Re: Prepping a G4/10.5.8 for sale

2013-01-30 Thread kimtoufectis
I used DaleH and Bruce's instructions to clean off my stuff, and made sure
the machine boots to the main partition again, then tried the instructions
below and hit a wall.

I got to a command prompt by holding CMD-S while booting, but my keyboard
entries didn't register at all. Here are the last few lines before the
prompt:

BSD root: disk0s3, major 14, minor 2
Singleuser boot -- fsck not done
Root device is mounted read-only

If you want to make modifications to files:
/sbin/fsck -fy
/sbin/mound -uw /

If you wish to boot the system:
exit

:/ root#

...so I'm stuck?!?

  Questions:
  1. Can I do this from Disk Utility or do I need other software to
 proceed?
  2. What are the steps I need to follow to proceed?

Should you want to prepare the machine for a new user, so s/he has to go
through the process of adding a user and password, the following process
may be used (this also works should you forget your own password):

 1) boot the machine into single user mode using CMD-s,

 2) enter the command fsck -fy

 3) enter the command mount -uw /

 4) enter the command rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone

 5) enter the command shutdown -h now

The machine will power itself off.

The next time the machine is powered on, OS X will enter the user and
password setup process, through the usual Willkommen dialog.

 And today's chapter:

http://mac-security.blogspot.com/2013/01/just-turn-java-off-very-high-security.html

Here's the thing: anyone who can run a vulnerable version of Java on
their Mac and has installed Apple's security updates has already
done this. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573
The last Java update Apple released went through and purged Java
from the browser plugins. (As I found out, unpleasantly, when I
tried to use a network-based KVM we purchased. Yet another
'Universal' devioce that is truly universal, it runs under Windows
on Dells, on HP's, on Lenovo's…)

(Apple's relesed these updates for 10.6, 7 and 8. 10.5 and lower is
officially deprecated, and doesn't run the latest versions of Java.
PPC machines CAN'T run the latest versions of java. I'm mildly
surprised that they released the fix for 10.6.)

Anyone else either deliberately went out of their way to re-enable
Java or is not running a version that's vulnerable.

Almost all of these new security issues with Java are the result of
Oracles new code in the latest version.

(and the appeal to 'Open Source' java just won't happen. As I've
said before the entire impetus for Oracle to buy Sun was to acquire
Java, which is Oracle's lifeblood, since so much of their database
stuff is now written in Java.)

Everything else (like hardware, VirtualBox, etc) was gravy for them,
and Oracle is no more going to open source Java than they would
Oracle Enterprise Database.

Late 2005 G5 - what to expect n start-up concerns?

2013-01-30 Thread DLC
Greetings all,
I have a late 2005 G5 (dual-core, 2.3GHz model). It has been very nice to
me these last 3+ years. ABout 3 weeks ago, I went through a couple days
where the only way I could start it out of a cold boot (1st thing in the
morning) was to reset the SMU (reset the board), then zap the PRAM upon
successful launch. Did this maybe three times. I then replaced the CMOS
battery with a new 2032 battery, reset the SMU one more time, and the unit
booted fine. This seemed to have done the trick and for about 8 days, I had
start-up bliss as I had come to expect from it.
Tonight I turned it on (first time since Monday night), and it was back to
its old tricks, and I had to reset the SMU again to get it started (it's
running now). Besides the possibility that this brand new battery is not as
fresh as it should be, what other concerns might this habit be indicative
of?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
Regards,
Dana

I think this is more of a Safari issue than a Flash Player issue. I've
noticed many sites such as PBS, BBC, etc. won't play Flash in Safari,
but give no problems is Firefox using the same Flash Player plugin. I
just went to History Detectives and it wouldn't play in Safari, but
was fine with Firefox 3.6.28.
