Maybe if you could poison your arrows with the Hydra's blood the way
Heracles did. That was how he killed Ladon. Admittedly I don't know if Hydra
poison would be strong enough to take out a dragon and even if it was you
might have to fill it so full of arrows it'd probably look like a porcupine.
But that was how Heracles is said to have killed Ladon when he went to fetch
the Golden Apples. Of course in Battle of Olympus I'm sure Ladon was just a
stronger version of the Hydra, one which flew rather than swimming in water.
You also had to fight a Centaur to enter one of the caves, although
admittedly if you were quick you could run past him and get inside without
taking too much of a beating.

Hi Bryan,

Yeah, in Battle of Olympus the Ladon was basically just a stronger
version of the Hydra, and of course it could fly. Although, the Hydra
was fairly easy to beat, because it only took 8 hits from the staff to
kill which was sort of lame. The Ladon took something like 20 which
was more like it. The Minotaur took 32 which doesn't make a lot of
sense since i would have thought the Ladon was a tougher enemy to
kill.

Anyway, as for creating poison arrows I don't know. That adds
complexity both to programming and to the game. I'm hoping to think of
something easier and more simple for that situation.

Good one. LOL. My guess would be a corssbow or something along those lines
since in my experience the dragon's weak point is often too small for a
sword blade to effectively reach, whereas a crossbow bolt might be able to
do the trick. My first thought was a club since that was Heracles' weapon of
choice if memory serves, but I rather quickly discarded that idea since
dragons weren't usually vulnerable in the head. THey were usually most
vulnerable in the chest or throat area if I remember right. Granted a Hydra

Hi Bryan,

A real dragon? Ok, the only real dragon that I know of is actually just a giant
lizard, the Kammoto dragon. Which of course does not breathe fire and is not
magical. Don't even believe that it has scales.

Sorry, just saying...

BFN

- Original Message -
That would agree with the Harry Potter books as well since Sirius tells
Harry that dragons are most vulnerable in the eyes. That would seem to hint
at a javelin or spear or maybe even a dirk, something that would let you
attack from further away. Granted if it was a dirk you'd probably need to
have several on hand since if the first blow wasn't fatal you'd need to land
several more. And now I'm suddenly reminded of the Dragonlance novels since
the Dragonlance was probably one of the only weapons, and I don't remember
many others, with any hope of penetrating a dragon's scales. Granted if you
were fighting a real dragon keeping your distance wouldn't be a complete
protection since they can breathe fire and at quite a distance if my memory
serves. You could avoid that if you were quick enough though I suppose.

Re: [Audyssey] down the wrong track? - Re: MOTA Beta 16 Released!

2010-11-11 Thread Phil Vlasak

My vote is for,
Greek Fire
the secret weapon of the Eastern Roman Emperors. It is said to have been
invented by a Syrian Engineer, one Callinicus, a refugee from Maalbek, in
the seventh century (673 AD). The liquid fire was hurled on to the ships
of their enemies from siphons and burst into flames on contact. As it was
reputed to be inextinguishable and burned even on water, it caused panic and
dread.

Both Arab and Greek sources agree that it surpassed all incendiary weapons
in destruction. The secret behind the Greek fire was handed down from one
emperor to the next for centuries. Rumors about its composition include such
chemicals as liquid petroleum, naphtha, burning pitch, sulphur, resin,
quicklimeand bitumen, along with some other secret ingredient. The exact
composition, however, remains unknown.

Re: [Audyssey] down the wrong track? - Re: MOTA Beta 16 Released!

2010-11-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Hayden,

Well, the Ladon and the Hydra were both Greek versions of dragons so
we can assume they are at least dragonlike. The Hydra had a number of
abilities like the ability to breath fire, another head could freeze
you to death, and it also could breath out poison to poison you to
death. Kind of like a dragon with some very nasty extra bilities. So
we can assume it probably had scales although nothing is really said
one way or another in the 12 trials of Hercules.

The Ladon on the other hand is more of a triditional dragon. We see it
featured in Jason and the Argonaughts, and from the movie's
point-of-view it is more of a triditional dragon. Although, the actual
Greek legend describes it simply as a giant serpant that breaths
fire. So with a lot of these things the actual nature of the creature
is open to some interpretation.

For example, in the classic NES game, Battle of Olympus, one of your
tasks is to defeat a Hydra. The way you actually kill/defeat it is
totally different from Hercules method. You get a magic staff that
shoots fire, and you use the staf to hit and burn the creature to
death. Kind of strange, but no other weapon in the game has much
effect on it.

However, In Battle of Olympus the Nemean Lion is more true to the
actual one Hercules faught. You can't kill it with swords, nives,
fire, or anything else. You basically just have to beat it to death
with the club.Although, Hercules actually knocked it out with the club
and strangled it to death, but that is a small and miner deviation
from the story.

Here is another example. In Titan Quest one of the major boss battles
involves a conflict between you and the tthree gorgon sisters,
Euryale, Medusa, and Stheno. Now, strictly speaking the only reason
Medusa could be slane is she got crosswise with Athena, and Athena
turned Medusa into a mortal. Her other sisters, Euryale and Stheno,
were immortals and could not be slane by any mortal blade. Titan Quest
seams to overlook that fact and you can pretty much take out all three
with standard weaponry. No special weapons etc needed. Vidio games and
movies do this kind of thing all the time to balance out difficulty.
If you had to actually battle two immortals with standard weaponry
then obviously it would end up in a slotter with you on the losing
side.

you to death, and it also could breath out poison to poison you to

If you had to actually battle two immortals with standard weaponry
then obviously it would end up in a slotter with you on the losing
side.

Good one. LOL. My guess would be a corssbow or something along those lines
since in my experience the dragon's weak point is often too small for a
sword blade to effectively reach, whereas a crossbow bolt might be able to

dragons weren't usually vulnerable in the head. THey were usually most

As you already know a Hydra can't be defeated by lopping off its heads

Probably not. I don't think bullets would be able to punch through a
dragon's scales and probably not even the softer hide underneath. Dragons
are probably too powerfully magical for that. If we're talking fighting from
a distance I'd put my money on either an enchanted bow, a crossbow a
javelin/lance or posibly even shurakin, something small that could be
obtained in plenty and thrown with a high degree of speed. Granted Shurakin
are probably so small that they probably wouldn't be able to do much more
than irritate a dragon, sort of like a human being bitten by a fly or a
mosquito. Not particularly harmful unless of course you happened to have an
allergy. I imagine throwing a Shurakin into a dragon's eye would be no more
deadly to it than a bug bite generally would be to us.

Hi,

Sorry, to say you guys are barking up the wrong tree. There is

As you already know a Hydra can't be defeated by lopping off its heads

just take a swing at its hide with a sword, enchanted or not, because
its body is covered in scales. However, like a dragon a Hydra has one

much resistance to throw or shoot anything. The laws of physics are
just against you. Bows and crossbows aren't very good under water.

Hi,

You are getting warmer. Although, you are wrong about the eyes. Yes,
it is true you could harm a dragon by blinding it, but Hydras don't
work that way. They have multiple heads and multiple eyes. Anything
you cut off or cut will heal quickly. So going for its eyes would
likely just get it angry at you, and it will have you for breakfast.

about that... being chinese, I know the myths and legends chinese
people have about dragons... and they always talk about the eyes...
that seems to be the point where a lot of chinese heroes defeated
dragons was by stabbing them in the eye or whatnot.

There is
something else in the game you have to find, and I'm not going to tell
you what it is.

As you already know a Hydra can't be defeated by lopping off its heads
without using a torch to burn the necks shut. Of course, you can't do
that underwater and without an extra person to help. Neither can you
just take a swing at its hide with a sword, enchanted or not, because
its body is covered in scales. However, like a dragon a Hydra has one
spot that is pretty vulnerable if you can get to it. That's all I'm
going to say.

P.S.

The Greeks were a master of this weapon, and used it ffar more than
swords, daggers, and other weapons.

Cheers!
