Joan,

I bought a monitor just like this one from this eBay vendor a few
months ago, and have nothing but good things to say about it:
http://tinyurl.com/29ny9wj

I have not been able to find such a big, great quality monitor at this
kind of price anywhere else. You may also want to check Buy.com --they
tend to have great deals on displays.

Oh, and by the way: this is NOT spam --I have nothing to gain either
way if you buy from any of those vendors.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Felix

Amen to that. Netflix's movie selection is second only to Facets', and
they're just too pricy. (By the way, I've just watched a Korean
thriller, The Chaser, which I highly recommend.)

As for streaming Netflix movies, the choices are several: some game
consoles, some DVD players, a Roku box, and practically any cheap PC
you can lay your hands on. And, of course, an iPhone or iPod touch,
and any Intel Mac. A good video card won't hurt, either --I had a
2.2Ghz MacBook, and it couldn't quite stream movies in HD quality, but
my 2Ghz iMac simply rocks HD content.

Just my two cents.

Apple provided a utility called Eject in the CD Extras-Eject Extras
folder on the OS 9 install disc which came with some Macs, such as the
iMac G4/800. (I don't know if it's available for download.) It is
designed to open and close the optical drive bay when third-party
keyboards without a 'Media Eject' key are used. You can use the
application itself most easily via a desktop alias or assign a
function key as a shortcut. It can be used with all Power Macs.
(There's also an Eject Control Strip module included.)

If you have Toast Titanium 5 on your G4 MDD, you may find that the
following AppleScript script will open the lower optical drive bay. It
works for me :

tell application Toast Titanium
eject
quit
end tell

An equally simple script does the reverse :

tell application Toast Titanium
close tray
quit
end tell

OS9 on the G4 MDD's requires a special ROM in the system folder.
AFAIK it can't be found easily on any OS9 installers you have to copy

it's more than enough for our needs, and won't require any more hardware
to be purchased (SB Live has OS9 drivers from what I understand, 640mb RAM
  should be enough too)

Does OS 9, or any of the three tools I mentioned, support both processors
in the dual 533 G4?  If not I'll definitely go Tiger.

That machine will run OS 9.2.2 in fine fashion, very fast. however you may
need a special ROM to boot OS9 on that PowerMac G4.

Thanks for all the tips everyone.  I have another question about
 graphics cards.  First, my progress:

 * Formatted, installed 9.2.1, upgraded to 9.2.2.  Managed to complete
the firmware upgrade to 4.2.8 (yay!).
 * Discovered that the SB Live 1.1 drivers will not work for me.  I
don't know why, but after installation it complains that the drivers
were not installed properly and to try again.  It could be that my
card is not supported and the error message is just confusing.  I
tried searching for the 1.0rc1 drivers instead, hoping to install
those first and then try a 1.1 upgrade, but I couldn't find them
 anywhere.
 * Also discovered that the Midisport Uno that I have is not OS9
 compatible.  http://forums.m-audio.com/archive/index.php/t-1985.html

Okay so 9.2.2 is not going to work.  About to install 10.4 Tiger from
scratch instead, and simply hope for eventual recording support from
 the Kx Drivers project.

I had a question about the graphics card.  This is a Geforce 2 MX with
32MB of RAM.  I have in the garage a Geforce 3 of some sort, which I
think would benefit Tiger thanks to the higher speeds and more RAM.
Can I drop this card in the AGP slot, or is it unlikely to work?  I
know there is something or other about changing firmware on a video
card to make it Mac-compatible but I don't know anything about that.

just today i decided to try to re-flash an old AGP card i had in my PC
parts bin. i followed the directions on the website that Justin
referenced:
http://themacelite.wikidot.com/
to the letter. the key is finding the exact right mac BIOS for your
video card. the mac elite website has a list of BIOS's, but i also
found some on
http://campahunta.free.fr/Downloads/ROMs/
i had to try a couple of different rom's for my card to find one that
worked.
i'd suggest googling different sites on reflashing PC video cards.
you will pick up some good info, such as how to download and save the
PC BIOS that is on your card, so that you can always go back to the
orig BIOS if something gets screwed up when you try to flash the card
with a mac BIOS
good luck!!

I'm from Austria, so maybe things are different over here.

The G3-G4's use half-sized AA batteries, which are some (if not that one that
isn't half) standard. You should find them at places where they sell
electronic parts at suitable prizes. I bought mine at a regular electonics
shop (where they sell all kinds of diodes, capacitors, fuses, ... and
batteries!) here in Austria.

If you prefer the internet: search for 1/2 AA or half AA plus 3.6V
Lithium and you should find what you need.

The G5 also use these 1/2 AA batteries, except for the Late 2005 PCIe /
Dual-Core models. The Dual-Core-G5's use a 3V coin cell lithium battery
labeled CR2032 which is widely used in all kinds of stuff. You should even
find this one in a supermarket...

Hope that helped.

I don't think any modern browsers support 10.3.7.

The newest version of Firefox you can use is 2.0.0.20.

You'll need at least 10.4.11 for current browser support.

is good for around 4 years, however the only Macs that really can't start
without one are very few and in the PowerBook family and a few early Macs. I

noticed when I shut down and tried to restart that the power button on
the front did not work either. I was able to power up using the

The Camino browser has specific builds for every OS X flavor/update
still available on their site

http://caminobrowser.org/download/

Camino also has specific builds of the latest version of their browser
for each individual G3-G5 processor on Pimp My Camino

But I would recommend downloading the Combo Update to OS 10.4.11. It
offers more features, stability and a lot more software choice. And it
comes with Apple's Safari browser - which you can then update further

FireFox browser is nice too, mostly for the plethora of add-ons and
plug-ins, which, depending on what you do/like, might be nice to try.
It's pretty big, but my wife won't use anything else on HER G4

Ooops. Just re-read your post and realized you are at 10.3.7
I guess I would just recommend Camino then
