Re: [Audyssey] Self-Voicing Nethack
Hi. Thanks a lot, I will appreciate the referral. Actually, there have been some interesting developements with entombed lately, including beta testing. You can read about them (and request to beta test the game), at http://www.blind-games.com/ I'd also highly recommend the newly reopened gamebook site the Chronicals of Arborell found at: http://www.arborell.com/ They have just release a very large and complex gamebook with an interesting skills system and dungeon. also, the gm and writer of the site has contacted me about making an accessible version of the torchlight tabletop game, which essentially functions like a gamebook with a random map and monsters. at the moment the game requires you to print out and use cards, but we have been discussing creation of an accessible online html version. I'll keep the list and audiogames.net news updated with this information. In the mean time Enjoy Sryth and the other games mentioned. all the best, Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Self-Voicing Nethack
Hi Dark, Thanks for your comments. I think that Entombed may well do the trick, once he's finished with it. In the meantime I'll give Sryth a try. And I'll remember to put DarkEmpahy in the box when I see it. --Bill - Original Message - From: "Dark" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Sunday, April 13, 2008 3:52 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Self-Voicing Nethack I've tried Nethack with Hal, but run into severe troubles with the Asqi graphics, though maybe a braille display will do the trick. it's not precisely Nethack, but the recent post by Jason on this list (I believe the subject was accessible rpg game), stated that he's working on a self-voicing rpg with a random dungeon layout and other features, which might well foot the bill. You can find the long thread about his game and it's developement on the audio games.net forum at: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=2044 Also, It's not Nethack, but I was wondering if you've tried the online rpg Sryth. lots of exploration, not all about stats and pvp (it's actually single player apart from the rankings), and some interesting dungeon maps. Everything's done in text descriptions similarly to a fighting fantasy or other gamebook, accept the world is much larger, with many more monsters and quests and such, and a much more complex skill system. there are several players on the list, and I can deffinately recommend it (though I've not played myself for a while). you can find it at http://www.sryth.com/ And if you wouldn't mind writing the name darkempathy in the referral box, I'd be very much obliged ;D, assuming you like the game of course. Re: [Audyssey] Self-Voicing Nethack
One of the cool elements about the Nethack/Rogue/Moria game class is the ability for users to create new monsters to inhabit their dungeons and player races. I am thinking in particular of Zangband, the variant in which you could play Amberites out of Roger Zelazny's universe. Quests a la Angband would also be extremely cool. Re: [Audyssey] Self-Voicing Nethack
FYI: I'm making a Nethack which will be accessible to PM users, which includes graphics and, if I can learn how, sounds. I've got the sound files and the mapping options which tells the game what sounds to play, and it works fine on the PC, but the version for PPC isn't reading the sounds so I'm getting a bunch of errors. - Original Message - From: "Jason Allen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Wednesday, April 16, 2008 9:41 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Self-Voicing Nethack > Yes that's right. Indeed tom, a huge game, but that's part of the problem, betwene getting used to the game, and trying to work with aski graphics, things got a bit much I felt, hence my frustration. I think though for similar games, Jason Allan's rpg game (which I'm following developement of closely on the thread on audiogames.net), is sounding like it will have many of the elements that made nethack appealing such as randomly generated dungeon layout and creatures, though will be self-voicing as well. Hi william. glad your trying the game. Bryan peterson also did a podcast about Sryth on blind cool tech. I'm afraid I don't have the link, but you could try searching for Sryth the age of Igtheon on the blind cooltech site at http://www.blindcooltech.com/ , Bryan explains a lot of the mechanics and plays through a brief start up adventure, which might be helpful for you to know if you want to find out more abou the game. sinse the in game documentation is well and truly out of date, You could also try the official Sryth wiki at http://sryth.pbwiki.com/ hmmm, seeing your post reminds me of my old project to create a new player's guide for Sryth, maybe I ought to actually get the thing finished. Hi Ron. well, I personally don't mind a slow game, but by the time I'd examined the screen with Hal's vf, worked out where I was and what's going on, often with reference to the docs to remember what the blasted symbols mean, then looked at the command list (and possibly the players handbook), to try and decide what I was doing, a long time had passed. i'll frankly admit this got on my nerves. It's a shame someone couldn't make a basic nethack esque game, possibly even a nethack modification, where all you do is wander around the dungeon, fighting monsters, picking up weapons which are auto equipped, and healing yourself at specific locations, just so that we could practice screen readers and aski graphics. Just make that line say "noibmgraphics" and it will use all ASCII characters. Nethack is completely playable with Jaws for windows. Especially now that the autopilot is included in the game, you don't have to worry about not being able to find the staircases again once you've discovered them. That used to be a big problem since you couldn't get row and column information for locations. With the autopilot, you can simply tell your character to go to the greaterthan sign or to any plus-signs which are closed doors to explore levels. Hope that helps you get started. Hi Dark Indeed Mike came through on that command for the characters. I couldn't for the life of me remember it but knew it was a simple fix. Hate those moments. Re: [Audyssey] Self-Voicing Nethack
Hi william. yes, character creation is a pest, one advantage of being an adventurer's guild subscriber is that things are a bit freeer in this line. I suggest you just create a character, start out and see where you get. I'd advise starting out with high high scores in luck, nvr and the combat attributes, sinse these are fixed, but also make certain that you don't end up with any minus modifyers to skills sinse they can really effect how much xp you use later on. Luckily, once you've got a character, your fixed. I've had the same one now for almost three years (though I haven't been spending any quality time with her lately, which is a shame sinse I think the game'shad lots of updates). Just have a poke around and see what you find, afterall you can always restart with a different character if you don't like your beginning one, Ekitrina was actually my third attempt at character creation, and the one which came off the best. Hth, I'd deffinately advise you persevere with Sryth, sinse it's a really rewarding game. Beware the Grue! Dark. - Original Message - From: "William L. Well, I've given Sryth a decent try and I have to say I was a little disappointed. It's a little daunting to have to go through all of these buttons and screens to finally get to play. Re: [Audyssey] Self-Voicing Nethack
I had hoped that this was the case. But I seem to remember downloading Nethack and JFW couldn't read the screen correctly. Re: [Audyssey] Self-Voicing Nethack
Hi Along with Nethack which can indeed be played with JFW, the askey can be troublesome at first, there is also Ancient Domains of Mystery at http://www.adom.de Also I just discovered that it seems like a Java based game engine is being worked on. I've tried Nethack with Hal, but run into severe troubles with the Asqi graphics, though maybe a braille display will do the trick. it's not precisely Nethack, but the recent post by Jason on this list (I believe the subject was accessible rpg game), stated that he's working on a self-voicing rpg with a random dungeon layout and other features, which might well foot the bill. [Audyssey] Self-Voicing Nethack
Back when I was sighted, I spent hours playing Nethack. Is there a way to play Nethack with JAWS? And this may be a long shot, but is anyone working on a version of Nethack for the visually impaired, such as a self-voicing game?
