t-term and long-term restoration of this
metabolism. It seems necessary to start with both: short- and
long-terme restoration measures. There are some tools as short term
measures in the engineers toolbox which might find use in said
restoration work. Some others of the advertised solutions might worsen
the problem.

But to do the necessary research, lab and field-testing needs money.
Governments, politicans and even the Green have ignored the problem.
Since more than 20 years we developed models and measures for this
purpose but got only little help by private sponsors not any help from
government or parties. To my opinion the politicans will ask and pay
for solutions not before the water level will have risen enough until
the streets of coastal towns become flooded.

As you see, education and information of the broad level of the
population, journalists, politicans and even of the scientific
community is an necessity. Any sticking of yourself and your friends
on the streets will not solve the problem

Re: [geo] SATAN

2023-03-05 Thread Dr. Maiken Winter
I think it would be extremely important that we do not repeat that bad
press of people who do not understand the urgency or do not want to
understand the urgency.  People have different approaches to try to safe
humanity. Some speak and write a lot, some demonstrate, some glue
themselves. We need all of them. And we all need to stand up together
and defend our backs against the majority of stupidity.

I think it is awful, not timely and not understandable when climate
scientists repeat the bad press against the last generation. I though
you understood the urgency, no?

Actually, here in Germany the press is becoming more and more positive.
People don´t like it, but they start to understand.

They don´t need to be liked. They need to be understood. And they need
the focus on the urgency. If people like you just repeat the bad press,
then of course things look quite dire for their movement. Do you want that?

I think it’s pretty undeniable that people gluing themselves to

It sounds like you already agreed with the cause so you can’t use
yourself as a person who was converted to the cause by others gluing
themselves to paintings. I think there are basically zero such people.

Dear Maiken,

I can’t but give you my personal opinion: the people who wrote in the
blog have constantly demanded that governments and public research
institutions not fund research into geoengineering at all.
That’s the whole goal of the website on which the article is hosted
(they also demand that the IPCC should self-censor itself on the
topic, and that researchers should lose their job over their research.
It’s in the letter hosted on the website and you can look it up). With
that in mind, the authors move to accuse researchers of shady goals
not because that’s what they say or state publicly or privately, but
because they take funding for their research from sources the two
authors see as having those goals in mind. You can see the trap for
yourself.
If you want to hear directly from the researchers, you can find a
couple of opinion pieces I have been involved in (many more can be
found around from different sets of researchers).

Re: [geo] Climate Expert: Stop Talking About "Geoengineering"

2021-11-21 Thread Dr. Maiken Winter
able early science was positioned as a moment
for a societal decision about research in this category. The testing
they proposed wouldn't have had any environmental impact or impact on
people. So the basis for the decision was not scientific; it was
really about a small set of people's opinions about whether or not
this kind of research should go forward. While the intentions were
good, they inadvertently set up an undemocratic situation where a very
tiny group of people are deciding whether scientific information would
be available for everybody else.

We think that scientific independence and integrity is really
important, especially in this research. We need scientists doing
independent science, and when they have generated a lot of information
for people around the world to review, we then need the societal
moment where everybody can weigh in.

Re: [geo] Exploration of a novel geoengineering solution: lighting up tropical forests at night

2021-11-10 Thread Maiken Winter
Dear geoengineers,
I have been a quiet reader of this listserv for years. I am not an expert. And
I am deeply concerned about the developments going on in our climate and
natural systems.
But seriously? Are we now thinking about lightening up forests? What effects
would that have on animals in those forests? Are there studies about that?
Are we willing to do anything to save humanity - which seems just to not want
to be saved? Shouldn´t any geoengineering suggestions always be coupled with
the demand to seriously step on the brakes, stop our believe in eternal growth
and call for an immidiate moratorium in our collective overconsumption of about
everything? Instead, we are happy that transcontinental flights are finally
resuming, that new streets are being built to reduce traffic jams, that great
big representative buildings are being built ... Most people are still in a
completely wrong, self-destroying mindset. If we cannot change that, then I
doubt that geoengineering can safe us, because we will destroy other
life-supporting systems as well - such as intact ecosystems.
Thanks for your insights,
Best,
Maiken
