[gentoo-dev] seeking maintainer(s) for dev-util/eclipse-sdk

2007-08-01 Thread Joshua Nichols
Hey folks,

Eclipse 3.3 has been out for a bit now, and 3.2.2 even longer, and I
haven't had the time to sit down to get either fully packaged. So, I'm
looking for someone to step up and maintain it.

So here are some details about the package:

 * It is in dual-herd: dev-tools and java
 * We work with other downstream packagers as part of the Eclipse Linux
Distrubtions project. Mostly, we share patches that make things a bit
saner in a Linux environment.
* The ebuild is pretty long, at 403 or so lines
* There's a lot of patching/tweaking going on. There's some 26 patches,
10 or so seds, and some miscellaneous changes that occur.

In addition to eclipse-sdk itself, there are a number of Eclipse plugins
in the tree. At this point, they've started to get a bit crufty. We've
generally been encouraging people to use the update manager for now.
Fortunately, some of the other downstream peeps have come up with a sane
method for maintaining plugin packages. But, we'd need to get 3.2.2 or
3.3 package before we can pursue it.

I did write up some notes awhile back on the Java wiki:

https://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/java/wiki/Eclipse_Maintenance
https://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/java/wiki/Eclipse_Plugin_Maintenance

I'm sure people are frothing at the mouth to maintain Eclipse at this
point. So, please drop an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and we can work out
how to hand things over.

Let me know if anything comes of it. I'm interested in helping
development again, but don't presently have enough time to do the
restructuring needed now.

Ok, thanks for pointing me at this. I've already started discussing
this with a few of the users on that list. I tried a number of years to
get this code into shape enough to get into the main kernel tree. Looks
like I'll try this again.

I'm running it on my laptop with a 9600/9700 Mobility (it has an
identity crisis I guess)... Works fine after applying the patch..

Yes

Was there a reason for this?

It no longer compiles, as the legacy way of accessing serial ports
disappeared, serial is now a platform device. I can't see an easy fix.

It may return in future, in a different form. I suggested some future
direction here:

Is speakup finally dropped from the gentoo tree in this release?

Was there a reason for this?

I am willing to help. I got a 2.6.22 kernel I want to boot to test out
the new mac80211 stuff vs the older softmac. The ati-driver issue is the
only thing holding me back. Just haven't had a chance to apply patches
per bug, and bump ebuild locally to test.

If it's in an overlay, or tree, surely happy to sync and test :)

Well seems most AMD machines are likely to ship with ATI chipsets these
days. For sure most lappies :)

Interesting side note. Beryl/Xgl works on my laptop, ATI Xpress200m. Had
it working once on my two workstations. Both with nVidia chipsets, and
nothing special, but nothing that old either. First time I have had more
problems with nVidia vs ATI.

Unmaintained and broken... sounds like a candidate for removal.

NVIDIA FTW!!!

*grin*

No, seriously. If this is holding us back, I'll do the commits provided
I can find people to help me with testing. This is for the very short
term. I don't want to maintain a driver for hardware I don't own and
never intend on purchasing.

There are no maintainers of ati-drivers. So you're not prodding anyone.

as discussed on the gentoo-council list, it'll be postponed a week due to LWE
(the last day of LWE:SF is the same day as the council meeting) ... as a
reminder, be sure to visit LWE:SF this year to hump your council members as a
number of us will be there

[gentoo-dev] Monthly Gentoo Council Reminder for August

2007-08-01 Thread Mike Frysinger
This is your monthly friendly reminder ! Same bat time (typically
the 2nd Thursday at 2000 UTC / 1600 EST), same bat channel
(#gentoo-council @ irc.freenode.net) !

If you have something you'd wish for us to chat about, maybe even
vote on, let us know ! Simply reply to this e-mail for the whole
Gentoo dev list to see.

Keep in mind that every GLEP *re*submission to the council for review
must first be sent to the gentoo-dev mailing list 7 days (minimum)
before being submitted as an agenda item which itself occurs 7 days
before the meeting. Simply put, the gentoo-dev mailing list must be
notified at least 14 days before the meeting itself.
