Here's a note for sound pong from audiogames.net. The zip file on the site
is missing openal32.dll so go grab a copy of that file easily found on the
net and put it in the bin folder of sound pong and run spong.exe and the
game will come up running. To play Sound Pong press the space bar to start
and then use the left and right arrows to keep the ball in play. Press f1

Re: [Audyssey] Mainstream games accessibility

2006-08-07 Thread shaun everiss
I think this is a general thing so will post here.
The simple answer is if there are sources avalible online then yes
such games can be made accessible.
Ofcause its not as simple as that.
In the case of quake, they use other opensource projects (zquake) to
base their stuff on.
Then there is a question of support, if an engine aint going to last
long online even if its easy as shooting a gun or walking down stairs
its going to be no good.
Then there is the question of the sources being freely avalible,
licenced for sale or whatever it all is.
In quake 1, agrip do not want to buy anything so its limited to
freeware and opensource engines.
If you were asking in general, well as long as at least the sources
re avalible it will work, and even better than that if all other
conditions as above are met.
This is for universal access ofcause.
If you don't care for say more than one disability to use the game or
even normal sighted or abled users to use the game then accessibility
becomes more different, as you can make the game usable by only one
type of disability, eg the gma engine or other project.
In my opinion though the universal access is slightly harder as you
will have to search for things in addition to doing the coding, the
advantage is that with all the opensource things there is probably
something to help you along, maybe most of the way.

I happen to have a harry potter interactive fiction game called harry
potter
and the legend of the dragon. You are a first year just starting at
hogwarts
and you have to go to classes, learn spells and practice them, and solve
puzzles and the game ends when you defeat a dragon trying to take over
hogwarts. I'm very stuck in this game I can't stop a lot of my spells from
backfiring but I hope you will have more luck with it then me.

 Hi Brandon,

I've only just found the time to listen to your demo and I'm absolutely
amazed! You may have read a recent post of mine about the blind community
and being 'out there communicating the game industry and so forth. I
 think
this idea is *incredibly* valuable for the game industry becuse your demo
gives such a good insight in what a blind gamer has to go through in order
to play a PSP game. And I don't want that to sound very negative. Did you
send your link to EA Games already?

Although your archive only consists of just one demo, I really look
 forward
to your reviews and I really, really hope that more people send in their
audio reviews of mainstream computer games. This type of material is not
only very handy and fun to listen to for blind gamers who might want to
 try
and play that game as well, but it is extremely valuable *research*
 material
as well. Research is not just stuff that happens in laboratories, it is
(simple) recordings of this which provide such a good overview of what
problems there are and what solutions there are. This is exactly the type
 of
 material researchers and developers value.

I will put a link in the Resources section under 'Multimedia' :
 http://www.game-accessibility.com/index.php?pagefile=papers (you need to
scroll down because I've not yet added an anchor yet). Currently there are
only movies there, so it would be nice to have a link to some audio-only
footage as well. If you want, you can use the forum to spread the word
whenever you put more links up. I'll also put up some links to your site
 on
AudioGames.net. And I'll try to see if I can reach someone from the team
 of
EA who developed this game to listen to your recording.

 Greets,

 Richard

Re: [Audyssey] Mainstream games accessibility

2006-08-07 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, Aaron.
The only case in point where this has been tried is Audio Quake by Agrip.
What they did is get the open source copy of Quake, modified it to be
pretty accessible, and then use it to update and modify the regular
install of quake.
In order to similarly make Quake II, Quake III, Doom, etc accessible one
would need a copy of the source code to update them and make them
accessible.

[Audyssey] moosic

2006-08-07 Thread shaun everiss
Hi all.
I have run moosic, but I can't get passed the first level, I get
passed it but I can't the second.
Also how do I access the options menu and other menus.
Also on sightless02 after you have been battling the second enemy I
follow everything, I hit the left mouse button, and after a while I
can't do that any more the game begins.

So my question.
Have I died, have I won and if this is the case are their only 2
enemies in the game.
Its quite hard to shoot all the zombies in kill all zombies And in
sonar Sometimes I find I have to wait for monsters but I find it
hard to play that to.

[Audyssey] gmud

2006-08-07 Thread Chris Frahm
How in heck do I configure gmud? I got it 'cause I thought it'd be easier than
a prog like monkey term. I can't figure out how to connect to a mud. I don't
know what a trigger is, a macro, or an alias. It's all weird. Was using
telenet and liked it but I had to use jaws with pc curser and jaws cursor. Was
a drag and you had to read EVERYTHING and it was hard to keep up with live
battles.
Can someone help me on or offlist?
BTW: thank you all ofr all your previous assistance.
*smiles*

[Audyssey] thanks

2006-08-07 Thread Chris Frahm
Thank for the info on quake. Yeah I was thinking of warcraft. Always wanted
to play that game. That isn't accessable yet, huh? Is anything out there like
it? Loved the sound files.
Also, where would I get audio quake? Is it a hard learning curve? Would i
need regularquake and would that cost?
Thanks a ton!

The best place is probably the mudconnector
 http://www.mudconnect.com
If you want starwars games just click the search link, go to the entry
field
and type in star wars. There are many other muds too I think they have
 almost 1700 last I checked.
 ENjoy.

Hi, muds are multiuser dungeons. You login online to a mud game with a
mud client, and play the games via a text based interface. They have a
  DND type feel to them.

[Audyssey] jim's trucker game

2006-08-07 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen

NB: This email and its contents are subject to our email legal notice
which can be viewed at http://www.sars.gov.za/Email_Disclaimer.pdf

Hi jim

I noticed something strange with your trucker game. When I choose
oranges as cargoe, the game informs me several times that the fridge
unit in the truck is off and the oranges will damage. Each time I ran
out of fuel before I reach a truck stop and a tank of fuel is delivered
to me, the game also informs me that the fridge unit is off. When I
reached my destiny, a portion of the oranges was really damaged. IN the
game instructions as well as the special key instructions, I couldn't
find any way to turn on the fridge unit.

Is there a way to turn the fridge unit on?

Thanks

Re: [Audyssey] How does one play accessible invaders?

2006-08-07 Thread Ken the Crazy
The shields and bombs don't make noise, and in the nonvisual profile they
are disabled. The programmers are correcting these issues. To hit the
aliens, just remember to calculate lead time. If they are moving slowly to
the left, just go a bit further to the left than they are and fire. If they
are moving faster, your distance in front of them will have to increase to
hit them. Play around with the config file for a while. Therein is the key
to enjoying this game. Also, get the sound track add-on, install it, and
erase the music.conf file from the nonvisual profile. Here is my code for
the profile. Just open the old one and erase everything in it, or make a
new profile. This is for a 2-player game. The blind person is player 1 and
uses the keyboard, and the sighted player is player two and uses the mouse.
If you'd like to use the mouse for player 1 and give the keyboard to sighted
or blind player 2 then you will have to alter the settings a bit. Player 1
cannot destroy shields and be bombed. He can destroy one type of alien,
which makes an explosion sound. Player two destroys the other group, which
make a splashing sound when they die. Player 2 can destroy the shields and
be bombed, but has 5 lives. Also, when you hear the UFO entering the game,
(sci-fi.wav,) go to the far left or right and shoot. UFO movement is not
currently supported, but I believe it will be added in to the next release
as well.
Here is the game code. Remove platform.conf from the nonvisual profile as
well, or again, make an entirely new profile by copying the nonvisual
profile to a new folder named whatever you like. Erase the music and
platform conf files and modify the game.conf file so it looks like this:

I have downloaded this game but my friend ran it and it's saying something
about it needs some other files to run like Python2.4 and such. It seems
 to
be the only version at Sourceforge.net and if anyone gets this up and
running please let us know. Thanks.

You just need to be certain you download the right pysonic file for
 version
2.4. I initially had that problem too. Now, I just can't figure out how to
defeat enemies and get anywhere in the game.

It sounds like a good game, but you need three additional files. Python
 2.4,
PyGame, and PySonic. Both Python 2.4 and PyGame installed fine, but when
 I
tried to install PySonic, the installation haulted. It said it needed
Python 2.3, which was not found in the registry. I couldn't go any
 further.
If anyone has a workaround, I would be interested. Too bad this can't be
 converted to a .exe file.
