[gentoo-user] Has xorg or something changed?
Hi all A while ago I set up a twin monitor system using two graphics cards. All worked fine until I carried out an update. During the update I noticed that a lot of X11 files were updated but thought nothing of it. When I restarted, the second monitor refused to work. Running Xorg -configure showed that both cards were detected but only the monitor connected to the AGP card was detected. I finally got it working again after changing the BIOS to treat the PCI card as the primary display instead of the AGP card. I've tried various combinations of AGP and PCI cards but always with the same result. Last week I carried out a complete reinstall ( not to solve this by the way) and it is still the same so I assume that something must have changed but I have no idea what. Anyone got any ideas on this. TIA Stewart -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
[gentoo-user] Packet writing a drive that works please
Hi all I've been trying to get packet writing to work with my old cd-rw drive. Although I can read the content of any file from a disk produced with InCd running on WinXP I can only mount the disk read only. I assume that my old cd-rw drive just isn't compatible with packet writing. I looked at a list of compatible drives , a very short list it has to be said and I can't find any of them for sale. Does anyone know of a modern dvd-rw drive that will work. TIA Stewart -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] rsync locks up and doesn't continue
Hi Don't know if this will help but I had a similar problem when I set up my archiving system. The problem was that I set it to use ssh which needs it own password and the password file was only used by rsync. the answer was to not use ssh and just use rsync client to rsync server. This was just over my lan but it solved the problem. HTH Stewart. Iain Buchanan wrote: Hi all, I have a script that downloads my distfiles from machines on our LAN before going over the internet. It uses rsync over ssh to get files locally, then defaults to wget for internet downloads. The command line is basically this: /usr/bin/rsync -avzP --password-file=filename rsync://user@host/path filename which works fine most of the time, so I know the syntax, password and permissions are correct. However, sometimes rsync dies (the download process just stops) and I get this sort of message: Password: *password sent* receiving file list ... rsync: link_stat /usr/portage/distfiles/Net-DNS-0.59.tar.gz failed: No such file or directory (2) 0 files to consider sent 8 bytes received 21 bytes 58.00 bytes/sec total size is 0 speedup is 0.00 rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(1298) [receiver=2.6.8] And the download won't continue - nor do I get the prompt back because rsync seems to lock the script up at this point by not returning. This is really annoying when it stops at 3 of 50! I don't mind killing it, but sometimes this is supposed to run unattended... Now fair enough, if the file doesn't exist, I can't rsync it, but most of the time, this makes rsync just exit, and the script continues. All I can get from google and docs is that code 23 is a general error, meaning some read / write / delete failed. I'm not out of disk space. can anyone shed light on this issue? thanks! -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] Only one sound channel with SB live value
Hi all I've just put together a system using some old kit I've got. Everything seems OK except the sound card. Before I go any further the system is also setup to boot Win98 and the sound card is fine when running Win98. With the Labtec stereo speakers plugged into the front speaker socket sound only comes from the left speaker, if I use KMix and set the balance slider fully to the right and turn the volume right up, some sound comes through the right speaker. If I plug the speakers into the rear output socket the sound comes from both speakers. I've been trying to fix this for a couple of weeks with no joy. [gentoo-user] Mouse wheel doesn't work
Hi all Just about got Gentoo up and running as I want it. Taken a while with all the tweaking and re-tweaking but I've not had as much fun with a computer for years. I've got a couple of problems which, so far, have got me pulling my hair out as nothing I try fixes them. I've got a Microsoft Intellimouse (ps2) which seems to be detected correctly but the wheel will not work under KDE. Under KDE Control center peripherals mouse I get the option to adjust the scroll rate, but this has no effect. The wheel seems to be working as a left button, if I click the wheel over an icon or file that item is selected. I've tried all the fixes I've found on the web (not many, most seem to relate to cordless mice) without success. I'll post the other problem as a separate posting. [gentoo-user] Font sizes very small in KDE
Hi All I've got a problem with the display under KDE. I've just installed Gentoo for the first time. Under KDE the font sizes are very small compared with what they should be. Compared with the same hardware under Suse 8.0 all text displays a little over half the size. this affects KDE apps and non KDE apps the same. Firefox text on menus and the like is so small that it is unusable. On one of my own programs the 14 point text displays as if it were 8-9 point. I have a Matrox Millennium G400 graphics card. I've tried all the settings i can find and have tried different kernel modules settings without success. The info I found on the web left me confused as it seems that this card may have different names in the UK and US. I'm in the UK. TIA Stewart -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] Problems installing
Hi all I've been trying to install Gentoo. I want to see if Gentoo is for me so I've kept it simple. My first attempt I tried a stage1 install, as this failed the second time I tried a stage3 install, if it failed less time wasted. Both times I opted for a genkernel install, everything seemed OK, no error messages and all stages completed. However both times when I get to 7.d ls /boot/kernel* /boot/initrd* I get the same result both times: /boot/initrd*:no such file or directory /boot/kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.12-genkernel-r6 Taking the entry in the grub configure example as a guide I've searched for any initrd files just in case it's somewhere else the only entries are a couple of .gz files in /usr/man/man4 nothing else. I could use some help to sort this out as I have no idea what to do. TIA Stewart -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
