Does the Radeon 9650 support dual monitors?

2011-11-07 Thread Len Gerstel

Seeing conflicting answers on the web, Mactracker and EveryMac.

My new G5 (dual 2.0, early 2005, pci model) has a Radeon 9650 card.
Before I spring for an ADC to DVI adapter, just wanted to check here.

Does the Radeon 9650 support 2 displays? Not mirrored, but regular
duals?

Thanks,
Len

There were two versions of the Radeon 9650, one with an ADC and a DVI,
and another with two DVI.

They both support two displays spanned or mirrored, your choice.

I wouldn't buy an ADC-to-DVI adapter, another video card or another
monitor is the more cost effective route unless the adapter is a
killer deal.

I have a G5 2.7 DP, Early 2005, with its Radeon 9650 card (dual DVI output).
I confirm it drives two monitors beautifully. :-)

Why making a card with two display ports...
and not driving two monitors...? ;-)

I read ADC adapters could be espensive (in the past), though.

I am am 99% sure the 9650 supports two displays mirrored or regular
dual. I did a lot of research on GPU's a while back. The 9650 was
almost as good as the 9800 pro and did support dual displays (except
if you were using a 30 display if my memory serves me correctly).

Re: Does the Radeon 9650 support dual monitors?

2011-11-07 Thread Ashgrove
Len,

As a rule of thumb, if it has two ports, it supports two displays. The
only limitation would be VRAM size, but it's highly improbable you'd
have that problem with the 9650.

As for mirroring, the only Macs stuck in mirror mode were some of the
ones with built-in displays, like the iBook and the eMac lines. It was
an artificial, software-imposed limitation, and Screen Spanning Doctor
takes care of it.

Well, there are cards with three display ports that only drive two monitors.
Specifically Radeons that have two VGA and a S-Video out.

DOH!!. It helps if I actually look at the card as installed. 2 DVI
ports. My mind was clouded with the view of the FX5200 in the other
G5 I picked up for my coworker (dual 1.8 pci-x) that had a DVI and ADC.

I know that many older cards had 2 connectors that were for either/or
but not both at 1 time. The Radeon 7000s were like that. DVI and VGA
(and S-video), but IIRC, could only drive one monitor at a time.

Thanks all,
Len

ps, Just finished cloning a Sawtooth to the Dual 1.8 and it booted
fine with no issues.

I never met any card like that, since a long, long time...
In 2004 I had a Radeon 9200 PCI, and even that had dual display output.

I'm pretty sure that any card with 128 MB Vram or more, has dual display
capability; at least, on the two main ports (being those VGA, DVI or ADC).

S-Video can be a different thing, thou, but I never used that.

I want to get another one of these LCD monitors and run dual displays
... how do I connect them to the MDD?

Do I get an adapter? Do I get another ATI Radeo 9000 PRO card?

Never tried or done this before.

Help!!

Hi, Dan,

I use a Sewell Direct USB to DVI External Video Card. The only
problem I've had is with the mouse acting weird some of the time on
the 2nd monitor. This problem just started with 10.5.6.

Your Radeon 9000 Pro should support dual monitors (assuming you're
currently using the ADC port?)

Just get an LCD with DVI and plug it in.

If you're already using the DVI port, and don't have an ADC monitor,
you'll likely need a new card to replace the 9000 Pro. There are many
options, and some can be inexpensive if you know what to look for. I'd
try and get one that supports Core Image and Core Animation. You might
look at this video card comparison:

I'm assuming the Apple display is ADC. If it is, AFAIK, that would
preclude running two off the same computer. Only the AGP slot has the
power that is used to run the monitor and there is only one AGP slot and
only one ADC port on any card.

You are going to have to use a VGA or DVI monitor as the second monitor,
depending on what the other port on your video card is (probably VGA).

There is one option, this:

http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=532575

It lets you hook up an ADC monitor to a DVI port. It seems to include a
power supply but the description isn't clear.

Note, this item is simply one that came up on a Google search of ADC
DVI adapter. There are likely others to consider.

Personally I wouldn't use this approach. The sucker costs $120 which is
around the cost of a 17 monitor. I'd just get a 17 or so LCD monitor
with a VGA interface.

I recently bought a refurbished 20 LCD monitor with DVI, VGA, Composite
and S-Video inputs for about $100. It does have 3 pixels stuck on
black, all next to each other on a corner.

I bought one of these adapters to run an ADC monitor off my G5's DVI
port. I think I paid around $100 at the local Apple store, and they
also are available on the Apple website. I bought it because I've got
an old 24 Apple Cinema HD Display that runs off ADC, and my G5's
video card has no ADC port. I wanted to keep using this nice big old
monitor after I moved from a G4 to this G5.

Yes, the adapter has its own power supply, and the power brick is
nearly as big as a paperback book, but it just lies here on the floor
under the desk and I never notice it. And it works great to run this
Cinema Display. It was cheaper than buying a newer Cinema Display with
DVI, which would have cost around $600, judging from what I see on
eBay.
