Hi Tyler,

No, no video in Strip War, just descriptions of the clothing and of the bodies
of the bots as they become naked. And there are 150 sound clips, some of live
sex and others of funny sexual sounding clips from such TV shows as Married
With Children, Son of the Beach etc.

Hi Jim,

Yes, you can still search for a part of a file name, and of course you
can use wildcard characters like a star to substitute for letters and
numbers that might change such as foot*.wav to search for all the
sounds from foot0.wav to foot25.wav etc. If you bring up Windows
Search with Windows+f you can tab to the directory tree view and
select which directory to begin searching etc. So I'd say the same
functionality is there in newer versions of Windows but it is slightly
different from XP and earlier.

Hi Thomas,

Cool, thanks, I'm glad to hear that you can still use the Windows search

My Jaws does not read it to me, but I was told that on Google a couple of lines below
the edit field it is guessing and auto completing while you are typing. Kind of
unsettling when it seems like it heard what you were talking about and now are

But it sounded to me that is some what what the Windows 7 search feature is

Hi Shaun,

That may be, but let's think of a constructive way to help Jim out
besides rewriting all his games in something else other than VB 6. I
agree we as a community really do need to move away from legacy
programming languages and technologies long term, but for the moment
there are things we can do to help Jim make his games more compatible
with newer operating systems besides a complete rewrite. Having Jim
save log files, games, etc to the user's documents folder is one way
of fixing some issues with UAC without rewriting each and every game
from scratch.

Cheers!

ok, ok if those that know know what files were active in the support

 still.
having the winzip sfx files well you could argue about all that.
Anyway, you wouldn't need any complex innosetup scripts for
everything, the main installer and the rest well.
how I'd invision it working are the games in some type of module file
 and then installing them.
right now with xp vista and 7 its probably ok and 8 to but eventually well.
Most of the innosetups stuff is made by the wizzard you can compile
the basic script yourself no issue via the menus, for a dev you only
need to add in extra stuff you don't really need to write the entire
stuff since 99% of all programming is done by the wizzard.

Re: [Audyssey] Strip War

2013-05-31 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

Thank you, maybe some would not say that I am weird, but I'm sure that other's might
argue with you. grin

You know when I started teaching myself programming variable names were limited
to two characters. And there was no hard or floppy drive available for that
computer. I had to buy a cable to connect it to a cassette tape recorder. I
did learn hexadecimal code so that I could define the eight by eight grid block
ASCII character sets and then put those blocks on the screen so as to draw
things. That was fun, but it is so much more fun now to be able to play and
move multiple sound files, use the text to speech engine etc. Do wish though
that I had better math skills etc...

Right now I on the desk top press c and enter, cm and enter, d and enter. C is
my short cut icon to the command prompt. Cm changes to my mail archive folder.
D does, dir /-n /od.  So at the bottom of the screen it reads;

thomaswa txt 1,499,790 05/31/2013 10:27 AM
   4547 File(s)264,731,769 bytes
  2 Dir(s) 18,240,888,832 bytes free
C:\mailarch

So that is one of the mail archive files that I have for you. And that is the last file written to that folder because I am writing to you and it first archived what you wrote. I do that some times to see if a person that I am responding to has written me before. Instead of cm above, I type gobas and see at the bottom of the screen the last files that I worked on in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VB98

I just like seeing the file name, size, date and time.

I guess that I just have never liked the way that Windows lists files better
than the way that dos did. Some times though I do use /w or /b or do not use
the /-n with the dir command so as to see the full long names of files.

Better say sorry for such a long rambling post.

Hi Jim,

Sounds to me like you are a tried and true Dos fan. While I grew up
with Dos in the 80's and early90's I still prefer the ease of use of
the Windows GUI as I don't have to type various commands like cls,
del, dir, and so on. However, as I said before I think this is
personal preference.

I know, for example, there are some people on the Linux Speakup
mailing list that do not use Gnome and the other graphical desktops
for exactly the same reasons. Many of them started out in MS Dos and
then switched to the Linux command line because it offered them an
environment they were comfortible with such as typing ls to list the
files in a directory, cp to copy a file, mv to move a file, rm to
delete/remove a file, etc. If asked they would say that text based
apps like the Nano text editor, the Lynx web browser, media players
like mpg123 were easier to use than their graphical counterparts.
While I might disagree with them it really comes down to their
personal preference and what they are use to.

Bottom line, I don't think such people are weird just different. I
think the same of your use of old Dos bat files etc. You aren't weird
just different.

Cheers!

Hi Thomas,

I think that my favorite part of the Windows GUI, is the, desk top. You know
just press a letter or number to run a program or do something. Of course I
did the same thing in dos with a batch file or series of batch files.

I do find the Windows find feature very useful, you know to find a file on a
drive and or specific path on a drive.

And batch files do cut way down on the repetitive typing for doing command
prompt type tasks.

Guess that I do like to use a combination of the GUI, and the command prompt.

So I would be very disappointed if they ever took the command prompt and batch

Re: [Audyssey] Strip War

2013-05-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Oh, I love the Windows search features. Especially, in Windows 7 and
Windows 8 as it is actually better than prior versions of Windows like
XP.

For example, I can just open the start menu with control+escape, type
notepad into the search field, press enter and load notepad without
even going through the Start Menu to launch the program. Any file or
program I want to run just type it into Windows Search and Windows
runs it.

Of course, in Windows 8 with its all new Metro interface there is no
Start Menu and the Start Screen is a bit confusing for a new user. So
the Windows Search feature especially comes in handy. Instead of
hunting through the icons i the Start Screen you can just type the
name of a file, icon, or program into the Start Screen and Windows
will display a list of matches or load the default program etc. So
Windows Search is awesome.

Although, the desktop is something I miss in Windows 8. In prior
versions of Windows you could copy icons etc to your desktop, but in
Windows 8 the desktop is nothing more than a place to display your
pictures. In other words for a visually impaired user the desktop in
Windows 8 is pretty much useless, and now the equivalent to using the
desktop is pinning apps to your Taskbar.

The Command Prompt is still around, but there are restrictions on what
files and folders you can access based on user permissions. If you
load cmd with full admin rights you canaccess just about anything, but
if not then you will get an error to the effect you don't have the
proper permissions to access x, y, or z.

Cheers!

Hi Phil,

Again I thank you for the code and for testing that little newpaths program.
But the code, and newpaths, program were just for having my games write their
text files to the documents\kitchensinc folder, not installing the games.

Truthfully I don't even know where games should go in Windows 98, XP, Vista, 7
and 8. And if there is an installer that would work for them all, lets see, I
would need to start with winkit to install the game menu system and then change
all of my games all at once to go to the new, game menu system folder. When I
started the whole game menu system thing, one thing that it did was to save me
at least a meg per game install as the self extracting zip files do not include
all of the files that the winkit install does. And I do very much still like
all of my games under one game menu launcher system thing.

2013-05-30 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Jim,
I thought you were going to move all your games to be inside the documents
folder under kitchensinc, so that is what I did.
I moved all your files in that folder and by editing the kitchens inc games
item in my programs list to point to the correct place, all of them play
fine in that folder.
I know it would take lots of re-writing your installers to get all of your
games to install there but it might help in the long run.

Hi Phil,

Again I thank you for the code and for testing that little newpaths
program. But the code, and newpaths, program were just for having my
games write their text files to the documents\kitchensinc folder, not
installing the games.

Truthfully I don't even know where games should go in Windows 98, XP,
Vista, 7 and 8. And if there is an installer that would work for them
all, lets see, I would need to start with winkit to install the game menu
system and then change all of my games all at once to go to the new, game
menu system folder. When I started the whole game menu system thing, one
thing that it did was to save me at least a meg per game install as the
self extracting zip files do not include all of the files that the winkit
install does. And I do very much still like all of my games under one
game menu launcher system thing.

Using something like winzip as a extractor would just be a change in

Re: [Audyssey] Strip War

2013-05-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim and all,

I can answer that question. Generally speaking on all 32-bit versions
of Windows your programs would go in a folder like
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc
and all yourdata files would go in a place like
c:\Documents and Settings\User Name\App Data\Kitchensinc.

However, on newer 64-bit versions of Windows such as Vista, Windows 7,
and Windows 8 those paths are totally different. Older 32-bit programs
go in
c:\Program Files (x86)\Kitchensinc
while the data for themshould go in
c:\Users\User Name\App Data\Kitchensinc.

That said, you can do what I do and just install the games locally in
a folder like
c:\Users\User Name\Kitchensinc
which will make them UAC compliant, and user specific just by
installing them locally rather than system wide. Its a hack, of
course, but works. :D

yeah I use 7zip
I didn't care for winzip's registration system having to basically
buy another version every time you upgraded!
for a while I cracked it but after I started using other networks
for admin and the ribbons in winzip came along I realised that it was
becoming tiresum.

I had to 1 get wizip from a torrent or the download.
2. find a cradck serial.
3. load it.
by chance people someone anyway recomended 7zip and I don't know why
I even used winzip now.
its free and fast and to be honest if you are going to use an
extracter in anything 7zip has the speed it can also create a few
filetypes for different oses including linux rpm and tarball gzip packages.
its cross platform and small and can run on just about any os in
existance even win98-95 and probably earlier.

2013-05-30 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Phil,

Guess that I am still thinking about it. I mean the first thing that I would
need to do is to make a new install of my winkit. You know so that it still
installed the VB6 run time libraries, the sapi dll etc. But install the game
menu program to the c:\users\your name folder or whatever it is for that
version of Windows. And then probably buy the new program that makes WinZip
self extracting zip files if it can unzip to something like %appdata% or what
ever would put the files in the same folder as the new winkit install did.

Hi Thomas,

Thank you. I just wonder if there is an installer that would replace my winkit
and do all that it does plus install my game menu and game of life to where you
said that it belongs and then have self extracting zip files that would also be
able to find that folder.

But I thought that having the games write their files to documents\kitchensinc
would allow the games to run no matter where they were installed since I was
told that Windows does not let them be written to program files\kitchensinc.

Thanks again.

- Original Message -
Hi Jim and all,

I can answer that question. Generally speaking on all 32-bit versions
of Windows your programs would go in a folder like
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc
and all yourdata files would go in a place like
c:\Documents and Settings\User Name\App Data\Kitchensinc.

However, on newer 64-bit versions of Windows such as Vista, Windows 7,
and Windows 8 those paths are totally different. Older 32-bit programs
go in
c:\Program Files (x86)\Kitchensinc
while the data for themshould go in
c:\Users\User Name\App Data\Kitchensinc.

That said, you can do what I do and just install the games locally in
a folder like
c:\Users\User Name\Kitchensinc
which will make them UAC compliant, and user specific just by
installing them locally rather than system wide. Its a hack, of
course, but works. :D

Hi Curt,

Thank you very much for saying so.

You know, I am like really old. I do not like using the my documents, my
computer or Windows Explorer. The XP find feature works better for me. You
know as long as the folder that you want to search is not to deep. But way
more often I use the command prompt. Again it is a pain if the folder is many
folders deep or has convoluted names. But in that case, if I think that I will
want to go there again, I make a batch file to do that. And then I have batch
files that lists the folder in the format that I want at the time. You know
like the old eight by three file name format, then size, and then date. And
list by size or date etc. For me that is just faster and easier and gives me
the information that I am looking for. Guess that I am just old and weird like
that.

Re: [Audyssey] Strip War

2013-05-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Smile. I wouldn't call you weird just set in your ways. I had wondered
why you gave your file names something short like winswar4.exe when
most people now days would pick a more explanatory file name like
Strip-War-4.exe . However, now that I know you always use the old Dos
8 letter naming conventions that makes more sense. Although, Windows
hasn't been restricted to the 8 letter restrictions for years. I
believe they did away with that in Windows 95.

As far as using the My Documents and other personal folders in your
situation it probably comes down to personal choice, but on newer
Windows versions you wouldn't get that choice. Windows is becoming
more like Linux and other Unix variants where all of your personal
files go in your local user directory and saving files to anywhere
else is restricted by User Account Control and various read and write
permissions. So it would probably a good idea to eventually learn
where everything goes if you ever intend on migrating to a new PC
running something newer than XP.

As for myself I always use the personal directories provided by
Windows 7 such as My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, My Videos, etc
as it keeps everything nice and organized. Plus if I ever need to do a
quick backup or recovery all I have to do is grab my c:\Users
directory and I get everything all at once rather than having to hunt
all over creation to figure out if my books are in c:\Books, my notes
are in c:\Notes, my music in c:\Music, etc which is not only messy but
I can't just grab it all at once and do a daily or weekly backup of
the master Users directory and I have to hunt around and copy each
folder one by one.

Plus as you know I mainly use Linux not Windows these days so I am
quite familiar with the habit of using the proper personal directories
provided for their use. On Linux the user's documents, music, etc goes
in /home/user name/ and on Ubuntu, for example, they already have
various subdirectories such as Documents, Music, Videos, Pictures, and
Downloads in your user directory so it doesn't take a rocket scientist
to figure out where personal files should go. I am personally glad
Windows follows this convention as it makes finding things, for me at
least, a breeze.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Strip War

2013-05-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Correct. Newer versions of Windows, especially Windows 8, won't allow
you to save log files etc to c:\Program Files and c:\Program Files
(x86) because of the read, write, and execute permissions on those
directories. Windows 8, in particular, gives an error whenever one of
your games like Baseball tries to write a baseball log to c:\Program
Files (x86)\Kitchensinc. So the saved games and log files have to go
somewhere else like the My Documents directory rather than being
written to the Program Files directories.

As for an installer that does what Winkit does that's totally
possible. There are several options from the free utilities like Inno
Setup to commercial installers like Microsoft AdvancedSetup Installer.
I think Advanced Setup Installer is overkill in your case as you have
no need to handle .NET components and things like that. Inno Setup is
both free and simple to use, and I could probably write up a script
that does what Winkit does that properly detects the correct install
location and puts the icons where they go.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Strip War

2013-05-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

No, Winzip and Winzip Self-extractor can't be used that way. All you
can do is give them a default location and have the end user specify
where to put files if the default location is wrong. This is where a
scripted setup and installer program like In no Setup comes in handy
because you can create environment variables that allows you to
extract that information from the user's registry and set his or her
local directories as the default if desired.

This is especially important on non-English releases of Windows,
because the directory names will change depending on language making
it impossible for you to guess where files go, and need to extract
that information from the user's local registry during install time.

Cheers!

File name; winswar3.exe File size 21 meg.

Strip War is an X rated adult card game where you choose to play strip war,
strip poker or strip black jack against 3 computer bots, or against other
human players. (which you provide.
In version 3 I fixed the bug where the comments toggle did not work when
playing black jack against bots.
The game should now write text files such as the striplog.txt file to your
documents\kitchensinc folder.

Have fun.

BFN

To unzip all files in winStripwar4.exe to the Unzipspecified folder press

2013-05-29 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Trouble,
I know and that is what I did. Jim is working to make the installer
automatically put the files in,

c:\users\Name\documents\kitchensink
rather than the incorrect for Vista and newewr,
c:\program files\kitchensing
He sent me a test installer that did just ahtt.
But the new installer didn't do it correctly.
I had removed my
c:\program files\kitchensinc
folder before trying to install the new game.

Re: [Audyssey] Strip War

2012-04-24 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Curt,

winwar.exe is the strip war game install file. It should not be put in the
kitchensinc folder. The kitchensinc folder is where the winwar.exe self
extracting zip file would unzip the strip war files to. Then the game file
name is stripwar.exe.

But if when trying to run the winwar.exe file to install the game and you get
the message that it is not a valid application, I think that means that you did
not run it as administrator.

I hope that helps.
