also extensible. The same goes for the Intel Macs - install rEFIt, along with the EFI shell, and learn how to use EFI shell as well. Try to find utilities which can be invoked from the OpenFirmware. Myself, I have never done that, but I am sure that it can be done and that such utilities exist. The problem with modifying OpenFirmware is the all modifications disappear when you reboot. As for the pure troubleshooting utilities, I would recommend Apple Hardware Test, or some other LiveCD which has those utilities preinstalled. Depending solely on your hdd and utilities on it can be dangerous. I hope I have been of little help. When it came to that point in the install, however, do disks were shown, greyed out or otherwise. I have attempted to repeat this installation, even going so far as to download a new copy of the update, with the same issue. There are some installers floating around that include a bad version of that volume checking applet, that often crashes or hangs on ppc macs. Check for crash logs. Will do... The next problem came when running Apple's Software Update. Basically, the progress bar gets to about 25% and stops updating. I've allowed this to run for hours with no further progress. Could be HD. But just as easily could be your network connection. Network connection is otherwise good, so I'm disinclined to think that's the issue. Finally, in an attempt at resolving the first two problems, I ran the Onyx utility. Onyx hangs, however, while determining the SMART status of the drive. Ok. What does Disk Utility show? Nothing obvious. Does Disk Utility show SMART status? What else isn't working correctly? Nothing. It seems to be running fine otherwise. In order to fix the problem, I've tried the typically recommended fix of booting from the Tiger Install DVD, running Disk Utility and doing a Repair Permissions. typically recommended by whom? Certainly not on these LEM lists. We only recommend repairing permissions when you definately have a permission related error. And that's very very very very very rare. I'd have to go back and try to find the exact site, but it was the suggested fix for what looked like the same Software Update hang. Nothing you've said in this message indicates a permissions problem. You seem to think you have a HD problem. If that's the case, then repairing permissions could be very destructive! Interesting, it may be my imagination, but it seemed to take Disk Utility a long time to identify my disk. Take a look at your system log for errors. Use Console.app to peruse it. Good thought.. I forgot about that one. Run a repair disk (NOT permissions!) pass using Disk Utility. I actually did that at the same time as the permissions fix. Re: CCC image bootable?
When I replaced my boot drive with a larger one, I booted off the original drive, and cloned over to the larger one. There is a message that comes up, if you have set it up right, that says that the copy will be bootable.. Mine was. After the drive swap I noticed no difference in the operation of the system. I have only used CCC once so I am not as fluent as others on this list are with the program. But I can see no reason why it wouldn't be able to make a bootable backup, and you shouldn't have any trouble restoring it to the original. Sadly, the only way to be sure that everything works with the hardware you have chosen, is to actually do it. Best of luck. I LOVED Firefox. It was my browser of choice for a number of years, and still is on the Windows platform. But it became very unstable a few months back, just like Dan says, and I have ended up a reluctant lover of Safari 5. I NEVER liked Safari --it's bland, it's not as pliable as Firefox, it has a certain smugness to it that I don't particularly care for-- but Safari 5 has proven to be fast and stable, and does not suck as much RAM as before --in fact, although I can't prove it, I find it uses less RAM than Firefox.
