That's what I do. If I have the sword I'll take him on. I'll run in close, strike him a few times, then run out of the room until my strength recharges. Of course I don't bother taking him on unless I've got a potion or two to restore health since he does a lot of damage. It takes at least thirty strikes from the sword to bring him down, and the sword seems to be the most effective weapon in terms of damage. Ah okay. I wasn't sure why it didn't work right when I was trying it. Right. Now having done that, I'm stuck on one side of two fire pits. And when I line up direct with the first one, and it says 0 meters to the left, I die when I jump, because it claims there's another one seven meters away from me, same direction.
