I remember Gator fans rushing the field twice, both away from home. The first
time was in the Gator Bowl after the 1984 win over the dawgs - the goalposts
came down that time.

The next was in the win over the semis in Tally in 1986. They turned on the
sprinklers to try and get the fans off of the field, but since much of the game
was played in a downpour, that had little effect.

I think Spurrier made the remark about maybe they should have let the fans on
the field to celebrate after the 1997 32-29 win over then ranked #1 FSU.

That's an interesting question. I remember Spurrier lamenting once that fans
couldn't rush the field. If I remember correctly, he even made a symbolic push
against a goal post.

Wasn't there once an incident--not involving a home football game--when fans
went into the empty stadium and took down the goal posts? Or am I just dreaming?

I seem to remember Gator fans on the field after beating Kentucky to win our

C'mon, he's a football coach. He didn't review every play of the last
three games and not notice anything of strategic significance. He
just doesn't intend to share it with you through public media. He
does admit we're not very good in any area, so he's not in denial. If
he's not in denial, he's working on it, because as much as we love to
win, he hates to lose even more. So have a second or third look at

Florida head coach Urban Meyer reacts after his offense scored early in the
first quarter against Kentucky at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Saturday,
September 25, 2010 in Gainesville, Florida.

GAINESVILLE -- The first step toward correcting a problem is identifying
it, and coach Urban Meyer believes he has done that with his offense.

Meyer said he reviewed each of his team's drives from its three-game losing
streak and found three main causes for the Gators' slump: a lack of big
plays in the running game, poor passing efficiency and turnovers.

UF hasn't had a touchdown run longer than 11 yards in the past five games,
ranks 10th in the Southeastern Conference in pass efficiency and is tied
for second-worst in the conference for turnovers (14).

``It's all on paper. It's all up on the board,'' Meyer said. ``Now we're
addressing how to fix those issues.''

To right the wrongs, Meyer said he would make adjustments to scheme and
personnel, changes he hopes start with getting players healthy.

Running backs Jeff Demps, Emmanuel Moody and Mike Gillislee were all
hampered against Mississippi State, and receiver Andre Debose did not
practice this week because of a sprained ankle.

We had a trailer clean-out Saturday morning, and much of the dad's

 something that happened today.

I am the Committee Chairman for a Cub Scout Pack that my Son is in.

Last night someone stole the Boy Scout Trailer from our church, and also
broke into our Cub Scout trailer.  It is going to be tough to put together
our Cubaree this year.  The Cub Scout Pack lost over 8,000.00 worth of
camping gear, and the Troop lost all of their stuff, as well as a 2,000.00
enclosed trailer.  If anyone sees a red enclosed trailer that is marked with
Troop 128 Boy Scouts let me know.  Thanks for the time.

I still don't really understand why the Gators and Cam couldn't have worked

[gatortalk] Re: He did steal a laptop

2010-10-25 Thread GatorGene
I hate being lumped in with Criminoles and Scumicanes as a college
football team of entitled thugs, druggies, and university-sanctioned
villains. I was disappointed to read that we did NOT kick Cam off the
team, and would have allowed him to remain a Gator representative
(i.e., active player), and that it was Cam's choice to leave UF. Some
traffic violations, public urination, and even a non-escalated scuffle
at a downtown bar seem to me to be common enough among all students,
that they can be accepted (corrected and atoned for while remaining on
the team) when committed by a football player, but theft is clearly
wrong and not a part of the college maturation process, and so
shouldn't be acceptable among university representatives (football
players) who get held, and should get held, to a higher standard.

If we're saying that we wished he had NOT been involved with theft or
accessory to theft, and that we'd love to have a Cam Newton with a
clean record performing for UF today, then I'm sure we'd all agree.
But I'm not a subscriber to the Bowdenesque I'm raising them as my
own children school of college football coaching, and I wish there
were more evidence that we have high moral standards for our current
football players.

I know there are many who don't agree with me, and as a parent I do
believe in second and third and fourth chances, so I hope that sharing
my contrary opinion on GatorTalk for friendly discussion and rebuttal
isn't taken as offensive.

Cheers,

I'm sure that it knows it now, but probably agreed to exclusivity

However, exclusive means exclusive, and now UF finds its hands tied

traffic violations, public urination, and even a non-escalated scuffle

shouldn't be acceptable among university representatives (football

2010-10-25 Thread Oliver Barry
The university hired this company to do just what it is doing. They don't
care about exclusivity. They only care about making money.

If I have a can opener that I want to stick a gator head on I just call up
this licensing company and they'll set me up. All I need to do is send them
a portion of the money I make off my can openers.

It's just like Elvis. Before the family started licensing Elvis stuff you
could buy Elvis on velvet paintings everywhere. When they licensed him all
that stopped. Now, the best you can get is the dogs playing cards on
velvet.

UF may not have considered all the flap that would arise over making high
schools pay for their use of the gator logo, but that's licensing. You have
to make everyone pay or no one has to.

Eventually all this will die down and UF will get all the money.

I think it is interesting that the universities all complain about the
agents on campus, yet they use the same company, IMG, that is the largest

Not to hijack the thread, but it would seem if IMG wants the commission off

to swing in regards to the agent issues.

This may be the story that everyone seems to be missing, that one licensing
company is acting much more heavy-handed than companies had in the past,
that the high schools are suffering, and that the Universities are reaping

I've not seen the contract.

If it were a 5 year exclusive contract, exactly how would UF control
CLC if CLC wanted to stomp on an elementary school for using the

Do you really think UF doesn't want CLC to stomp on an elementary school?

Would the contract not have been reviewed by UF attorneys?

That's one of the reasons for hiring them. They can pass the blame on to
them.

Another reason for hiring them is they don't have to track down every little
violator. CLC does it.

They also go after the little t-shirt screen printer who prints up a few
dozen shirts with a gator head and tries to sell them in their small
community.

The poor screen printer was just trying to make a buck. Trying to keep the
wolf from the door. Where's the sympathy for him? It's the same thing.

Why do you think some spokesperson for the university hasn't organized a
press conference and exclaimed to the world that this kind of activity is
overboard and we really didn't intend for the small elementary school to be
hurt? Why not? Because this is exactly what CLC was contracted for. This
isn't collateral damage. This is what licensing is all about.

A good theory, pretty reasonable.

One question - why now? Intellectual Property law hasn't changed in
this area since I was in law school 20 years ago, and it was old then.

Surely UF has had licensing agreements going back decades.

If this was part of UF's master plan when licensing its logo, what

Licensing today is a vastly larger and more lucrative deal than it was
decades ago. UF used to handle licensing in house, but it got so big that
they outsourced it.
Using a company like CLC increases revenue because vendors can go to one
source to license a bunch of university logos. I agree with Oliver that the
universities want and expect CLC to police who is using the logos with out a
license.

Here are the top institutions based on royalties for the year ended 6/30/10.
Ohio State is not listed because they handle licensing in-house and
apparently their numbers are not available to CLC. I wouldn't be surprised
if UF drops a notch or two next year thanks to the football team's dismal
performance this year and the fact that Florida is suffering more from the
recession than most states.

[gatortalk] I've gotta good feeling...

2010-10-25 Thread Ken Kirkley
This off week came at the perfect time, it has allowed everyone to sit back
calm down and look at this season in the grand scheme of things. It has
given the football team a chance to heal physically and it has given the
coaches an extra week to fix the problems. It has even given me a chance to
go back and re-watch the last three games, boy, what a joy!

At the risk of being labeled a Polly Anna, we are not as bad as we have
looked. In fact, for as bad as we have played we easily could have won the
last two games. Of course, we could have just as easily been blown out.

What I am seeing with this team is conservative play calling, poor execution
by players and turnovers. With bad play calling and poor execution, we
still would have won the last two on talent alone. Throw in turnovers at
inopportune times and it spelled doom.

Playcalling - I am not sure if it's the plays being called or the scheme. I
watch a lot of football and there are a couple of plays that we just don't
run. One is WR crossing routes off the line - this makes the defense make a
choice immediately as to who is going to cover who, more often than not one
of the WRs will get separation and be open. This is an especially important
play for us as our OL is not providing the protection for our guys to get
open downfield, and most D's are playing a cover 2 most of the time, leaving
2 safeties deep to double on the long ball. The second thing that is
missing is misdirection - based on how we line up and certain tells (look at
RBs and OL slightly angled in the direction we are going), not every player
but enough that a LB who has watched enough film during the week can
probably guess right 80% of the time which direction we are running. A
misdirection play will help because they now have to wait before attacking
the hole. The third big missing play is a simple slant or crossing route
from our slot receivers. These guys will usually be covered by a LB coming
across the middle and we should be able to win that battle, but we never
seem to run the play. The last thing is audibles at the line. I don't know
if Brantley is allowed to or not, but last week we had at least 2 plays
where the corner came on a blitz and the WR was left uncovered as the
safeties had crept up to cover the run. A simple hot audible and it would
have been a TD, but instead we handed off to a RB both times.

Execution - Who was the coach when asked about his team's execution replied
I'm all for it? Bottom line is we have very talented players who more
often than not are in position to make plays, but don't. I don't know if is
mental or what, but they have the physical attributes but tank. Brantley
with off-target throws, we have seen him zip it in at time, but he is
inconsistent. Deonte with the drops, numerous OL whiffing on blocks, DBs
who can't tackle, etc. I have a hard time attributing this to coaching as
this coaching staff has been successful in the past, yes there are a lot of
changes, but at the same time there is a lot of holdover too.

Turnovers - Anybody else equate the return of fumbilitis with the return of
Stan Drayton? Wasn't that the big knock on him when he left? Turnovers are
killing us, we fix this and things will get better in a hurry.

As for this weekend, I'm as nervous as I have been in a long time for a
Cocktail Party, but I think we will come out strong and with something to
prove. Ugh is going to come out and think they can throw it all over the
field like they have the past 3 games (against UT, UK and Vandy). They are
going to find out that even with 3 losses, we are bit more formidable
opponent than they have seen recently and if they want to try and use AJ
Jones, bring it on, I say we end up with at least 3 picks this weekend. If
we don't turn the ball over, Gators win 34-17. If we turn it over, someone
better rush Woody to the hospital...

I seem to remember Gator fans on the field after beating Kentucky to win our
first ever SEC title in Lexington in 1984. During those times we played
Kentucky in late November and that was the coldest football game I can remember.

I remember Gator fans rushing the field twice, both away from home. The
first time was in the Gator Bowl after the 1984 win over the dawgs - the
goalposts came down that time.

The next was in the win over the semis in Tally in 1986. They turned on
the sprinklers to try and get the fans off of the field, but since much of the
game was played in a downpour, that had little effect.

I think Spurrier made the remark about maybe they should have let the
fans on the field to celebrate after the 1997 32-29 win over then ranked #1
FSU.

Helen Huntley wrote:

That's an interesting question. I remember Spurrier lamenting once
that fans couldn't rush the field. If I remember correctly, he even made a
symbolic push against a goal post.

Wasn't there once an incident--not involving a home football
game--when fans went into the empty stadium and took down the goal posts? Or am
I just dreaming?

2010-10-25 Thread Cecilia
Does it always rain in Tally when we play there? There were torrential rains
during the 1984 game there, too. I was there, had been sick for a week but
refused to stay home and miss that game. We got SOAKED, and the old Doak
Campbell stadium was a freakin' mud puddle when it rained. That was gross. I
remember watching as the rain rushed down the stairs of the bleachers like
there was a creek there. The cheerleaders were muddy and finally just gave up
and started running and sliding in the med. They were right in front of us.
We came from behind to win that game and, despite still being sick and
ultimately getting sicker, it remains one of the best games I've ever attended.
We were sitting amongst Gators but there were some obnoxious Semis near us who
were VERY loud as long as they were ahead. When we came from behind to beat
them, they were extremely quiet. My sister had just married a Semi the
Saturday before that, and I think he was wishing he had found another family to
join. LOL.

SEC fines Kentucky after fans rush field
by Jason Lieser
The University of Kentucky will pay a $25,000 fine to the SEC because its fans
rushed the field following the Wildcats’ win over South Carolina on Oct. 16.

The conference policy went into place in 2004 and start with a $5,000 fine for
the first offense. The second is a maximum of $25,000 and the third is up to
$50,000. If a school is penalized and goes three years without another
infraction, the next violation is considered a second offense.

This is the fourth such penalty for Kentucky in football. The school had one in
2006 and two in 2007.
To the best of my knowledge this has not happened in Florida over the past two
decades. Anybody know the last time fans rushed the field at Ben Hill Griffin
Stadium?

Auburn is the right one
By Mark Schlabach
ESPN.com

I think the BCS got it right this time.
After ranking Oklahoma No. 1 in the initial BCS standings a week ago, the BCS
formula spit out Auburn as the No. 1 team on Sunday, after the Sooners lost at
Missouri 36-27 on Saturday night.
I know Oregon's high-scoring offense and fast athletes leave you shaking your
head with amazement each and every week, but Auburn has accomplished more than
any other team heading into the final month of the college football season.
The Tigers are 8-0 after Saturday's 24-17 victory over LSU, and they've already
beaten four teams ranked in the Top 25 of the BCS standings: No. 12 LSU, No. 19
Arkansas, No. 20 South Carolina and No. 21 Mississippi State. That resume is
why
the Tigers have the best computer average of any team in the country.
With games left against Ole Miss, FCS foe Chattanooga, Georgia and No. 7
Alabama
and possibly the SEC championship game in the Georgia Dome, it's hard to
imagine
the Tigers being left out of the Jan. 10 BCS National Championship Game if they
finish 13-0.
The No. 2 Ducks are undoubtedly one of the most entertaining teams to watch,
with their point-a-minute offense and frenetic pace. But Oregon has defeated
only one team ranked in the Top 25 of the BCS standings (No. 13 Stanford). The
Ducks are still getting hammered in the computer rankings for their soft
schedule with an average computer rating of eighth.
With games left against Southern California and No. 15 Arizona, the Ducks will
have a couple of opportunities to impress voters and computers.
A couple of other thoughts on the BCS standings:
• Fans of defending BCS national champion Alabama better start rooting for No.
5
Michigan State and No. 6 Missouri to lose. The Crimson Tide are No. 7 in the
BCS
standings -- they're the highest-rated team with one loss -- but it's hard to
imagine Alabama finishing ahead of the Spartans and Tigers, if either one of
those teams finish the regular season with unblemished records.
• Not sure what kind of virus Richard Billingsley's computer has, but he might
want to disinfect it. Billingsley's top five goes like this: TCU, Auburn,
Alabama, Boise State and LSU. He has Florida at No. 21 and Texas at No. 22.
• Auburn is No. 1 in three of the computer rankings (Anderson Hester, Colley
Matrix and Wolfe), TCU was No. 1 in one (Billingsley) and Missouri was No. 1 in
two (Massey and Sagarin).
