I decided to give an old Performa 5300 a go. the built in monitor comes up and a disk with a question mark that keeps flashing. I tried holding down the option key when booting up to see If it would give me boot up choices, but just the same. Does anyone remember other boot option commands? The optical drive does have a paper clip access hole, it's just difficult to get to it. You can try 1) pulling down on the outer drive door cover while applying gentle pressure with your fingertips. If you can get the door open this way you can see the access hole. 2) open the side of the G4, twist the optical drive 90 degrees sideways while leaving the power and IDE cable connected, load the disc, then put the drive back in place. You have two alternative methods of opening the optical drive in your QuickSilver. 1. Shut the machine down properly. Restart in the normal fashion and hold down the mouse button until the optical drive opens. and 2. Open the hard drive. Select the System folder. Select the Library folder. Select the CoreServices folder. Select the Menu Extras folder. Double click on the Eject.menu to install a menu that will allow you to open and close the optical drive from the menu bar. More on Upgrading my G5
I've been searching the net, and I've found all I needed. Now I just need to decide which graphics card to get. Geforce vs Radeon. OEM vs Retail. I found some G5 only cards which look like they were designed for the extra long AGP PRO slot, then I found some G4/G5 Pro cards which claim to be AGPx4/AGPx8 but look like standard AGPx2/AGPx4 cards. I assume they are designed to be backwards compatible, but I don't see how the cards could take advantage of the AGP PRO features while using the AGP connector. Does the AGP Pro only versions of the cards offer anything over the AGPx8 cards? I read one review (Radeon 9800 I believe), which claimed the card needed extra power from the power supply, requiring him to hack power from the DVD drive's power connector as the G5 lacked the extra power connectors found in most computers. Is it true that the ATI Display software does not work with OEM Mac cards, but works with retail versions of the same ATI Radeon cards? I'm now looking for at least a 128M card, APGx8. I looking toward the ATI Radeon cards, as I like the option of a software control panel. Dana mentioned getting a PCI-X compatible USB or USB/FW card. Is the USB only 1.1? I thought it had 2.0. The sound features on the G5 look pretty good, but... do I need a special card for surround sound? What type of sound does the G5 offer. - Ron. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Upgrading a used G5
I just got a 1.8Ghz, G5 for $45.00, from a government auction. It's one of the original G5's with a 900Mhz bus, but it has only 512M of memory and it's missing its hard drive and graphics card. Getting the memory (8 gigs) will be easy, so will the hard drive. I found the mounting screws for the spare HD hidden inside the case. Currently, I got the G5 running using an external firewire HD, and a Radeon 9200 PCI in one of the 100Mhz PCI-X slots. Is there anyone selling AGP x8 Pro cards for the G5? OWC appears sold out. Also, would the Radeon PCI card run better in the 133mhz slot? Is the Radeon currently running at 33Mhz or 66Mhz in its current slot? Any suggestions for upgrades? - Ron. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Lombard power issues

As far as a different power adapter is concerned, am I right in thinking that the adapters from Clamshell I- books are compatible with lombard and pismo? Peter I cannot answer this with certainty without having one of each adapter in front of me to read the label. Check the output voltage on each adapter to be sure that you are not putting a high voltage into a low voltage machine. As long as the plug fits the socket and the voltage output also matches, you should be able to use the adapters interchangeably. Apple made some changes in the size of the plug/socket from one model to another and that can cause problems if you don't properly identify the needed model of charger. And, then Apple came out with the MagSafe adapter which uses a totally different connection method. Thank you, Apple, for the added confusion! --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Lombard power issues
This scenario tells me that your battery is hosed and your charger may not be working either. When the Lombard sits unused for a while, it can sort of recharge the battery if it is plugged into a power outlet. It may not take a complete charge because of the age and condition of the battery. You have described a momentary power on and power failure situation when you said that it came on for a few minutes and then went black. This is the classic description of a battery without any charge in it or too weak to hold a good charge. Suggestions: Try starting it up with a power adapter plugged in and the battery removed. If it runs, the power adapter is good. If it doesn't run, the power adapter is probably at fault. Try starting it up with the original battery (charged up), but with no power adapter plugged in. If it runs, the battery is good for a while anyway. If it doesn't run, the battery is probably at fault. Try starting it up with a different battery (if available and charged up) and no power adapter plugged in. If it runs, you have confirmed that your original battery is at fault. Try starting it up with a different power adapter (if available). If it runs this time, the original power adapter is at fault. By doing it in this manner, you are eliminating each power source as the culprit one part at a time and can concentrate on repairing or replacing the suspect part. Happy testing. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. There is no need to make a guess of the value of your RAM modules by going to some exotic web site and trying to decipher the markings on a chip. Your second question about a board with 16 chips per side leaves out a lot of information that might help someone to identify it. Is the card a PCI card and does the card have any socket to plug something into? What does the socket (if any) look like? What company manufactured it? As of now only the center hard drive plate can be removed the others are stuck with the damaged screw heads. Use a sharp edged tool like a small chisel to score a nock from the screwdriver slot to the edge of the screw head. Then, use a small hammer and the edge of a flat blade screwdriver to drive the damaged screw around and around until it comes loose. Be careful placing the edge of the screwdriver blade in the nock that you created so that it will push against the nock instead of slipping out. You might want to use the chisel instead of a flat blade screwdriver since it already fits the nock you made. Be sure that any screw that you use as a replacement has fine threads instead of coarse threads. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Maxtor 40gb HD shows up as 19gb in Disk Utility
Another possibility is that the bridge jumper is set to the size limiter setting. Check that before doing anything else. If the jumper is set to the limit setting, the full capacity of the drive will not show up with any utility program. Re: How to Remove Floppy Drive in Beige G3 Tower
You must remove the front cover panel that is in front of the floppy drive. Open the case by removing the side panel so you can unhook the tab of the panel from the chassis. Once you remove the front cover, unscrew the screws holding the metal mounting plate for the floppy drive. Pull the metal plate out of the chassis. Unplug the floppy drive ribbon. Unscrew the screws holding the floppy drive to the metal plate. You are done removing the floppy drive. Follow these steps in reverse order to install the replacement floppy drive. Re: I don't dare shut down this Mac
I agree completely with Mr. Al Poulin. It appears to me that you have so much going on at startup that your Mac is having trouble finding all the pertinent parts to complete the startup procedure. As Al says, disconnect all your peripherals and try a normal startup. If it works properly, then add one device at a time, restarting with each device connection, and you may find that one of your devices is the root cause of all your problems. It is common for a single external device to be the root cause of slow startups, especially if there is an active OS installed on that device or an active install/bootable CD is inserted in it. Another thing to look into is whether or not you have performed the regular maintenance steps for daily, weekly, and monthly maintenances. I have used the programs Cocktail and Onyx for doing my maintenance scripts and they seem to do the job without any problems for my PowerPC G5, my 1.4GHz QS G4, and my new 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro. Good luck with solving your problem. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
