Problems such as what? MA does not touch the system folders at all, only the
user directories and non-apple applications, and it's file-level transfer so
disk directory issues don't get moved over.

If you click the reveal arrows at the beginning you have a choice of what
things or users to move over.

What will really screw you up is if you create a user with the same name on the
new system than try to import another user profile on top of it.

The occasions when you DO NOT WANT TO USE IT are those when the system
or hard drive on the 'old' machine has problems that you want to avoid
on the new machine. Then its often better to do a clean install on the
new machine and only move the minimum amount of files from the old one.
Since, at least in my experience, Migration Assistant tends to be an
'all or none' sort of thing, I typically end up using other means to
move stuff in that situation. Caveat Emptor, your driving habits and
mileage may vary, etc.

   From what I understand this
program is supposed to transfer all of your settings from your old Mac
to your new Mac. Supposedly, it will transfer programs, too. Does
anyone have experience with this?

I"ve done this dozens of times without a hitch...it works very well.

I have some software that came
installed on my old DA G4 that I don't have the original discs. I
think they are all OS X Power PC software. Will these transfer to the
G5?

Yes.

Rumours have circulated and no one has ever produced this code. There
are some minor patches that have gotten partially through the boot
process, but none that work in any meaningful capacity in my
experience.

I believe the necessary mod would be to the ROM "file" in OS 9 rather
than the ROM firmware of the Mac.

For me, 600VA (300W) is enough for: Power Mac G5 tower, 20" LCD
screen, 2 routers, and 1 external USB2.0 hard disk.

Transition Manager

2012-02-25 Thread smac0031
I have acquired a G5. In reading about it I have stumbled onto
something called Transition Manager. From what I understand this
program is supposed to transfer all of your settings from your old Mac
to your new Mac. Supposedly, it will transfer programs, too. Does
anyone have experience with this? I have some software that came
installed on my old DA G4 that I don't have the original discs. I
think they are all OS X Power PC software. Will these transfer to the
G5?

I have also become aware of a patch that will modify the Rom on a G%
so it will run OS 9. Does anyone know anything about this. Is this
worth messing with?

Finally, I bought an UPS, and happily it has already paid for itself.
I had one of those winking on an off power surges like the one that
blew out the power supply to my DA G4 last year. My DA went through
this untouched. However, the G5 seems to suck too much power for this
thing. It came with an 80gig HD and it seemed to run OK. I got a
400gig HD for it and once I tried doing more involved stuff with it
the UPS shut down. The UPS isn't all that big, 425 watts, I think. How
big an UPS do I need need for the G5 and a 23 inch flatscreen?
