[gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] [SUN]: UF's Murphy hot in red zone

2013-09-29 Thread Oliver Barry
With Driskel out with a season-ending broken lower right leg, five
quarterbacks made the trip for the Gators, including former Gainesville High
standout Ryan McGriff, a redshirt sophomore walk-on. The other quarterbacks
making the trip and dressing out were Tyler Murphy, Skyler Mornhinweg, Max
 Staver and Christian Provancha. …

Is Ryan McGriff part of the McGriff family we are familiar with at UF?

I noticed he seemed to be an integral part of the sideline staff, wearing
headphones and signaling in to the offense.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Since taking over for the injured Jeff Driskel in the first
quarter of last week’s Tennessee game, junior quarterback Tyler Murphy has
done many good things at quarterback for the Gators.

The one thing he seems to excel at is getting the Gators in the end zone when
 they reach the red zone.

For the second week in a row, the Gators were red-hot in the red zone — a
 rarity in recent seasons.

In the first half against Kentucky, Murphy and the Gators were 3-for-3 in the
red zone, scoring TDs on all three trips.

Murphy was highly efficient in the red zone. He threw a touchdown pass to
Trey Burton on one trip and ran for a touchdown on another, helping the
Gators build a 21-7 halftime lead.

Murphy and the Gators went up and down the field throughout the first half,
rolling up 253 total yards — 133 on the ground and 120 in the air.

In the half, Murphy was a perfect 11-for-11 for 129 yards and a TD.

 Burton skins ’Cats again

Trey Burton continues to dog the Wildcats with his ability to find the end
 zone against them.

Burton caught a touchdown pass in the first half Saturday, raising his career
 total against UK to eight.

Six of those touchdowns, of course, came in his true freshman season (2010),
when he lit up the ’Cats out of the Wildcat formation.

 Defense shakes slow start

After giving up chunks of yardage to the Wildcats early in the game, the
Florida defense settled down and dominated the rest of the first half.

The defense actually pitched a first-half shutout, and when the Gators needed
a play in the closing seconds of the second quarter, the defense responded,
stopping UK on a fourth-and-4 from the UF 30.

 Gators fall for the fake

The Wildcats gave the Gators a glimpse of what they might see on special
teams in a few weeks in Baton Rouge.

In a fake field goal that seemed to come right out of the Les Miles gambling
playbook, the Wildcats burned the Gators for a touchdown late in the first
 quarter.

Lining up for a 42-yard field goal attempt, holder Jared Leet took the snap,
then tossed the ball over his head to kicker Joe Mansour, who sprinted
untouched to the end zone down the right sideline.

Miles, of course, has burned the Gators a few times with similar fakes over
the past few years. He’ll certainly be interested in seeing the tape of UK’s
 successful gamble.

 Hardin keeps starting job

Struggling redshirt freshman place-kicker Austin Hardin obviously did enough
in practice this past week to fend off Brad Phillips and hold onto his
 starting role.

Hardin kicked UF’s first extra point, then came out early in the second
quarter to attempt a 53-yard field goal that was well short.

 Robinson, Pittman return

Wide receivers Latroy Pittman and Demarcus Robinson returned from their
 suspensions Saturday night.

Pittman was suspended for the first three games for a violation of team
rules. He was wearing No. 9 Saturday instead of the No.13 he wore last
season. Robinson was suspended from last week’s Tennessee game for a
 violation of team rules.

 Chucky makes the trip

Star senior defensive tackle Dominique Easley, who is facing season-ending
knee surgery, did not make the trip to Lexington, but his famous (or
 infamous) Chucky doll did.

In honor of Easley, sophomore defensive end/linebacker Dante Fowler Jr.
brought Easley’s Chucky doll with him. Fowler tweeted a picture of Chucky on
the team plane on the flight to Lexington on Friday.

With Easley out, Damien Jacobs and Jonathan Bullard started inside at the

Great input, especially the brunch idea at Paramount. I will be
certain to do that next visit, I have had dinner there and loved it.
We were three students and me on Friday night, so I thought the
upbeat atmosphere at Saboré might work well, and it did. Every tapa
came four to a plate, so we shared each dish. I thought the food was
over all very good, the students thought it was the best that they
had ever had. In their defense, they have been eating dining hall
food for a month.
 http://www.saborerestaurant.com/ [1]
The Tioga Town center is charming and not overrun, even on football
weekends. That is where the restaurant is, about 3 miles east of the
Oaks Mall on Newberry. It is a combination luxury
living/dining/shopping complex, sort of like Misener Park but on a
much smaller scale. It also had a pavilion for live entertainment.
 http://www.tiogatowncenter.com/ [2]
Saboré is colorful, nice drink menu, interesting dishes, and we had
excellent service. Dish for dish, from my experience, Paramount would
have had it beat; but for fun, something different, and variety, it
is tough to beat Saboré. Even the floor was some sort of liquid gel
that acted like a lava lamp when you stepped on it. I also
appreciated the ease of parking, downtown can be crazy on the
weekends.
Also of note, Gainesville Wine and Cheese now has a restaurant
inside of it called Panache. It is open for lunch 6 days and dinner 2
to 3 days (sometimes Saturday, sometimes not). It is in an old house
on Main, just north of University. It hasn't moved in 40 years, so
you all may remember it.
 http://www.wineandcheesegallery.com/ [3]
Wade and Bunky still run the place, there is indoor dining and a
lovely outdoor patio with white christmas lights in the trees. Food
is creative, upscale, with a slight country french twist. For
example, lunch featured daily quiches, cheese plates and fresh salads
in addition to about 15 upscale sandwiches. Even better, you can pick
a bottle of wine from about 500 different selections in the store and
drink it with your meal. There is also a very good imported beer and
hard cider selection.
We ate lunch there on game day, and then rode the downtown shuttle
to the game. It was extremely pleasant, and I plan to return for a
dinner on the patio when the weather cools a bit. My only bump was
when we went to watch my daughter and the band play at Turlington
after the game (the drum line was insane and amazing), and that made
it impossible to get the shuttle back to our car. I need to work on
that issue. Perhaps there is a GRU bus I can catch at Rawlings that
goes downtown.

Top class italian is Manuel's Vintage Room, make reservations.
Amelia's is great. Francesca's Trattoria is really good, borderline
between casual fine.

Embers is the steakhouse on south 34th Street. Some of my friends
love it. I've been there twice. Once my host rented out the whole
place and had passed plates. The food was really tasty and just kept
coming. The other time was for my birthday dinner. We reserved
indicating it was a milestone birthday.. Our party was seated
immediately and ignored for 35 minutes. We even asked those waiting
nearby tables twice for water and were told that they would alert our
waiter..  It was obviously also the chef's birthday.  Our steaks
were flavorless and we left without dessert.

Civilization serves fine food in a casual atmosphere. They can only
seat about 59 people, so waiting is sometimes required.

RE: [gatortalk] I thought Kevin Taylor would get some touches.

2013-09-29 Thread Darlene Goodfellow
Not picking on you Jerry, but I don't get this - Kelvin is going to be
great, but he's a true freshman and he won't get any touches until he learns
to pick up the blitz. Matt Jones, a sophomore, had 176 yards rushing and
Mack Brown had a good game on more limited touches. Hopefully we get Valdez
back soon and they all appear more than capable. That's not enough? Why not
redshirt Taylor at this point? And I'm not worried about him becoming
disillusioned, he is at his dad's alma mater and I'm pretty sure he knows
his time will come. From what I've seen on twitter, Dad is telling him all
the right things, including enjoy college son!

Re: [gatortalk] I thought Kevin Taylor would get some touches.

2013-09-29 Thread Jerry D. Belloit
My concern is that the coach said he wanted to give him more playing time and
didn't. It has nothing to do with how well the other backs ran. My
disappointment was that KT was not rewarded for his improvement. Young kids
are touchy and I would not like him to give up and want to transfer.

That was the reason for my post.

RE: [gatortalk] I thought Kevin Taylor would get some touches.

2013-09-29 Thread Darlene Goodfellow
OK, I'm just not sure why he should be treated differently than any other
true freshman with players ahead of him. Will may have intended to get him
in there but Jones finally looked back to 100% and decided not to mess with
what was working. I just don't understand the micro-management off every
little thing the coaches are doing, especially when, IMO, the offense looked
the best of any Gator O since Tim graduated.

My concern is that the coach said he wanted to give him more playing time
and didn't. It has nothing to do with how well the other backs ran. My
disappointment was that KT was not rewarded for his improvement. Young kids
are touchy and I would not like him to give up and want to transfer.

That was the reason for my post.

Will has also said that he will ride the RB that is hot - Matt came out and
had some nice early runs and appears to be back in pre-illness form, so I
think it has more to do with that than anything Kelvin is doing wrong. I
hope Kelvin is making progress but I don't think he is there yet and at this
point in the season I don't see any point in burning his redshirt. Kelvin
played at a small HS where he was the star and didn't have to learn how to
block until he got to UF. Matt Jones came out of a HS used to winning
championships and so he was a lot further along in picking up his blocking
assignments and I think that is why he has Will's confidence and they are
going to ride him this year as much as possible. It's all pretty good right
now, IMO, so I am confused why Gator fans never seem to be content with what
is working.

Part of what concerns me is that Coach Mush last week said he was going to
play him some and that he had made great progress picking up his blocking
assignments. Kevin said earlier that he was having some frustration about
not playing.

I know that he is a legacy and that his dad supports us. However, I think
if I was in his position and the coach had said what he did, I would want to
know what I had done to deserve to stay on the bench.

I was disappointed that Kevin Taylor did not get any touches (that I
noticed) in Saturday's game. I hope that he does not get disillusioned by
not playing.
