Why would you create another entirely useless artificial project nobody
needs?

I think a "jabber" project would be a more suitable fit for this than
"erlang".

Then perhaps there can be a subproject of "jabber" for "ejabberd".

"erlang" is probably too broad in scope.

If there was an erlang project, then it might be sensible to have
"ejabberd" be co-maintained by erlang.

An erlang project would create a wrong impression. I have currently no
interest in maintaining the larger erlang ecosystem.
If there is developer interest in a generic erlang project that would
of course be fine, but it would be a project with a different focus.
(And I don't think there would be any problem coordinating the 2
projects if they exist, but for now that's a hypothetical situation.)

Wouldn't a Erlang project be better, specially as there is the Perl and
Python projects which are there for probably the same reasons?

Also saying this from a Elixir (language which borrows a lot from Erlang,
like it's VM, librairies and fault-tolerance) developer point of view
which tried to package pleroma few months ago in my overlay, there is a
bunch of shared dependencies and I'm pretty sure there will be more
Elixir applications in the wild.
