In terms of the physical boards, I have a peg type one, with the points on the
black pieces. Mine is pretty big so keep it set up, but I have heard there are
travel sets for the blind as well. I’ve never been any good at the computer
version fo chess games, since I’m used to looking at the board to find where
the pieces are. Blind chess sets can be rather interesting to try and play
with sighted people, because sometimes the pieces don’t look anything like a
standard set. I did have someone try and mark up a normal set once, but it
didn’t work too well, since it wasn’t easy to distinguish between the black and
white squares and the bumpons kept falling off the appropriate pieces.

Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind

2014-06-27 Thread dark
My personal advice would be to get a tactile chess set (sometimes called a
braille chess set, even though they don't have braille on them), and start
playing live against a human.

To explain these are sets where there are holes in each square on the board
and the peaces are on pegs so you can put your mits on the board without
knocking them over, one side (usually the white, though not always), has
pins on the top to tell them apart. I'm not sure where you'd get one from in
your part of the world, they tend to be sold by the same places who sell
braille cards, dice etc.

Personally, while I understand chess notation, I find it near impossible to
hold spacial information about the board in mind without the board. I want
to put my hand on the white knight and my other finger on the square it will
move to, and then put my fingers (and to a very much lesser extent my
disfunctional eyeballs), on the surrounding squares and see if that move
will be a bad or good one.

This is why I've never got on with the various audio Chess games like
BGChess challenge, Kchess elite etc. Sinse while they have some good audio
overviews for the board, fundamentally you are still just getting the
information square by square, and I don't find myself able to old enough
spacial information about the board in mind for that sort of overview to
really help me or make it possible for me to play chess.

Of course this is me, and I will freely admit my spacial coordination is
pretty cruddy, (even in mobility I tend to substitute routes and land mark
memory instead of working out where I am spacially), you might be different
though I'm guessing by your comment you could be in a similar position,
hence my suggestion of a tactile chess set.

Beware the grue!

Well the Hadley School for the Blind offers two free chess courses, Chess

chess set with the first course which is yours to keep after you complete
it. Each course has I believe six lessons, each with an accompanying
assignment. The chess set is really nice as well. I still have mine from
eight years ago, though I don't play so much these days.

year of membership to an online Chess community for completing both of the
two Ches courses offered by the Hadley School here in the US. Their chess
set, which is included with their beginner's course, is really nice. It not
only has the pegs and holes for easy piece placement and the pins denoting
white and black pieces (in this case I believe it's the black ones), but the
board is also brailled. The white side says wite and the other black, but
the ranks and files are also denoted with letters and numbers.

to hold spacial information about the board in mind without the board. I
want to put my hand on the white knight and my other finger on the square
it will move to, and then put my fingers (and to a very much lesser extent
my disfunctional eyeballs), on the surrounding squares and see if that
move will be a bad or good one.

Of course this is me, and I will freely admit my spacial coordination is
pretty cruddy, (even in mobility I tend to substitute routes and land mark
memory instead of working out where I am spacially), you might be
different though I'm guessing by your comment you could be in a similar
position, hence my suggestion of a tactile chess set.

My personal advice would be to get a tactile chess set (sometimes called a
braille chess set, even though they don't have braille on them), and start
 playing live against a human.

To explain these are sets where there are holes in each square on the
board

and the peaces are on pegs so you can put your mits on the board without
knocking them over, one side (usually the white, though not always), has
pins on the top to tell them apart. I'm not sure where you'd get one from

Well the Hadley School for the Blind offers two free chess courses, Chess
for Beginners and Chess: Principles and Strategies. You even get a free
chess set with the first course which is yours to keep after you complete
it. Each course has I believe six lessons, each with an accompanying
assignment. The chess set is really nice as well. I still have mine from
eight years ago, though I don't play so much these days.

Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind

2014-06-27 Thread Jeremy Brown
Keith,

There's two forms of notation. Algebraic notation is easier to
fathom. In algebraic the files are lettered a through h from White's
queen's rook right to white's King's rook. The ranks are then
numbered from 1 to 8 counting from white's first rank. So a move of
pawn e2-e4 is king's pawn from 2 to 4.

As to playing, there are, or were several board game producers for the
blind producing peg style chessboards for the blind that used
alternating raised and depressed squares to represent the color, and
that had pins or bumps on the black pieces to distinguish them from
the white. I have such a board and it works well as you can look at
board position without messing up the pieces.

I hope this helps,

Jeremy

Although it is pricy, you can get a very well made tactual chess set from

www.thechesshouse.com

The pieces are tournament sized. I believe the set costs around $100.

that sounds like a really good chess set bryan. Sinse the old one I used
to own pretty much died due to lack of use (several peaces depegged), I
tried buying a new one from the Rnib however i was quite disappointed.
The peaces are tiny, however instead of black and white it's more like
dark brown and slightly lighter brown (the contrast is quite horrible),
and the peaces are extremely small and lumpy.

nice. It not only has the pegs and holes for easy piece placement and the
pins denoting white and black pieces (in this case I believe it's the

My personal advice would be to get a tactile chess set (sometimes called
a
braille chess set, even though they don't have braille on them), and
start

playing live against a human.

To explain these are sets where there are holes in each square on the
board

and the peaces are on pegs so you can put your mits on the board without
knocking them over, one side (usually the white, though not always), has
pins on the top to tell them apart. I'm not sure where you'd get one
from in

your part of the world, they tend to be sold by the same places who sell
braille cards, dice etc.

Personally, while I understand chess notation, I find it near impossible
to
hold spacial information about the board in mind without the board. I
want
to put my hand on the white knight and my other finger on the square it
will

move to, and then put my fingers (and to a very much lesser extent my
disfunctional eyeballs), on the surrounding squares and see if that move
will be a bad or good one.

This is why I've never got on with the various audio Chess games like
BGChess challenge, Kchess elite etc. Sinse while they have some good
audio

overviews for the board, fundamentally you are still just getting the
information square by square, and I don't find myself able to old enough
spacial information about the board in mind for that sort of overview to
really help me or make it possible for me to play chess.

Of course this is me, and I will freely admit my spacial coordination is
pretty cruddy, (even in mobility I tend to substitute routes and land
mark
memory instead of working out where I am spacially), you might be
different

though I'm guessing by your comment you could be in a similar position,
hence my suggestion of a tactile chess set.

I wanted to learn chess with a computer game, but their really isn't a
program catered for the beginner. Even KChess, which claims to be for
beginners, it doesn't teach chess, only can give hints. I know the moves,
but I don't know any tactics. The sighted community has an excellent game
called Chessmaster, which is totally inaccessible. It teaches the moves,
tactics, strategies, nearly everything. I have heard that you can get
Talking Chess Computers which teach chess, but does anyone know of an
accessible model? My friend bought one from America, but can't use it
because even though it speaks it doesn't speak the computers moves, just
lights them up on the display.
Someone asked about online chess, I think Winboard for JFW allows a person
to play online.

I bought KChess Elite myself, but they have different versions at

The guys in the chess parlor on FTP are very helpful for the beginner

You can use the KChess program to keep track of moves if you play against
someone online, but I highly reccomend you get a chess set for the blind
from Ann Morris, or any other vendor of blind products, as having a board
 in
front of you allows you to feel the pieces and get a good overview of the
 board.
There are also chess lessons in audio format out there that you can track

  Good luck,
