[Audyssey] 10 years of IGDA Game Accessibility Special Interest Group Survey at GDC
Hi guys, This year I'll be attending the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, where I'll be participating in a Panel Discussion on the subject of 10 years of game accessibility. Here's a description of what it will be about: *quote* In the ten years that the IGDA's accessibility group has been running we have seen many advances in the field, with awareness growing, and more and more developers considering accessibility for gamers with disabilities. But there's a long way to go, with work still needed to remove barriers in areas such as hardware, software, third party tools, online communities, education and policy. We will be taking a retrospective of some of the key achievements and developments over the past ten years, and with your input, also look at the next important areas to focus on, providing a roadmap of how all of us can help the industry move towards greater inclusion, allowing the entertainment and quality of life benefits of gaming to reach even wider audiences. *quote end* For this Panel session we would love your input! We have designed a tiny survey (just 4 questions!) on your view of the past 10 years of accessible gaming, as well as a possible way forward. We kindly request everyone to please take 5 minutes to fill in this survey. The results will be presented on the 5th of March during the Panel Discussion, as well as in a printed hand-out. Of course we will share the results through this list too! Please use the following link to access the survey: http://goo.gl/forms/fp7rSOZldR Should you be in the vicinity of San Francisco in the week of the 2nd of March and you would like to meet up with members of the GA-SIG, gamers and other GA-enthusiasts, check out the following schedule: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/gdc-accessibility-drinks-tickets-15589776441 Thank you very very much for filling out the survey! Re: [Audyssey] The Ensign game questions
Hi Sylvester. As I remember, you do need to get the hull at %100, though you can upgrade it more after that, however if you look at the ship you'll get a good idea whether you can lift off or not, it'll glow blue when it's ready. As to the upgrades you can buy, yes, each one takes up 10 weight in your inventory so you can have a limited amount, especially next to your weapons and food. I believe I finished the game with one of each type, but it's nice to have a use for all tha inventory space on the convoy, sinse back in a dark room it didn't really serve a purpose, also it keeps the hunt for alien alloy interesting. Btw, for a particular special, go and visit the general back at the swamp after you have found one particularly unique event that ties The Ensign back to the plot of A dark room. Did I miss an item? Also one question about Eyes, health meley. Do these upgrades cost you weight? With Alien alloy, things are the same as a dark room in terms of where to find it, ie, battlefields, boreholes and possibly in cities. This does take a little longer than in A dark room sinse you don't have the builder's amulet to help you. Make sure to take note of the unexplored space listed on the map, particularly a long way out from the Swamp. While I found it a longer collection than in A dark room, on the plus side a bunch of new encounters have been added, particularly sinse you will find you need to keep visiting dungeons to make sure you have food, durable weapons and amo, plus there is a little special you can run into to make combat generally easier, (as a little hint, trading is good, and all resources in the game are used for something even if it doesn't seem so). Even though it took a longer time to find all the alien alloy than in a dark room, I enjoyed that section of a game a lot more in The Ensign sinse there was much more to explore, though when you do! get to the ending I ran into a miner bug where I got a blank screen and had to turn vo off and tap it to proceed, though whether Amir has sinse fixed this I don't know. Oh, and there are some very cool audio interviews to listen to as well as a reward, just like a dark room has. All the best, Dark. There is always more to know, more to see, more to learn. Lastly Alien Aloy, where do you think the best place is to attain it? you cant trade for it like in a dark room so I am thinking I will be wandering around collecting it in small portions. At the swamp you can store items, (there is an option), this is particularly useful at the start of the game for making sure you always have a steel sword in reserve and for storing resources like flesh, teeth and eyes (who's use you will find out later). Re: [Audyssey] groups regarding audiogames.
Hi Tom. Lack of centralization is indeed a possible concern. The audiogames.net site news and the fact that there are many members in common does tend to mean that the major stuff gets passed on, but is more of an issue for miner things or things that are very new, for example this morning a member called Stirlock posted a message about a new mud, Flux world, with apparently some access fixes. I've not tried it, and I'm not experienced enough with muds to coherently try to paraphrase Stirlock's message, but that is just one example. On the other hand, (and even speaking as I said from the fact that I don't personally like facebook), there are already some major communities which, if not actually specifically audiogames related, are so close as to have a lot of useful info that sometimes gets passed on. I'm thinking here of places like Applevis, the BGT forum, the Gma mailing list and possibly Klango (although Klango has sort of become the audiogame cracker's heaven from what I've gathered). So to an extent we might already be in the situation you mention, and sinse facebook is a visible platform it might be helpful to have some sort of stronger presense relating to audiogames there? That is why audiogames.net has a facebook page, although as I said I don't think it says anything too different to what is in the site news. So, I see pros and cons either way, although I confess even if it weren't for the fact that I'm not a fan of facebook anyway, I probably wouldn't want to get heavily involved in another audiogames community, just on the basis of time, heck, much as I do like the Applevis site I can't exactly call myself a contributing member. Perhaps that is another major concern, that whatever else most of the people who would be interested in participating in a facebook group are perhaps already involved with one or other or both audiogames communities, so how much time they'd have to spend on facebook I'm not sure. Really I don't know whether this is a good idea or not. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] groups regarding audiogames.
Hi Dark, I take your point. I like and use Facebook myself, but I just feel as though creating an Audyssey or a generic audio games group on Facebook is in a sense replicating what is already in existence while decentralizing the audio games community even further than it is. To give you an example how about news of existing games. We already know that sometimes people post news about new games to the Audiogames.net forum that does not make it over here to Audyssey or shows up only when someone remembers to mention it. Same thing happens in reverse. Sometimes people mention a new game on Audyssey that doesn't immediately get mentioned over on Audiogames.net. Adding a new Facebook group to the mix will only continue to add that kind of confusion and allow that lack of shared information to continue because there is no central hub for news to get posted and received by all the different groups, forums, and mailing lists. I'm not against a Facebook group because I think it is a bad idea. I think people should do what they feel most comfortable with, but am concerned that it will cause a loss of news and information to anyone and everyone not connected to that group. Especially, if a developer prefers to post there and not to Audyssey or to Audiogames.net. Cheers! Personally I am not a fan of facebook, far too much interface clutter and need to go through too many jo has just had breakfast and do you know Jane smith type messages to get to what you want, but I do know there are people who like the system. Btw, Audiogames.net does have a facebook page setup by Sander, though as far as I know it just replicates what news is posted to the front of site. Re: [Audyssey] A bit of an introduction and a tip
Hi Katie. Yes, I know Paladin of the sky well, albeit I sort of went on holiday halfway through my major game so probably need to restart and get right through to the end. I'm personal friends with the developer, but he won't tell me any of the storyline.
