I think the ADVC-300 worked on my old 1.5GHz PB G4, but I don't know if the
dual models would work.
Sent from a computer running either the SPARC, Itanium, or PowerPC
architecture.

Along with Final Cut Express 4 to Capture and add Chapters, I needed the
iDVD that comes in iLife 09.

Researching how to accomplish the conversion, I read that since USB works
in bursts of data transfer, it doesn't work as well for video conversion as
 Firewire.

This ADVC300 solution is quite a bit more expensive, but works quite well.

If you want to go the USB route, there are cheaper solutions that do
just what the Roxio does. I use a device called iGrabber, which works
perfectly for capture off VHS tapes. I've used it successfully with a
1.07GHz iBook G4, so your dual MDD should have no problems with it. The
files it spits out will work fine in iMovie.

I use the Elgato EyeTV 250 Plus (something like that). I'm using it
with a G4 mini which is somewhere around the performance of a Dual 1
GHz. It can handle recording. It bogs down a bit when trying to do two
things at once (recording and playback for example) but only the
playback suffers. I mostly use it for recording off the air but I have
used it to record VHS tapes too. I bought it from www.macsales.com at a
pretty good price as a refurbished unit.

My guess is the polarity/connector isn't matching up. I have the same
case fan in my MDD (plus 2 smaller ones in the PSU). To install it I
took the connector off the OEM case fan, carefully matched the
positions of the wires, and then swapped the connector onto the SilenX
fan, taping off the 3rd wire. *hint- before removing the connector
from the OEM fan take red and black permanent markers and color code
the sides of the connector to be sure you put the power and ground
wires in the correct spots. You can remove the wires from the
connector using a paper clip to press the prongs down.

Re: Which SATA PCI adapter will work in a MDD?

2009-02-06 Thread yawg

Hi Peter,

The Initio-based adapters work well in G4 Macs. Less well in Intel Macs.

Both the LaCie and OWC adapters are (were) Initio-based.

The OWC adapter has switchable internal/external, and the external
connector is indeed eSATA, just as the internal connector is indeed
 iSATA.

Today I got my Hitachi 1TB SATA disk and the ICIDU PCI SATA controller
card which has two internal and two external channels. Low behold:
it has an Initio-chip model INIC-1620TA2 on the board. So there might
be hope that it will work in my MDD G4? And might even be bootable? No
ICIDU Mac drivers available though.

Could I try the drivers from another Initio-based SATA controller
card? What do you all reckon? It would be just wonderful ...

I'm posting this from my Gmail account and hope that there will be no
double post. I once even did a triple post accidentally. When I posted
a reply I got a time-out and refreshed the page. So the time-out
wasn't a time-out after all.

TIA for your help.

Regards, Jörg.

I found this instead which looks very promising. The seller claims his
 card is bootable under Panther:

That appears to be a Silicon Image-based card.

Si I has a very responsible approach to MacOS ... nearly all (if not
all) their products have MacOS drivers available for download.

Silicon image cards aren't bootable in PPC Macs, and perhaps not in
Intel Macs? (does anyone know?). We know they boot in BIOS based
Hackintosh, but that doesn't help Mac owners get a bootable card
cheaper than a Firmtek card.

I am using a SeriTek SATA card in my MDD. It is bootable. It runs in
PCI slots as well as PCI-X.

The Initio-based adapters work well in G4 Macs. Less well in Intel Macs.

Both the LaCie and OWC adapters are (were) Initio-based.

The OWC adapter has switchable internal/external, and the external
connector is indeed eSATA, just as the internal connector is indeed
iSATA.

The LaCie adapter has only external connections, but, alas, the
connector is iSATA, not eSATA.

For the LaCie, you would either use the LaCie external SATA cases, or
you could obtain a the non-standard iSATA to eDATA cable from one of
the many ePray vendors which ship from Hong Kong.

The cables are inexpensive, about $3.99. Shipping is about the same.
