Wow but Yikes!!! Was: powerbook g4 15 1.67ghz screen closing not sleeping laptop??

2009-01-08 Thread James E. Therrault

This is a great site but...

I have a G4 Aluminum Powerbook that I would like to put a larger HD such
as 160 GB or larger.

I was appalled at the lousy industrial design in Apple notebooks as
opposed to the pro level desktops. Twenty-Two freakin' steps! Might as
well be an iBook.

Compare this to the ancient laptop, (the one and only), produced by
Power Computing in 1997. It took all of six minutes to upgrade the HD in
it! Superb industrial design.

I can certainly see where Applecare is a must if you buy their laptop.

I think that my next one will be a munged PeeCee notebook that will run
OS X. At least it will be cheaper...

Once you've ID'd your model, they have brilliant downloadable
illustrated hi-res step-by-step guides on how to do most things Mac -
how to take your Powerbook apart to replace drives, screens,
motherboards, power supplies etc - they even list the tools you'll
need for the particular task. It'll show you how to access the magnets
that Bruce mentioned in his post.

I agree with you over the older Powerbooks/iBooks,however upgrading the HD
in a Macbook takes about 3 mins.

Thanks for the update. OTOH, the failure rate of the newer notebooks is
higher than the older ones. sigh

As a retired process, (manufacturing), engineer, I have little patience

still drive a (very) old car..

And while you have that old car, I need not ask you care for it like you
would a child. Because the trend now is for us to drive computers...making it
impossible for us to change even the oil. As regards Apple's laptops: I
consider each journey into them, except the Pismo and Lombard, a challegene
against Apple. Sticking it to them as they obviously do not want people in
them, based on how they pack 'em. But the zeal is draining...I've now for 4
months been dreading opening up an iBook with the dreaded video problem. And
 yes, I know about ifixit.

Y'know, folks, that Apple isn't the only manufacturer on the market
that makes fixing laptops more difficult than fixing desktops...it's
kind of the nature of the beast. Try fixing a Sony or Toshiba
sometime...go ahead...I dare you.

There ain't people like iFixit for the Windows world

And James...I have just ONE word for you and your old-time
manufacturing designs: Kehin

My right wrist STILL hurts like hell from that crease on the
firewall...8-P

My old Studebaker will run even when the Iranians drop that surprise
neutron bomb. Consider that the two ton beast gets up to 25mpg too.
Even my gen II Honda Civic can be quickly converted to points 'n
condenser and that gets 42mpg in mixed driving.

I had a 466 MHz clamshell with a paltry 10GB drive. I was lucky in that
I conned a local Mac Guru to change it out to a 120GB. Freakin' HD was
the last item in the case access-wise.
