If one tries to modify the ebuild and test a change, the system issues a file
size error. How do you get around that?

Dale,

Thanks for following up. HOw do you start a new thread?

It is slightly annoying when you change a setting and reverts back to the
original; the whole (computer) system should be more user friendly. Either way,
it is good that there is an easy fix, which I will do.

I will have much more complex issues to discuss shortly.

Thanks.

This may not be a bug.  It depends on how you set your
clock.  You need to check the settings in
/etc/conf.d/clock and make sure you have it set up
correctly.  Also, if you are dual booting with windoze,
that makes you have to have additional settings from what I
have read in the past.  Windoze sets the BIOS clock

someone else will have to help with that.

Phylip,

First of all, I currently do have a functioning xorg server; but not sure if it
is working as well as it should, based on the reported errors. Does anyone know
what are the libXxf86dga libXxf86vm libraries as compared to the proto
variety? They seem to be the offending packages pulled in by kde-base.

The way I read the error messages, to emerge the xorg-server, the above
packages need to be gone and the proto variety packages will be than emerged.

Someone at Gentoo put in a block between the 2 package varieties, so working
around this seems to be wrong. Why aren't the xorg and kde packages
communicating?

Dale,

Your fix worked, so far so good. Previously, I tried setting the time from KDE
and using the date function and both were overridden on re-boot. One would
think that either one of these functions would override the factory presets.

I see 'date' is a binary file. Does kde also use this function to change its
time and date? Where would one find the source package for 'date'?

Re: [gentoo-user] No Mousewheel in X and ctrl-alt-backspace not working

2010-04-19 Thread dan blum
If you are still having trouble with xorg, the best source of error information
is the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log, which is created every time you run xorg.

Also, the Gento web site has several articles on xorg which can provide
additional help, although not all information is in one place.

There I found that you can add the alt_control_backspace control into the conf
file under Options:
Option: XkbdOptions terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp. I have never dried this
myself. Good luck.

[gentoo-user] Cups printing

2010-06-15 Thread dan blum
I just loaded a kde 4.3.5 system onto my computer. I printed a kword file to a
pdf file. When I now print to the cups printer I get an error: application/pdf
in the error log. I tried to change the destination (type), without success.
Printing from other applications, like Firefox works ok.

Am I doing anything wrong or is this a bug.

Dan

[gentoo-user] Xorg 1.65

2010-08-12 Thread dan blum
I am currently running xorg 1.7, which crashes very frequently. When I used to
run xorg 1.65 everything was running fine. Can anyone clue me in on how to
emerge an older version of the program.

Thanks.

Re: [gentoo-user] Xorg 1.65

2010-08-17 Thread dan blum
Bill,

The xorg version is 1.7.6 (no r# to the best of my knowledge). When I do emerge
it will re-emerge the 1.7.6 version and not the newer 1.8.2 version. The video
card is VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE
Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01).

I have not tried the mask suggested by other responders yet, but will soon.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Dan

Maybe you should have a look at the portage
 documentation carefully
and understand it well before you dive into gentoo,
 it's really
  important:

  http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2chap=1

  Good luck

and consider going the other way - I am using 1.8.2
 (xorg-server) which
is more stable for me than the 1.7 series.

However, some idea on what your system is may help -
 certain
combinations (xorg-server-1.7.x, inetl driver and tuxonice
 hibernate are
problematic, others are fine with certain workarounds.

Can you provide more info such as video card and what the
 crash is?  The
actual xorg version should be something like 7.4-r1 so I
 presume you
 quoted xorg-server?

[gentoo-user] xorg 1.9

2011-01-18 Thread dan blum
I upgraded my xorg from 1.76 to 1.9 yesterday, including downloading the most
recent drivers. When the new system did not work, I checked the xorg log
(attached) and I thought that the problem was the mode setting. So in the
kernel, I enabled the modesetting by default and now the card does not send
any signals to the screen at all.

I can go back to the old kernel settings. But does anyone know what was the
initial problem, and what needs to be done to correct this.

Thanks for any advice.

Nikos,

Thanks for the help. My system is looking for the i915 module. Would you know
where the module needs to be?

Thanks.

Dan

You seem to be using kernel 2.6.32.  That *might* be the problem. Try 2.6.36.

Other than that, the usual stuff applies: Delete your xorg.conf (so that X.Org
can automatically configure everything) and make sure you don't have VESAFB
enabled in the kernel.
