That sounds a lot like the Alpha Centauri games or civilizations, kind of. I'd love to play more strategic simulations like that...part of why Sound RTS is so addictive to me. Hello there, Years back when i still had some sight..I loved to play a simulation type game called Outpost. Earth was going to be destroyed by a comet..and a life shipt was launched into space for a long flight to a new world. when you got to the solar system you selected..you could launch probes to see which planet was best for landing. Once you landed..you had a set amount of equipment you could use to work on your new city/base. diggers to dig mines and tunnels for underground dwellings. bulldozers to flatten ground for future building. a smelter to make metals from what you dug up. robot tractors/trucks to move materials from one site to another. as the colony grew..you could expand north/south/east/west/down. as you had more materials in your storage warehouses..you could build more robot trucks/living quarters/agriculture domes/schools/science labs/smelters/radio towers to control robots for further distances..etc. ultimately you wished to bring the colony technology up to the point you could launch another starship to colonize further. you faced diseases/colony unrest/disasters/loss of resources/etc. the games had lots of graphics..but all low resolution. I often thought this would be an awesome game to go all sound/voice with. this game was played over/days/months..not a single sitting. it was very addictive. a later version of this game thru in more things to work with/combat..like alien civilizations. Re: [Audyssey] Huge gaming news!
There's a huge, huuuge difference between the kinds of games you're thinking of and the kind of games sim city and GalCiv 2 are in. You're thinking the type of games where its all online play focusing on PVP, with a very limited amount of resources and buildings and the like. These types of games not only are not just text, they have full sound effects and the like, which is a massive bonus already, plus there's so much more you can do with them. There's a reason games like Sim City and GalCiv 2 are a lot more popular than text stat crunchers like The Five Pillars and Utopia, *grins*. Just my two cents, hope you don't take offense. - Original Message - From: Dark [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Tuesday, January 15, 2008 6:03 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Huge gaming news! I agree, The text ones are just borring web browser stuff you just click through, sims is really million times deeper. Even with games like Battrick and so on, I find it difficult to carry on being thrilled, I'm sure most, if not all of us would rather play the football, cricket and strategy management games that are sold commercially which have bril sounds and music as well as online playability. The reason why so many internet stuff is still text-based is probably because for many people the net is too slow or propper online gaming is difficult to implement, but sadly the future of online games is really moving towards fast virtual environments like Second Life which are inaccessible. There is now even a virtual online sports game, nearly like second life, where you control the life of a sportsman, not just playing sports, you also sort out his finances, buy cars for him, date, get points to be allowed in more fashionable nightclubs, etc, and most people with no accessibility worries would rather play those, so would I, but of course that's not possible without sighted help at the moment. Re: [Audyssey] Huge gaming news!
Uhm, I hate to say this, but to make Sim City even remotely playiable by the blind would be one hell of a task. I've played all of the Sim City games before I went blind. And I just don't see it being done for the blind, Unless, you do it some what like Sound RTS, but to set up the square system and then not to mention to place drain pipes, Power lines, and leveling the ground so you can build onto it would be one heck of a task to program. But, hey if somebody wants to tackle such a task I'm all for them, just don't ever seeing it happen. Agreed. I've been wanting to play a sims game. The source code is all here, all a developer would really have to do is go through it and put in accessibility features. It would be awesome. Perhaps not as easy as I made it sound but I think it's dooable. - Original Message - From: ian mcnamara [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, January 14, 2008 10:45 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Huge gaming news! that sounds cool i would love to play this kind of game and i am looking foward to some one working on it if someone is willing to do it. - Original Message - From: ari [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, January 14, 2008 3:22 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Huge gaming news! Hi all, If some developers can work on this, this could be a huge success and project for blind gamers, as it will open up a type of game to us. Maybe some developers could contact the olpc and arrange something? Re: [Audyssey] Huge gaming news!
I agree, this would be awesome. And sound RTS has already proved that RTS games can be made perfectly accessible to the blind. I think this would make a great future project. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org.
