Well, the following is a brief excerpt from the web site:

The VideoLAN project is pleased to announce the release of the first
version of the Goldeneye branch of VLC: 1.0.0.
This major release introduces many new features, new formats and new
codecs to the VLC multimedia framework and fixes a very high number of
bugs that were present in the 0.9.x or 0.8.6 versions.

I haven't noticed yet what the differences are from the 0.9 releases,
but I trust that they are there.

As for what platform it runs on ... my primary use of VLC has been on
Windows. I only started using it on OS X a few months ago when I got a
 MacBook.

Read the VLC instructions.

v1.0.0 is LEOPARD ONLY.

This means that ALL G3 Macs can only use v.0.9.9a, and only if they
have 10.4.11.

You can get the PPC version of 0.9.9a here:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

Also - it is possible to install Leopard on Beige, but you'd need a G4
CPU, a Radeon or nVidia PCI card, and some persistence. See
instructions here:

Its not rare really. Some developers prefer not to number 1.0 or above
where others would be up to version 3. Its just a style of doing
things. For instance if OSX had been versioned in this style 10.1
would have been maybe 10.0.1 and 10.2, 10.0.2, etc. Some developers
actually stop around 0.2 or 0.3, believe it or not.

In this case I am not sure what the strategy means. It could mean the
end of ppc support, it could mean that the project as a whole is
considered complete and the team is breaking up, in which case someone
may do minor updates or take it over and/or big changes in the program
will ensue shortly.

The program is called VLC, Video Lan is the project name. It is
basicly a Linux program ported to osX, which means the culture is a
bit different for some mac users ---

It even works on PPC, but only for 10.5.
VideoLan has released version 1.0.0 of its software, one of the more
robust and format inclusive video players for OS X.

Myself I use 0.8.6 in Tiger and it works great, I see no need to
upgrade. Also my experience says never use anything with a double zero
ending, but that may be a personal preference. Anyway the 1.0 thing
means very little positive significant other than perhaps there was
some publicity pressure due to ignorance in the OSX world...

They have been saying for a long time, don't expect VLC to work very
well on a g3. The best thing about VLC is their excellent g4 support
(besides the freedom derived from free software, I mean) -- that
enables one to play many things on a slower g4 that would be skippy
with other players.

There is a plug-in for the 0.8.6 version BTW (not in newer versions
currently) which might be able to serve as a better flash player in
browsers ...

VideoLan is an application, not a plug-in, and so precedence is like
every other application on a Mac. It is determined by what the file
metadata says, that is, what you see as the default program when you
do 'Get Info' on a file.

It's no different than having both Photoshop and Graphics Converter,
or Firefox and Safari on your Mac.

Embedded players will still use whatever Quicktime plugins that are
present on your Mac.

I tried to use VLC 1.0.0 on my Dual 533 DA under Leopard 10.5.7, and
it played the original VIDEO_TS file fine.

I have a HandBrake conversion to m4v (Quicktime/mp4 I believe its also

Dual 533 speed issue?
