Re: [Audyssey] Monty Traler

2006-04-05 Thread Thomas Ward
I suppose that would be true if you use the y axis as front and back
instead of up and down which would be typical of most 2D games.
However, in side scrolers you are only dealing with four cardinal
directions or angles, 0, 90, 180, and 270. In a game like sod which I
believe deals with 15 degree angles the number goes from 4 to 24 angles
the character could be facing.

So the ladders or ropes can turn into bridges by thinking they are so.
It would be like a sonic optical illusion!

 Hi Mich,
I do now understand where you are coming from, but we are actually
talking about two different genres of game styles.
SOD is a FPS, First Person Shooter, and in those games you have left,
 right, forward, and back movement.
In Montezuma's Revenge it is a side-scroller. Those games only have
left, right, up, and down. No other directions. Believe it or not the
directions of the arrow keys ,make sense after a while. You use the up
and down arrow keys on ladders, ropes, trees, etc and the left and right
arrow keys when walking through the rooms. What is hard about that?
I suppose it is clear to me as I have played several side-scrollers over
the years including Mario Brothers, the original Montezuma's Revenge,
 Double Dragon, etc.

Hi Charles,
Exactly my point. The direction you want to go is equaled on the game
pad and keyboard. Changing it would be weird.

Re: [Audyssey] Monty Traler

2006-04-04 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
It does clear up what you mean. One of the whole points of this game was
to capture the original game aspect. Have you played the side scroller
level of Pipe2 Blast Chamber by BSC Games? Have you played Super Liam?
These are perfect examples of a side scroller. Think of you watching
your character on television. Think of it as a 2d image instead of a 3d
like Shades of Doom. Or even better. Imagine your character is simply
drawn on a piece of paper in front of you. You read from left to right.
This is like walking forward. If you go to the left you are moving
backwards. This way there is only a 2d sence. 2d as in two dimensional
is what I mean.

Hope this clears it up.

Mich Verrier said the following on Mon, Apr 03, 2006 at 10:30:16PM -0400:
hi ok what I meant was this in the side scroler game when you move your
character sideways across the screen using the left and right arrow keys and
you hear the sounds coming up from your left speeker either side of you and
from your right speeker as well as in frunt I find that a bit confusing
what I would rather like to see is to have the same set up but in stead use
the up and down and left and right arrow keys for moving forwerd back left
and right and so that it creates a feeling like you are walking in a
strait line and then the sounds will come up on your right and left but you
would have a better sence of derection. Like the way it is in Sod. I hope
this helps clear up what I meant if not then please let me know.

I like the idea of being able to have the option for a side scroler game

a game like it is in sod where the sounds come from right to left and
 you use the
up arrow key to walk between them I hope you get what I mean.

Hi,
Well, please remember that Monty is fully a 2D game. I would have to end
up having to add a 3D array, and drawing surfaces 3D. That would defeat
the purposes of recreating the original game.

Monty. I really liked it that you had it like it is in sod where it let's you

the ladders etc. I just liked every part of the new trailer. but if I could
make a suggestion. I like the idea of being able to have the option for a side
scroler game and possibly a game like it is in sod where the sounds come from

Can you explain this to me a little clearer? Some additional details
might help. The arrow key layout left for left, right for right up for
up, and down for down is a logical setup as it is. That is the way
side-scrollers are designed The joystick movement is the same as the
arrow keys.
