extra connector on AGP card with ADC output

2011-03-16 Thread faithie999
i have a sawtooth, which i know didn't come with an ADC monitor.
however, i'd like to have an adc-capable card in my parts bin.
i looked at one on ebay but there is an extra tab with a few contact
on it, maybe 1/2 to 1 inch in front of the agp contacts.
i thought apple used contacts 3 and 11 especially for the ADC monitor,
but obviously these extra contacts must have some purpose.

what are they for, and i assume that G4 machines that came with ADC
monitors have an extra socket in front of the agp socket into which
this tab inserts.

finally, was this design only for the G4, or would this card work in
an AGP G5?

thanks!

this ebay listing has a decent picture of the connector i'm curious
about:

512Mb PC133 ram as said is dirt cheap this days...and will give you a

If you need some advice on upgrades, read the powerpc faq that I made
on Macrumors http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1091765 it
may help you :D
Emacs are cool because of the size and the All in one form, but if
anything goes wrong you will have much more trouble fixing it..

Safari 4.1.3 for Tiger: Fast, but Not Perfect

 Charles Moore - 2011.03.15

Apple takes a lot of stick from users of older Mac hardware for dropping
support for their machines from later versions of the Mac OS - and for older
Mac OS versions from the latest software.

 Well deserved stick, IMO.

 [snip]
However, I want to salute Apple for just releasing one more update of its
Safari browser for OS X 10.4 users. Version 10.4 is not supported by the
current Safari (version 5), but along with the latest Safari 5 security
update release, Apple also issued a Safari 4.1.3 update for us holdout Tiger
users, and it seems to be a very decent browser - possibly the best left
among the diminishing handful of up-to-date browsers that still support OS X
 10.4.

Folx, can you please double check me on the version of Safari? AFAIK, Apple
has left us Tiger users with our pants hanging open - there just is no
corresponding security update for Tiger, to go with the 9 March 2011 release
 of Safari 5.0.4.

 Safari 5.0.4 update:
 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1070

and it references Safari 4.1.3 for Tiger, dated 18 November 2010.
 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1069

 [snip]
until I noticed that there was a lot of hard drive activity going on in the
background even when I wasn't doing anything. I tried closing tabs. Still no
 joy.

However, quitting Safari 4.1.3 ended the background busy-work Starting up
Safari caused it to resume. Bummer, that doesn't happen with Opera, OmniWeb,
or SeaMonkey, all of which I use regularly on the Pismo.

This has been covered on the LEM lists repeatedly, I believe. Safari is
updating the Top Sites its site preview images. If you turn off the Top
Sites, that background traffic goes away.

 [snip]
the need to use an installer and restart the machine after installation
instead of just dragging the application into the Applications Folder

Again, covered on the lists: Safari is NOT a self contained app. It is an
app plus a bunch of shared frameworks (WebKit, et al). The only way to
complete the installation of those frameworks is to make everything accessing
them - other apps and system components - let go, which is most cleanly done
with a reboot. Now, if you want, I'm sure Apple could provide a stand-alone
version of Safari. Then you can deal with all the wasted memory from having
 non-shared sharable libraries.

Disabling Top Sites

2011-03-16 Thread Yersinia

Hi Listers,

Info: G4s and a G3 iBook running OS X Tiger

How do you disable Top Sites entirely? Clicking the x on the little
movie screens when you go into History/Show Top Sites makes the ones
that were there go away, but I keep getting MORE little movie screens.
What I would like is for them all to be gone, PERMANENTLY, and never
generate any new ones, so that Show Top Sites is always empty and stays
that way. Is this possible?

Thanks. :-)

Re: extra connector on AGP card with ADC output

2011-03-16 Thread Brian Kemp
My G5 1.8 single (late 2004) has an Nvidia 5200 card w/ that same
connector. My best guess is that since AGP does not have pins for
Power and USB, that's what it's for. Only macs that originally shipped
with ADC connectors would have that port - so not all G5's have it
from what I understand.

USB requires 4 pins so 311 aren't enough.

It is annoying that Apple didn't provide a clear interface in Safari.
Very very poor / inconsiderate design on their part.

It is a multi-step process. ( to expand upon Andy's reply ).

0. Launch Safari and close its windows.

1. Safari's preferences, General tab. Select something other than
Top Sites in the new windows and tabs pop-ups. For performance
purposes, I prefer Empty Page.

2. Safari's preferences, Bookmarks tab. Uncheck Include Top Sites.

3. Bookmarks window. If the webpage preview thingy is showing, grab
its size slider and push up until it vanishes.

4. Reset Safari dialog. Check Reset Top Sites and Remove all
webpage preview images and Empty the cache. For an added
performance kick, check Remove all website icons. Then hit the
Reset button. Wait about 10 seconds and quit Safari.

If the above doesn't crush that @#$% feature, then look into wiping
out prefs files.

i have a sawtooth, which i know didn't come with an ADC monitor.
however, i'd like to have an adc-capable card in my parts bin.
i looked at one on ebay but there is an extra tab with a few contact
on it, maybe 1/2 to 1 inch in front of the agp contacts.
i thought apple used contacts 3 and 11 especially for the ADC monitor,
but obviously these extra contacts must have some purpose.

what are they for, and i assume that G4 machines that came with ADC
monitors have an extra socket in front of the agp socket into which
 this tab inserts.

finally, was this design only for the G4, or would this card work in
 an AGP G5?

 thanks!

this ebay listing has a decent picture of the connector i'm curious
 about:

 thanks for the answer.

 followup question, then:

is it a reasonable assumption that the vga output of such a card (or
the dvi, if a card has that as the second output along with an ADC
output) will function if there is no 25V socket in line with the agp
 socket?

I believe that's correct.

You really can't overclock one of those as far as I know. Get all the
updates from apple, as well as the Flash Player updates and try a different
web browser.

clock speed of my DA is lower but it also has more onchip cache memory
so I am wondering if the higher clock speed on the Emac will actually
translate into improved performance. Another appealing pro for the
Emac would be for space. my office is kind of small so being able to
fit the whole computer on my desk is appealing. After all the Emac is
about the same size as my G3 Studio display CRT that I have the DA
 hooked up to.

I gave this computer to a teenager. He said that You Tube is like a

If there is it is probably impractical. Given the proper information and
truckloads of money it could probably be done…

He would probably have better luck using YouTube's HTML 5 option,
perhaps even uninstalling Flash and using Safari with the browser ID set
to Safari iPad.

I'd stay with the G4 DA, investing the money into upgrades.
First, memory: 1GB Ram should be enough.
Second, maybe, a processor upgrade; I think you could find something cheap
on eBay.

I have a G4 DA as well, originally 667 MHz, now with 1GB Ram and a 1.4 GHz
CPU upgrade. I'm using it professionally for DTP, with Adobe CS3... so it's
still a very good machine, being born in 2001. :-)

Another advantage of having a desktop unit, you can easily upgrade its
components: apart from Ram, I changed several HDs, added a GeForce 4 video
card and USB2 card, etc. (you can't do most of that with an eMac).
