FWIW, there's a port of it on the android side where the developer also
offered a setting to offer TTS output.

Re: [Audyssey] The old text game known as adventure or colossal cave

2017-01-28 Thread Phil Vlasak

Folks,
Here is a review fromAudyssey;
Computer Games Accessible to the Blind
Issue 18: May/June/July, 1999
"Adventure 551" Reviewed by Kelly Sapergia

"Adventure", or "Colossal Cave", was one of the first text
adventure games of all time. It was first made in the late 70's.
And it's still popular with Interactive Fiction players in the
late 90's. There are numerous versions available for just about
every computer platform. Even for a lot of the Adventure Game
creation programs, like AGT, and Inform.
And now, we have a new version of the game in TADS. Welcome to
"Adventure 551"!
One thing you're probably asking yourself at this point is
"What's so good about another version of the game?" Well, this
version is based on Dave Baggett's TADS version from 1993, but
with a twist. "Adventure 551", which I'll refer to as "ADV551",
features two games in one. One is a 551 point version by Dave
Baggett (which I've never tried, unless it was in the "Colossal
Cave Revisited" game), and the normal 360 point version. You can
switch between these two games with a single command.
Another bonus is that ADV511 will let you get rid of those
annoying dwarves, and the pirate who shows up at random to steal
your treasure. That made it more fun for me to play.
I've never been able to win Colossal Cave in any form, and
this one's no exception. But that doesn't mean you can't have fun
with this game. One thing I wish the author of ADV551 could have
done was to make it easy to get through the mazes without wasting
time walking around in circles looking for the exit. That's
infuriating! But on the bright side, the game is well written,
and I'm glad I downloaded it. I'm rating it 9 out of 10.

Note from Phil: this is a free DOS game,
not a Windows game, I just posted it for those who never played it.

Why is it hard to play? I know its a difficult game, and you need to
somehow keep the layout in your head. I used to play it many decades ago,

Oh, good Lord! I haven't played that game in ages of ages. I wonder how
well using dictation would work? I'd be willing to give it a good try if
you can get it going. When using it on a DOS machine, (see how long ago

Re: [Audyssey] The old text game known as adventure or colossal cave

2017-01-28 Thread Jude DaShiell
Any of these games can be made easier if you know how to make a mapping
deck.
A mapping deck starts out with a card documenting the entrance room and
its exits.
That card gets a number on it too. Each exit on that card gets a number
too.
So the card number is unique and all exit numbers are unique. So card 1
which would be the entrance room might have hypothetically four exits
into other parts of the game say north south east and west. Each of
those exits would get a number say from 2-5.
Then move through each exit and document the room and put its card
number on each of those other cards.
Then it's a good idea to put a band around the deck or put the deck in a
bag.
If useful to document other features of rooms you may need to use 4x6 or
5x8 cards if doing it in braille.
Why to use cards and decks and not a single sheet of paper is cards can
be added to decks no problem but a single sheet of paper can run out
very quickly.
I hope this helps. This also means first few times environments get
entered and searched you do exploration missions then once you have the
lay of the land documented you'll know where to go and what to do so
then go in to actually get the quest done or win the game.

If you get the right version, yes. There's a thousand point version
which was the last expansion of the original game and I enjoyed that one
most of all. When I downloaded it I got it off compuserve when

I think you can do what you wish with this classic game; I expect to
see it on as many platforms as possible, since it is one of the best
games in existence.

I found a copy of this game out on the internet, and I can get it running as an
audio game with dictation on the iphone and ipad with a week or two of work.
Here's a wiki about the game. Many of you have probably played it - it's the

I was in the stone dragon earlier today and killed several ochre jellies.
Searching corpses got me a silver shield on the first corpse and shabby
mail on the third corpse. The second corpse offered up a strange rod I
couldn't take because I couldn't carry it at the time. My guess is that
was a key to the coffin east of the ampitheater which is why I couldn't
open that up. Morticia still lives this time. I may have gone through
that coffin or into it with a past character when that character killed
her but can't remember now. That character probably had good lockpicking
  skills.
The interesting thing about all of this is that that's the only quest in
alteraeon I've found to date that has different kinds of objects on the
same kind of monster. Thanks for doing that, it makes the game more
  interesting.

[Audyssey] Question regarding DiceWorld.

2017-01-28 Thread Gary Price

Evening everyone on this list.

It's Gary from Bolton here.

I hope this Email comes through as I've not posted on here for a few years.

I've got a question about DiceWorld on the iPhone.

I had an account on it, and I kept forgetting my password, so had to
keep resetting it!

But even though I did this, now for some reason when I try and log in
using my username, it says incorrect credentials.

So today I've created a guest user, and changed it to GaryPrice.

But when I entered my Email address, which is one for iCloud, it has
made this my username as well.

Is this a temporary account or is this now my perminant account?

See I'm no longer on Facebook, so can't use this for logging in.

Before I sign off, any tips on using this app would be appreciated as
never used it before.

I should add I use VoiceOver.

Thanks very much, I hope this Email makes sense.
