[Audyssey] Article about New Program for Creating XBox 360 Games
Hi, I found this article while reading Kim Komando's Daily Computer News newsletter. I don't know how accessible this would be, and don't have an XBox 360, but I'm wondering if it might be possible to create audio-only games with this? Re: [Audyssey] sound question
Hi Thomas, I think Sound Ideas also sell CDs of sounds from individual cars for around $75.00. There's a page on their site called "Super Value Menu", which describes CDs that cost as low as $30.00 up to probably $250.00. There's also a collection of car effects that, if I remember correctly, is on five CDs, but I don't remember the price. Hope this helps. [Audyssey] Top Speed 2 and Multiplayer Games
Hi, I'm interested in playing Top Speed 2 against other Internet players, but everytime I join a server like the one on Asmodean.net, my computer just sits there. I realize it's down, but I'm wondering if there's something I need to adjust in my router, such as telling it what port to use? I had to do this when using the EchoLink program. If that's the case, I can't find the area in the Admin page where you put that information in now. Anyway, are there any Top Speed servers that are up frequently? Thanks. Hi, I just got a Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback joystick from my brother today. It seems to work well so far, even though I can't find the drivers for Windows XP. [Audyssey] A Couple Questions Regarding Psycho Strike
Hi, I started playing Psycho Strike today, and ended up purchasing it. It works great on my Windows 7 64-bit machine, but contrary to the manual, I couldn't get it to run on my XP system. (I get a message saying "This program is not a Win32-compatible program", or something to that effect.) Other than that, it's a lot of fun, but I have a few questions about the gameplay. 1. Presumably, you have to release prisoners before you can recruit any other characters. As far as I can tell, I've broken down some doors, but am not told if anyone has been set free. Is there a way to know if anyone has been released? Same thing with the bank vaults. I'll go up to one and take out my frustrations on it until glass begins breaking. Do I have to keep hitting it before I can get the cash, or do I automatically get it when the glass breaks? 2. I've noticed that in the black market there's a defensive shield. However, the price keeps changing, and I can't seem to buy it even if I have the right amount of cash. As an example, I was first told it would cost 149 cash. I managed to get up to 160 cash or something like that, but when I went to buy the shield, it said it was now available with an increased defensive level for 400 cash. Obviously, I now can't get it. Is this a bug with the game, or do you have to be very precise as far as cash goes? 3. Where can I find guns to use the pistol cartridges? I've been in the Weapons shop, but usually keep getting either a long knife or pistol cartridge, but no actual pistol. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Blindfold Bowling finally out!
Hi, I'm currently working on a podcast about the game for AppleVis, and hope to have it done soon. I plan on just demonstrating the simple version of the game where you aim the ball by moving a finger left to right, then letting go to throw. Re: [Audyssey] Bavisoft games.
Hi Lori, Even though I haven't played the games from Bavisoft in a very long time, I remember those snakes from Grizzly Gulch very well. You can get past them, but it requires careful listening. Don't feel bad, it took me a few tries myself. As for Chillingham, I think my CD is lost, but it really doesn't matter. I honestly never want to play it again. I think what really ruined that game for me was the part where you had to get a certain number of bugs for the professor, who then wants you to go back and get more. And more! And even more! At one point, I was almost yelling, "Hey! You want more? Go and get them yourself!" That, and the cliffhanger ending, which of course was never resolved since the promised sequel was never released. I'll admit, though, it was great getting emails from users asking for hints on how to complete the game because they couldn't contact Bavisoft. Thanks. [Audyssey] Question About The Get Lamp Text Adventure Documentary
Hi, Back in 2010, producer Jason Scott created a two-DVD documentary about text adventure games, or Interactive Fiction if you prefer, called "Get Lamp". From what I've read, the discs consist of the main documentary (which you can also watch on Youtube), featurettes about Infocom and other subjects, longer interviews, and a DVD ROM section with various games. I've watched the main documentary on Youtube and thought it was good. I'm wondering if anyone has the DVDs as I've been considering purchasing them. If so, I'm curious as to how good the rest of the content is? If you'd like more information about this set, visit http://www.getlamp.com/. Thanks. Hi Shaun and All, I like the idea of there being a podcast for the magazine, and would be interested in helping out with it if possible. [Audyssey] Need Help Taking Off In Zero Sight
Hi, I'm trying the demo version of Zero Sight, and so far like the sounds. However, I can't seem to get the plane to take off. After getting authorization from the Control Tower by first pressing F3 then F1, I press F to open the flaps, B to release the Ground Brakes, and the Page Up and Page Down keys to turn on the engines. Next, I get the speed to 46 with the Plus key on the numeric keypad, and the vertical heading to 38 using the Down arrow key. After that, the plane just sits there, at least from what I hear. [Audyssey] Slight Issue with New Zero Sight Demo
Hi, I just visited the Shard Workshop site, and noticed a new demo version of Zero Sight is now available, or so I assume since the 1.01 Full patch is mentioned. I downloaded it, thinking that maybe there was a bug with the first one that was preventing me from getting off the ground, but after choosing "Free Flight" from the menu, I noticed that the F3 key no longer informs me of the length of the airstrip. Is anyone else experiencing this? And in case you're wondering, I still can't take off, despite reading the manual and all. Thanks. [Audyssey] New Game from Spoonbill Software
Hi, If this has already been mentioned on the list, I apologize. For those of you who don't receive email updates from Ian Humphreys of Spoonbill Software, he's just released a new game in his Blind Gamers series. This time, it's a version of the popular Mastermind board game, in which you have to guess a secret code the computer gives you. I got my copy yesterday, and all I can say is it's fun, but challenging. I haven't been able to crack a code yet, but am having fun trying. You can get this, and the other games in the Blind Gamers series, which are all free, by contacting Ian. Hi Ben, Destination Mars was originally a DOS game written by Richard De Steno in the early 90s. Now, he's released a free version for Windows with sound effects. Re: [Audyssey] sudoku
Hi, I've been struggling with solving Sudoku puzzles for years, and still don't have a clue as to what I'm doing. I got a free book NBP was distributing for some time, simply called "Sudoku Puzzles", that had ten supposedly easy puzzles from a book called "Sudoku Easy" by Will Shortz, complete with a tactile representation of a board with squares. I honestly don't know how you come up with the right solution, as looking at the ones in the book make absolutely no sense to me. I know these are logic puzzles, but so far my logic doesn't seem to be working, and I end up putting random numbers in the blanks. I've also got the free Sudoku game from Spoonbill Software, and even an iPod game called Sudoku4All, but I'm not sure those are helping either. My mom, who usually can figure out these things, thinks that a board with pegs would be better as I'd have a tactile representation, so she adapted a small set for me, but I haven't had much luck with it. As a result, I've pretty much given up, but if anyone has any hints on solving these puzzles, please let me know. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Help with playing Future Boy.
Hi Michael, When you start Future Boy, the first thing I recommend doing is typing "menus off" (without the quotes). This will set the menus so they're a numbered list, rather than the default, which can be tricky to use. After that, you can go into the game's menu by typing "menu" or "help", and adjust the game that way. In the Options menu (not the one on the program's menu bar), you can save your settings so you won't have to type the "menus off" command again the next time you load the game. The other thing you might want to do is to go into the Options submenu on the Hugo Engine menu bar, and turn off the graphics. Hope this helps. [Audyssey] You Don't Know Jack for iOS
Hi, While looking around Brandon Cole's game samples page, I came across a file featuring the iOS version of You Don't Know Jack. According to the site, it's doable once you figure out where to tap on the screen, so I thought I'd get it for my iPod and give it a try. (From what I've heard, it's now available for free with various episodes being released every week, though there are token packs you can purchase from within the app. What they're for, I don't know.) [Audyssey] ErnCon
Hi, After reading about the ErnCon multiplayer arcade shooter game on this list, I downloaded it onto my iPod Touch. Quite honestly, I'm finding this game to be more of a frustration than anything. I know there were some messages on this list that basically said this game was playable with Voiceover. That may be true, but I quickly got frustrated with the tutorial, as I couldn't get past the screen where it says to touch the blinking cursor (or whatever it is) to move the ship. I double-tapped the button a few times, but nothing happened. Turning VO off didn't help as I couldn't tell where the thing was on the screen. Finally, I got so frustrated that I quit the tutorial, and was prompted to go on a mission. I found out how to fire, but other than that I really don't know what I'm doing. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll say one thing about this game though, the music is pretty good. [Audyssey] My First Impressions of Change Reaction 2 for Windows
Hi, Since I enjoy playing the original Change Reaction, I was very excited about this new version of the game, and immediately bought it upon reading the announcement on Draconis's Twitter feed. Actually, I first downloaded the file from their website and installed it after first removing version 1, and discovered, to my surprise, that there's no playable demo! I know there's an audio demo on the site, but I couldn't get it to play using their player, which I believe is Java-based. (I personally don't know why developers have to use these players on their sites. I think it's better to just link to an MP3 file so the visitor can listen to it in their favorite player.) Purchasing and registering the game was simple, but I noticed that the information displayed on the screen when you're presented with the registration dialog wasn't spoken automatically by JFW, or even a TTS engine like it was in the first version. I had to use the JAWS cursor to read it. After getting into the game, I listened to most of the tutorials for the various game types. I personally would've prefered a manual like the previous version had, but the Learn to Play option isn't bad, though I noticed that if you move back a page with the Left Arrow, for example, the speech tends to read something else, or at least doesn't seem to skip to that section right away. Now we come to gameplay, and this is where I'm really having problems. (I should mention that I'm playing this game using Windows XP.) So far, I've just played, or rather tried to play, the Classic mode. Either I'm so used to version 1's gameplay, or I'm not doing something right in version 2, but there are times things don't seem to work propperly. In particular, I've noticed that speech doesn't get interrupted when quickly pressing the Left and Right arrow keys, like in version 1. There are also times when I don't get any speech at all for awhile, or else I'll be on a coin, but the previous one isn't read out. As well, I might press Space when I'm on a Penny, for example, which may be the coin I have to match, and nothing appears to happen. No laughing noise or anything! The first time I started noticing all this behavior, I thought my keyboard was acting up, even though I had unloaded my screen reader completely. I've even noticed that the sound you hear when a lit bomb explodes doesn't play half the time. I might be on a bomb, and then I hear the scream, but no proceeding explosion. In conclusion, Change Reaction 2 might be a good game, but so far I'm beginning to think I should've stuck with version 1 until these bugs were squashed. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] My First Impressions of Change Reaction 2 for Windows
Hi, First, thanks to Draconis for the tip on changing sound cards. Turns out it was my RealTech card that was causing the trouble. After I chose my M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card, the game played flawlessly, and I got $29.36 in the first game! Before reading the tip though, I thought it might be my computer's memory, but I've got 1.99 GHZ of RAM, and am running the game on a 2.39 GHZ processor. Hi, After playing Awesome Homer by Jim Kitchen for some time now, I finally managed to get to level 2, where you have to jump to various planes and a helicopter. That's fine, but I'm a bit confused. Are you supposed to jump when the next plane is in the center position, or when the plane you just jumped to gets to where the other one is in terms of stereo positioning? I do fine for the most part, but usually end up missing the jump from plane 4 to 5. Thanks. [Audyssey] Need Help with Level 6 of Awesome Homer
Hi, I'm now on level 6 of Awesome Homer. I know you have to get to a parking garage at the end of the level, but the instructions don't indicate what the various sounds represent. I like hearing the various video game tunes in the background, and notice they change quite a bit, but I'm not sure if that's to indicate something's about to happen or if I'm getting close to my objective. There's also a wind-like effect that's heard every so often from left, right or ahead of me, so I assume this may mean a passage in that direction. Sometimes, however, when I go to the left, for example, I get killed by falling into a pit. At one point I also got attacked by a lion, but there was no indication I was getting close to one. Can someone please explain this level for me? Thanks. [Audyssey] Level 7 was Re: Need Help with Level 6 of Awesome Homer
Hi Jim, Thanks for the info about level 6. I got past it, and am now on level 7, where you have to pull alongside the gorilla's vehicle. However, I'm wondering if there's a bug with this level. After getting past the gorilla the first time, whenever I again catch up to his car and move to the left or right, it sounds as though he's trying to follow me as the noise is always in the center position, and I usually end up crashing into him. I somehow managed to pass him a couple more times, then I died from having some rotten bananas hit my windshield. What am I supposed to do at this point? Thanks. [Audyssey] Accessible Chess Tutor
Hi, While looking around AudioGames.net just now, I came across a program called Accessible Chess Tutor. It's a self-voicing program that's supposed to tell you the moves for each piece, but so far all I've been able to do is navigate around a chess board with the arrow keys. When I find a piece like a pawn for example, I don't know what to do next in order to hear the moves you can make. As there's no documentation included, I'm wondering if anyone's tried this program, and if so how do you use it? Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Chess Tutor
Hi Charles and All, After searching for any information about Accessible Chess Tutor, I found a page about it, along with a brief description on how to use it. Basically you use the arrow keys, Space and Enter. However, nothing I do makes the game read any acceptable moves for me, moves the pieces to a particular square, etc. At one point it even crashed on me. Given all these issues, I've given up on it. [Audyssey] Question About Shredder Chess for iOS
Hi, I've been trying the lite version of Shredder Chess for awhile using my iPod Touch. So far it's not bad, but I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing problems using the Hint button? At least on my device, whenever I double-tap on it, VoiceOver starts to read the hint, but it gets cut off. I haven't been able to find the text for the hint anywhere to review, assuming it's even there. I'm wondering if this also applies to the full version, which is currently on sale for $3.99 in the App Store. While comparing both products, I noticed that the full version was updated in 2012, while the Lite version was last updated in 2011. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Help to write a text adventure.
Hi Michael, When creating your game in Quest, are you planning on writing the source code in a text file then compiling the game with the program, or using Quest's built-in creation tools, sort of like what ADRIFT has? I don't know if accessibility has improved as far as creating a game with the system goes, but when I tried it a couple years ago I found it impossible. I personally like using ADRIFT, but haven't looked at the latest version, ADRIFT 5, in awhile to see how well it works in terms of accessibility. Thanks. [Audyssey] Repairing Items in Star Traders RPG
Hi, I just started playing Star Traders RPG on my iPod Touch. So far, I've docked, fulfilled a contract at a palace, and have upgraded my ship with some items such as some solar sails among other things. I'm now getting messages saying that two of the sails are in need of repair. When I double-tap on the "Fix sails" button, it brings up a screen with "buy", "sell", two text boxes with dollar amounts, two more boxes with "0" and "2" (which I assume is the number of repairs), and a slider. Unfortunately, I can't seem to do anything in this screen. "Buy" and "Sell" don't appear to be buttons, I can't edit anything in the text boxes, and the slider stays at 0% and won't move. In short, nothing works when I double-tap on it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks. [Audyssey] Swamp and Single-Player Maps
Hi, I started playing Swamp a few months ago, but at the time found it somewhat frustrating because of the numerous controls and also using the mouse. A few days ago, I decided to give it another go, and believe I'm now beginning to get the hang of it. However, I'm still trying to aim at zombies reliably, as I sometimes can't get them centered quickly before I get killed. There's even a single-player map I'm playing where I can't hear them approach. (I think it's called Defend, something to that effect anyway.) Speaking of single-player maps, I'm wondering which ones are good for a novice player to start with? At some point I may purchase an account, but want to get more familiar with the game before going online. Thanks. Hi Lori and John, Thanks for all the suggestions. Just so I understand it, you shoot when you hear the zombies growl, correct? [Audyssey] Question About Window-Eyes and Audio Games
Hi, For awhile now, I've been learning how to use the Window-Eyes screen reader, as I'm planning on installing the free version for Office users when I get my new computer in addition to JAWS and NVDA. (I like having alternatives like these.) With the latter two screen readers, you can make them "sleep" while playing self-voicing games, though with JAWS it involves setting it in the configuration manager on an application basis. I'm wondering if it's possible to do this with Window-Eyes, or do you have to completely shut it down before you can play a game? Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Question About Window-Eyes and Audio Games
Hi, Thanks for all the responses about my Window-Eyes query. I know it's been a couple weeks since I sent the message, but I'm just getting around to trying the suggestions now. Sky had said to go to the General item in the Window-Eyes Control Panel, then once it's opened to move down to Voice. I have the Advanced options checked, and so far don't see anything about a Voice option, except under Devices. There was an option to turn off the voice in the General/Core Functions area, but nothing to make it program-specific. Also, I don't know anything about how set files are created. When I opened Jim Kitchen's menu program and went into the Control panel, I saw something like "Window-Eyes Active: default.set, Association none". How do I create a new set file or association for the menu program? Thanks. [Audyssey] Question About Installing Games Under Windows 7 64-Bit
Hi, I'm getting my new 64-bit machine in a couple days, which will have Windows 7 Professional installed (rubs hands in eager anticipation). While I'm looking forward to working with a new, at least to me, version of Windows, one thing I'm wondering about is where I should install games like those from Jim Kitchen. As I understand it, there are two "Program Files" folders when you have a 64-bit system. Can someone tell me which one I should install games to, or does it really matter? Do you have to use the Compatibility Wizard for the games to work, or are they usable regardless? Also, on a slightly different note, I've had an odd issue with Smugglers 5 running under Windows XP. The game works fine, but I've noticed that when I quit, the dinging noise you hear if you press a wrong key appears to be disabled until the computer is restarted. It's a minor thing, I know, but I like to have all my system sounds working. I'm just wondering if anyone has had this issue when playing the game under Windows 7? Thanks. [Audyssey] Which is Better, Pocket MUD Pro or Mudrammer?

[Audyssey] My Opinions Regarding Windows Frotz
Hi, I normally use the Filfre interpreter to play ZCode games, such as those from Infocom, but after reading the description for Windows Frotz on AudioGames.net, I thought I'd give it a try. I'm using version 1.17. What I'm about to say is based on my first impressions of the program, but after using it for a few minutes, I think that the description on AudioGames.net needs some correcting. According to the site, JAWS is supposed to speak the text automatically, but that hasn't happened with version 14. Reading text with the JAWS cursor is practically useless, as text seems to gradually appear as you play, and doesn't match what the SAPI 5 voice says. (I'm wondering if the font or display settings need to be changed to make this work better.) Also, the link for the NVDA plugin linked to on AudioGames.net doesn't work. I was able to find it though by going to http://stormdragon.us/nvda/. I'll admit, I haven't tested Windows Frotz with NVDA yet, but I'm not sure I'd recommend this program for JAWS, unless there are settings I need to adjust to make it work better. For now, though, I think I'll stick with Filfre. I don't know if it has SAPI 5 output or not, but at least I can read the text propperly with the JAWS cursor which I prefer anyway. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] My Opinions Regarding Windows Frotz
Hi, I was able to play a game with WinFrotz and SAPI 5, but in general I don't care for that option because you can't do things like silence speech if you need to, or have it spell certain words. I'll definitely check the Autoscrolling setting, and will also try it with NVDA. Thanks. [Audyssey] NVDA was Re: My Opinions Regarding Windows Frotz
Hi All, I just tried Windows Frotz 1.17 (the latest version) with NVDA 2013.2, both with and without the plugin, and it doesn't speak any text automatically. However, I can read what's on the screen using the screen review mode and keys 7 and 9 on the numeric keypad, but I find it awkward as I have to scroll through the text to get to the new output, instead of going to the bottom of the screen and working my way up. I have Fast Scrolling unchecked, and the More Prompts setting checked. There's no Autoscrolling option I can find, unless that's what Fast Scrolling does. For my fonts, they're currently set to Microsoft San Seriff, and Consolas for the Fixed Width font. Hope this helps. [Audyssey] Landing in Zero Sight Demo
Hi, I remember trying the demo version of the Zero Sight flight simulator a couple years ago, and getting extremely frustrated with the take-off sequence. Recently I tried it again, and was able to take off. Now I just have to learn how to attack, but right now I'm interested in landing the plane. I followed the instructions as far as lowering the speed to 200, setting the vertical heading to 350 with up arrow, and pressing G and F for the gear and flaps respectively, but I'm not sure what to do at this point. It took the computer quite awhile before it would say that I could land now, but even then I'm not sure how to touch down. I've also tried getting the co-pilot to land, but at the moment, and this is probably because of something I'm not doing right, he's not much help as he cycles from doing the landing sequence, then the take-off sequence, and finally saying he's right next to me. Does anyone have any ideas on how to proceed at this point? Thanks. [Audyssey] Alter Aeon was Re: Getting Back into Mudding
Hi All, I just created my character on Alter Aeon (I'm a necromancer named Baruko), and went through a few of the rooms, completing a quest in the process. So far, I'm very impressed. I'm using the Mush-Z pack to play the game, and really like the sounds and music. One thing has me stumped, however. I have the Sendspace Wizard installed on the computer I'm playing the game on. If I choose "Play Alter Aeon" from the Start Menu, the Wizard program comes up instead of Mush-Z. I don't know what MCL files are supposed to do in the Wizard program, but it brings up an upload dialog, which I definitely don't want. The only way I've found to get around this is to load the Mush-Z program, then select the file from the Open dialog. Has anyone else experienced this issue? It's nothing major as I don't mind going through the client, but I find it odd just the same. Other than that, I think this is going to be a pretty good game. I'm also considering maybe purchasing VIPMud to play some other MUDs, but we'll see as time goes on. Thanks. [Audyssey] Alter Aeon and Disappearing Items
Hi, I'm trying to complete a quest in Alter Aeon. I found and killed the required enemy, and was told there were some items I could loot, including a key. Unfortunately, I was also under attack from a zombie or something. Basically, once everyone was defeated, I tried to get the key from the main enemy, and was told it wasn't there. Sure enough, the items that had been there were gone, and I'm pretty sure that key was needed to unlock a chest I found later. If that's the case, I'm stuck. Is there any way I can recover the key, or do I have to reset my character and try again? Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Character Names and MUDs
Hi, Thanks for all the suggestions. A few years ago, I was interested in trying a Star Wars MUD (I think that's what it was called too, Star Wars MUD). I couldn't think of a good name, so I entered my own, my theory being that if Luke Skywalker was a good name in the series, why not Kelly Sapergia? Apparently, the moderators disagreed, because I got a message a few minutes later basically saying they thought my name sounded too realistic or "ordinary", and asked me to pick a different character name. I can't find it now, assuming they still have it, but back then they had an alien name generator, but the names I saw didn't appeal to me. To be fair, the person that contacted me in-game was nice about the whole thing, but I immediately lost interest in it and other MUDs until now. [Audyssey] Question about A Couple Games Under iOS 5
Hi, I believe I'm going to be getting an iPod Touch either tomorrow or sometime in the not-to-distant future. I got to play with my brother's for an hour during a visit last year, and gradually got used to the various gestures using the practice function. I plan on buying an audio game once I'm familiar with the rest of the device's layout (I'm trying to decide if I should get either Aurifi or Papa Sangre first), but was wondering how well these games work under iOS 5? I'm asking because when I read the reviews for them on iTunes, some people noted that they sometimes crash a lot, or may not work properly. I'm just wondering if anyone's had any trouble using these games with the latest iOS, as the last thing I want to do is buy a game and discover that it's unplayable for whatever reason. Just out of curiosity, what happens if a game does crash? I assume it would stop running, but just wanted to check. Thanks.
