Home Theater PowerPC Takeover?
One of my (too many) side projects was a not-yet-ready to be published website for Home Theater PowerPC - using a G3, G4, or G5 Macintosh and various audio and video equipment to (inexpensively) make a home theater, audio/video jukebox and/or legacy gaming system. I've got several mostly finished pages (65% done?) with various how-to info, pics and links, but no time to keep researching and playing with different things - much less time to complete the site and polish it. I've tried to make sure all the graphics are either not copyrighted, or I did them myself. I also tried to focus on freeware and open-source software, but some of it isn't - also some of the software descriptions are copied and pasted directly, so please don't publish yet yourself as-is without changing. And I can't garuntee complete accuracy - I haven't had time to research every scenario, etc. Anyhow - if anyone in the group is interested in taking this endeavor over (or, even if you are just interested in HTPPC) please email me directly at t...@savingus.org with HTPPC in the subject and I'll reply with the website as-is; a 1.8 MB zipped file consisting of 7 incomplete web pages (still easily viewable in any web browser), a CSS file and an image folder of 99 images (I used maybe half). Since you specifically requested info on Flash, you might check out Geexbox http://www.geexbox.org/ which is a tiny (Unix/Linux like) OS specifically designed to make your G4 a media player, also called HTPC (Home Theater PC) or MCA (Media Center Appliance). It will load from a thumb drive it's so small and portable. You can try out GeeXBox just loading it into RAM - which is what I did at first. This took roughly 20 minutes including the time to download the OS, burn it onto a CD and start it up on a G4. If you like it enough to install onto a hard drive, you may. Unfortunately work was suspended on this OS in 2007. For the same sort of HTPC/MCA thing but newer (as in still being updated) and as an add-on for your requested OS ubuntu, there is mythbuntu http://www.mythbuntu.org/ The later would probably be more what you are looking for. We had a electrical storm a couple of days ago so I unplugged it, forgot to plug it in until today, when I did and pressed the start button, NOTHING! Put a new MB battery in it and pressed the button again, NOTHING! I have never had a computer die and this is my old computer and it is lean and well maintained. Ideas and suggestions welcome, Dan Hi Dan, Before giving up on it, pull the battery again, and reset the motherboard by pressing the PMU button (good solid 3-5 single push). I recall when one did this on older G4s that resetting the board worked best by unplugging the power cord, unplugging the PSU from the board, yanking the battery, pressing the reset button, then waiting (at least) 10-15 minutes before reassembling. Just happened to a QuickSilver recently (the dead part); glad I remembered this trick. HTH, Dana Please do try Dana's suggestion. If this still doesn't revive it, don't give up yet. More G3-G4 Voodoo... Do Dana's instructions again, this time unplug the G4 from the wall, unplug all peripherals, yank just the battery, press the PSU for a 5 second count, then immediately press the Power button for another 5 second count. Let the computer sit for about twice as long as you did before. Pop in the battery again, close, plug in only to an outlet with no peripherals whatsoever and power it up. Still no dice? Do it all over, but this time plug in the one peripheral you might need - the keyboard to make it start off the DVD, external HD, another computer, your network... Hold C, or X or Command-Option-Shift-Delete, T for target disk mode (if you have another system you can hookup via FireWire), or N if you want to try netbooting. Hold down Option to display icons for all available bootable volumes. Still isn't working? Try a super-reset by zapping the PRAM 3 times in a row [Hold Command-Option-P-R until you hopefully hear a bong, keep holding until you hear the bong 3 times]. COOF: Then move your top two fingers from the P R keys to the O F keys (you are still holding down the Command and Option keys, your just moving your other fingers from the P and R keys to the O and F keys). COOF should bring up a Unix command line prompt (%). [return means press the return key] Type: reset-nvram return set-defaults return reset-all return Still not there? Try fsck -y: At startup hold down -Command-S keys until (hopefully) text begins to scroll on screen. At the Unix command line prompt (%). Type fsck –y [fsck space minus y]. Hit Return. Scrolling messages, then the final line should say * FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *. Repeat over and over until the screen says The volume Your Volume Here appears to be OK. Re: G5 1.6, XBMC Home Theater?
More than likely it's not two DVI ports, but one DVI and one ADC, if one has rounded sides, it's an ADC connector. Right you are, rounded sides. I was just told tonight (by the bloke who gave me the G5) it's a special propriatory Apple connection for a flat see-through monitor. I guess that's an Apple Studio Display. I pick it up tomorrow. As for XMBC, sure it ought to work just fine. I suspect the G5's fans and general heat output might be an issue in the living room, but it certainly cannot hurt to try. Great news that XMBC should work. Yes, been reading how these machines run hot - luckily it's Winter and I have this Entertainment System in my basement. Also, DVI connects just fine to HDMI I should have said I have an ancient entertainment system instead of just old. I thought I would need a DVI to RCA (component video Y, Pr, Pb) adapter and found several for really cheap because apparently they don't work. More expensive ones were non-returnable. All reviews I read were horrible. Then I ran across the Apple DVI to Video Adapter [29 pin combined DVI - RCA 1 x 4 pin mini-DIN] Shortened description: The Apple DVI to Video Adapter was designed specifically to allow Power Mac G5 systems users to connect from the DVI port to S-video or Composite video devices such as TVs, VCRs...on the Power Mac G5 system only. MAKE AN ACCOUNT FOR EACH CHILD that keeps them from any application you don't want them to have access to (and keeps them from seeing the hard drive even). The Mom would her account with admin rights... but just for an extra measure of protection, I would add in another Administrator account too - that YOU might use in case everything get's really screwed up - you could still log-in under your user name and password and fix stuff. [Please realize I only used 10.4.11 Tiger, but the basic stuff I think is still the same. Also realize these were directions to a parent] When my 5 year old daughter logs on, she only sees a few educational games, lots of non-educational dress up Flash Games and only the educational websites I've bookmarked for her in Safari. My 10 year old son sees the educational websites I've bookmarked for him in Safari (you can completely block them from the Internet too), some games and some apps (like OOo4Kids - a fantastic version of OpenOffice for children). For both my kids they do not see the full Finder, so they don't have access to the Hard Drive and other things I don't want them messing with. TO CREATE A USER ACCOUNT: go to Apple/System Preferences/System Accounts (two silhouettes). Click the lock on the bottom left if it's locked and put in your username and password. Then click the little plus + sign above the padlock to add a new account. Put in your child's name or nick-name, give them a password, type the password in again to verify, Describe the password in a hint for them if you want and click the Create Account button. DON'T click Allow this user to Administer the computer unless they are old enough/experienced enough to do so. If they are fairly young, or you're just worried about them messing with stuff they shouldn't (I know I am) YOU SHOULD click the checkbox for Simple Finder. You can pick a picture to go along with the account, check off any apps you want to start up automatically in Login Items, and then click the Parental Controls button. From there, Click Application and Finder to pick which apps you want your child to have access to (for Flash Game access, make sure the application iSwif is checked in Finder and Applications). If you choose to allow your child(ren) to have access to the Internet, click on Safari too - in both the front screen of Parental Controls and in the list of Apps under Finder and Applications. For Safari, you have to then log in as them, Run the Full Finder, Open Safari, go to Safari/Preferences.../Security/ and uncheck the Enable Parental Controls box - Delete any bookmarks you don't want, add any bookmarks you do, then enable parental controls again, go back to Simple Finder. Later, if you are just adding one website for your child, you can just make them turn the other way, put in your user name and password and bookmark the site.
