Re: [Audyssey] speak and spell and speak and math.

2008-01-01 Thread ari
Hi Thomas,
What would be fun for you to develop for young blind kids is a game I used
to play, my mom had to read the screen, but it was called Maths Blaster.
There were different Maths puzzles, multiply, add, subtract, divide,
rounding off, fractions, etc, but the fun part was also the games. Example,
there was one when you answer a sum right, you help a little man build his
space ship to fly in, and at the end you'd hear the man walk to the ship and
the ship fly away, you'd also get a certificate, gold for perfect answers,
less colours for less answers. Then there were other games where, when you
answered enough sums you'd run around a board eating doghnuts not trying to
be caught by a baddy, and one where rubbish would fly accross the screen and
you'd have to shoot it. Maths and spelling games must be made fun for kids,
bril sound effects etc, and instead of letting them use JAWS to read it, use
fun entertaining voices like cartoons. If you could exhibit it at
conferences, I don't see why schools and stuff wouldn't buy it, but maybe it
would be a good idea to develop it with the help of teachers who can divide
up what kids of different ages would know.

2008-01-01 Thread jason
Hi, Lisa it's Jason I hope you are having a good new year, and I hope
everyone on the list is well. I also had a good christmas as well. Anyway
I remember those speaking spell and math. However I wore them out and I
accidentally plugged a wrong adapter in the speaking math which caused the
machine to burn up I was bummbed out that day. I was 10 years old then, now
I am 25. I thought the hardest level on the speaking math game was the
number stumpers. otherwise I was able to beat the speaking spell. I would
like to know that myself if there are computer versions of those games as
well.

sincerely,

 Hi Lisa,
that is hard to say. I don't know if they were available outside the
USA, but I know how I got mine. There is the Cleveland Sight Center
which services Northern Ohio, and I believe my parents got it through
them several years ago when the Speak and Spells and Speak and Maths
were still around in stores. Last time I was there for mobility training
etc they didn't have anything like that in the Sight Center's store.
They had the usual stuff you see like accessible Monopoly, Brailled Uno
cards, brailled playing cards, four track tape players, etc. So I think
those overlays were a temperary thing that was around when the units wer
popular, and died out soon after.
Now days the only places I have seen working units with a overlay like
that is at the Ohio School for the Blind , and the Canton City school
system has one in their grade school class rooms. No doubt they were
passed down from class to class for the last 20years or so.

Dane Cook is, he does a great imitation of how the Speak-N-Spell units

These little units were possessed. I mean, think of the way they sounded
when making letters. A, E, I, Oaoaoaoaoa, yiou. If you guys know who
Dane Cook is, he does a great imitation of how the Speak-N-Spell units
are possessed by the devil. Quite funny if you ask me. I looked for some
on Ebay a few months ago and they are going for around $80 each because
 they are collector's items now.

Re: [Audyssey] speak and spell and speak and math.

2007-12-31 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Hello.

Funny enough, about three years ago, I created a computer version of the
classic speak n math, including capturing all the classic sounds from an
actual speakNMath. Unfortunately, I was just learning C Sharp language, and
I got as far as creating a few levels of solve it, and number stumper, but
it was sort of working. grin I completely forgot about the project! grin I
still have all the sounds and I think I still have the c sharp code, as
sloppy is it is, hanging around here somewhere. grin

But to really answer your question, I seem to remember a speakN Spell
emulation program somewhere on the net. Try googling speak and spell
emulation.

I remember the sounds of those things. Of course i had one of the Speak

I used to purposely run the batteries flat just for this reason.
It would speed up like a tape on fast forward, then it'd make these

make these noises like tin cans being bashed together!

Re: [Audyssey] speak and spell and speak and math.

2007-12-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Well, I owned a couple of the Speak and Spells and both did extremely
different and weird things when the batteries were low. It was down
right funny if you ask me when it started going weird.
Speaking of funny Speak And Spell stories this one time I remember a
girl in my first grade class who got one out of the school library on
her library card. Well, she was toying around with it as we were walking
back to class when it accidently slipped from her hands and went flying
down a flight of stairs. Actually two flights if you countthe the
landing in the middle. In any case it was trying to prompt for a word
when it went clatter clatter down the stairs. When the girl ran down the
stairs and picked it up amazingly it still sort of worked. Except when
it tried to speak it made all kinds of goofy noises and popped and
hissed. Basically, the same sortsof weird behaviors you get when the
batteries were low except in this case it was stuck in that mode forever.

2007-12-31 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Hi Lisa,

Well, I may finish the speakNMath project, but no guarantees. At least I
still have all the recorded sounds backed up to disc. I remember it took me
two hours until I got the darn thing to say the number 13! grin

At any rate, I may finish the project, just for kicks.

 Hello.

Funny enough, about three years ago, I created a computer version of the
classic speak n math, including capturing all the classic sounds from an
actual speakNMath. Unfortunately, I was just learning C Sharp language,
 and
I got as far as creating a few levels of solve it, and number stumper,
 but
it was sort of working. grin I completely forgot about the project! grin
 I
still have all the sounds and I think I still have the c sharp code, as
sloppy is it is, hanging around here somewhere. grin

But to really answer your question, I seem to remember a speakN Spell
emulation program somewhere on the net. Try googling speak and spell
 emulation.

Re: [Audyssey] speak and spell and speak and math.

2007-12-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lisa,
that is hard to say.

Re: [Audyssey] speak and spell and speak and math.

2007-12-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lisa,
Actually, I think an accessible speak N Spell game is a good idea. It is
a pretty easy thing to make so I probably wouldn't even charge for that
kind of game. Basically, all it does is checks through a dictionary word
list at random and tests if the word you typed matches the one it
selected. Every programmer does something similar when learning to
program. String matching, word matching, is one of those fundimental
skills a programmer picks up pretty early on in education.
As it happens after I am done with Montezuma's Revenge I am going to
take some time doing research for multiplatform games so I can support
Mac and Linux based computers as well as Windows. Something like Speak N
Spell would make a nice simple game to try out and test on multiple
computers running different operating systems with little time to put it
together.
